YEARS IN THE MAKING: A JOURNEY INTO LATE LIFE CREATIVITY

Years In the Making introduces a group of 50 feisty, professional artists who live within a few miles of each other. All between the ages of 70 and 95 years old, they are still passionate about their art and their need to produce new work. They talk about the challenges they faced to become artists originally and the new challenges that come with age.

And what eventful lives they have lived. Some document how the Great Depression, World War II, the Holocaust and the Civil Rights movement impacted their lives and their art. Others tell about confronting illness and aging with creativity, finding new ways to express themselves.

Years in the Making is a joyful documentary providing insights into the creative process and the impact of art throughout various stages of life. It is a kaleidoscope of the artists, their works and their diverse personalities.

Alternately pensive and humorous, the film inspires us to seize the day and to celebrate artists who are journeying through late life creativity.

Narrated by Keir Dullea with music by composer Paul Alan Levi, this production presents a vast array of the visual arts including painters