AGING PROCESS AND EFFECTS

PITTSBURGH SLEEP QUALITY INDEX, THE

The lack of adequate sleep can have adverse effects on an older person's health and overall sense of well-being. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is a valuable aid to investigate areas that can affect the quality and quantity of sleep. It includes a careful measurement of bedtime, time to get to sleep, wake-up time, hours of sleep, barriers to getting or staying asleep, and the use of sleep medications. The results gathered from the assessment can help care providers to start a dialogue that leads to an effective care plan with appropriate, individualized interventions. This assessment test can be self-administered or completed through an interview process.

SHAKEN: JOURNEY INTO THE MIND OF A PARKINSON'S PATIENT

Paul Schroder graduated at the top of his class in electrical engineering, and then was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. After a decade of being on medication and growing increasingly debilitated, he decides that radical brain surgery is preferable to sitting on the couch like a vegetable for the rest of his life. While Paul lies awake on the operating table, doctors implant electrodes in his brain and a neurostimulation device underneath his collarbone. The results of this electrifying surgery are mysterious, miraculous and bittersweet.

    Reviews
  • "This film is a useful teaching tool for helping undergraduates understand the impact of PD on patients and their families. Many students, especially those with a pre-health bent, will find the surgical scenes inspirational. Watching the movie in conjunction with reading a sampling of the literature can lead to a greater understanding of the brain circuits involved in PD and an appreciation of the therapeutic value of DBS. In addition, the compassion with which the material is presented can remind students of the fundamentally patient-driven nature of their future profession. " - Kristina S. Mead Biology Department, Denison University, Granville, OH, The Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience Education (JUNE), Spring 2007

  • "After suffering through a debilitating decade with Parkinson's disease, Paul Schroder -- a relatively young electrical engineer -- opted to undergo radical brain surgery in a last-ditch attempt to maintain some quality of life. Deborah Fryer's award-winning documentary tracks Schroder's progress -- if it can truly be called that -- following a grueling procedure that involves the implantation of electrodes in his brain and a neurostimulation device underneath his collarbone, detailing the challenges Schroder faces while adjusting to the technology designed to help ameliorate his condition. An eloquent and poignant profile of a man who confronts disease head on, while also learning to accept limitations on his lifestyle, Shaken is recommended. 3 Starts " - Video Librarian, July/August 2007

  • "This multi-award-winning film explores the personal journey of a Parkinson's patient. Unlike most such patients, Paul Schroder was diagnosed in his early thirties, as was actor Michael J. Fox. Recent research suggests that the disease may be triggered by exposure to environmental toxins and will become more commonplace as time goes by. Schroder's symptoms are shown being somewhat alleviated by a new procedure whereby a regulating device is implanted into his brain. Unhappily, the progression of the disease continues, and his improvement will not last. This very moving film, which was shown to members of Congress in their recent hearings on stem-cell research, will be useful to Parkinson's patients and their families and friends. Recommended." - Susan B. Hagloch, Library Journal, June 2007

It has saved up to 50 percent in costs, thousands of lives, and avoided hundreds of thousands of medical errors. Significant improvements have already begun in hospitals in several major cities.

    & THOU SHALT HONOR

& Thou Shalt Honor documents an exciting new stage in our cultural development. While the huge increase in the number of caregivers in our society can be said to be a result of the success of medical technology, it also represents a breakthrough in our growth as an extended family. During the second half of the 20th Century, advances in medical technology made it possible for individuals to survive for years with diseases and chronic conditions that would have made a rapid death just a few years before. Though laudable, this created a new population of persons in need of caregiving and, therefore, a new population of caregivers. Many, if not most, of us will be both in our lifetimes a caregiver and the cared-for. We may slip into these roles so gradually that we scarcely realize it. Or, as the social scientists say, we may not self-identify. & Thou Shalt Honor examines the various aspects of caregiving in a warm and caring documentary. Never has there been such a resource on caregiving. This 2-part series is filled with teachable moments that make it a MUST OWN for public libraries, corporations, universities, nursing & medical schools, aging facilities, hospitals and anyone involved with caregiving issues and concerns.

    Reviews
"This well-organized, informative production suggests ways in which society can improve the quality of life for the growing number of families responsible for the care of cherished relatives." - Nancy McCray,Booklist

"In spite of the difficulties of caregiving, 'And Thou Shalt Honor' emphasizes that not everything about the task is negative. The program highlights the work being done by such pioneers in the field as Dr. Bill Thomas, founder of the Eden Alternative, an innovative approach to nursing home care; Dr. Donna Benton of the University of California, who is part of a respite program focused on helping caregivers learn to take care of themselves; and Dr. James Pacala, director of the Aging Game at the University of Minnesota. Pacala's program is an initiative aimed at helping medical students and health-care professionals understand the daily challenges facing those who deal with aging and illness."- Korky Vann, The Hartford Courant

"Caregiving is one of the most challenging tasks a person can take on, especially if the situation lasts for more than a few months. You can't do it all yourself. You need help, and lots of it." - Gloria Cavanaugh, American Society on Aging (Prevention Magazine, October 2002)

"'And Thou shalt Honor' spares us the usual mawkish superficiality of television and provides us with the reality of how our society treats and fails the nation's caregivers and those they care for in about 23 million American households¡K.As the program notes, caregiving provokes a torrent of conflicting emotions for the caregiver and care-recipient - guilt, hopelessness, depression, the fear of dying and the fear of not dying, thoughts of suicide, anger, loniless, exhaustion and worry over financial burdens. But none had regrets." - Saul Friedman, Newsday

"& Thou Shalt Honor presents timely and essential information on the lives of millions of Americans who provide both paid and unpaid care for those who need it." - Rosalynn Carter, President, Board of Directors

"This video would be excellent for use in undergraduate and graduate classes of all kinds¡KI recommend this well-produced and moving video to anyone interested in caregiving, elders, and the support of families.

Technically, this is an excellent video, with good videography. The interviews are effective and provide a diverse view of caregivers. I was deeply moved by this video. Different ethnic and racial groups, genders, and ages are represented. The video shares lots of success stories and effective programs with the viewer." - Robert E. Yahnke, PhD, Audiovisual Editor,

    Review
"This program would be a good purchase for public libraries with a large senior population or those libraries that sponsor programs for senior citizens. It may also be of use to school libraries that serve in the training of health professionals. Because this is a magazine-style program, the three segments, although centered on the theme of aging, are capable of standing as independent units. This makes the video highly flexible since it is possible to build an independent program around each unit." - Helen McCullough, Pelletier Library, Allegheny College, MC Journal: Journal of Academic Media Librarianship

    FINAL CHAPTER

A range of cultural issues and attitudes surrounds death and dying. Certainly the age of the dying person, the extent of the illness or injury, as well as the legal and ethical ramifications, are factors that need to be considered in prolonging life and continuing medical support. In recent years, the hospice movement has provided valuable assistance for many dying persons and their families. Because the death of a loved one can have significant health consequences for family and friends, the support provided by familial and social networks plays an extremely important role in easing the pain of separation and loss.

WISDOM OF THE WILLOW, THE - CAPTURING THE SPIRIT OF THE NURSE PRACTITIONER

Nurse practitioners are registered nurses educated and prepared to deliver primary health care to individuals, families, and communities. At the turn of the 21st Century, numbers of nurse practitioners approached 100,000. Seldom, however, do today's nurse practitioners appreciate the phenomenal growth of their role, nor do they know its compelling history, which began in 1965 at the University of Colorado School of Nursing. This documentary captures the courage, determination, and perseverance of the nurse practitioner, once considered a traitor to the nursing profession. The documentary chronicles the origin and expansion of the role in the powerful and passionate words of its founders and pioneers. Featured prominently is Loretta Ford, EdD, RN, FAAN, dean and nursing professor emerita, who founded the role to provide additional skills for public health nurses seeking ways to address their under-served patients' needs. Rather than being heralded for creating an autonomous, master's prepared role for nurses, instead Ford was treated "as a pariah" and became "persona non grata" to colleagues. Hear her story, told with wisdom, wit, and wonder some 30 years later. Also bear witness to the insights of others -- among them Barbara Durand, Michael Carter, and Linda Pearson -- who expanded opportunities for nurse practitioners in other regions of the country through practice, education, and publishing. Nancy Dickenson-Hazard, CEO of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing, narrates this provocative documentary, a must-see for all nurse practitioners and those who educate them, as well as those registered nurses who aspire to the role.

    HARBOR

    by Catherine Doeren

Harbor is a personal documentary about the unique relationship between the filmmaker and her father, who suffered a major stroke several years ago. In just one moment, their traditional family was torn apart. An athletic, professional and independent father became paralyzed and unable to communicate without difficulty. A carefree, idealistic daughter was transformed into a responsible caregiver with changed priorities. Harbor shares the daughter`s perspective of her father`s stroke and subsequent disability. It explores a universal rite of passage, and gently shows how one young woman, faced with a tremendous loss, learns about the sadness, anger, and finally, the joy involved in caring for a loved one.

    Review
"It was touching and, I thought, shed a realistic light on the very difficult experience of watching a loved-one's life, (particularly that of a cherished father) and family tragically fractured by stroke. However tragic, I was left with the feeling that through caregiving, the family was carried beyond tragedy to a sense of magnanimity one often finds in safeguarding others." - Diane Driver, PhD, Academic Coordinator, University of California

DIVIDED LOYALTIES - GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN

    by Raquel Ortiz

What happens to children when their parents are drug abusers, incarcerated, neglectful, or have AIDS? In more than 3 million cases in the United States, they are raised by their grandparents. Divided Loyalties shows ways in which grandparents have helped themselves, and ways communities have supported their efforts. It profiles a woman who left a high-paying professional job to raise her three grandchildren, who were being neglected by her drug-abusing daughter. Also featured are professionals who work with grandparents, incarcerated mothers, and crack-addicted parents.
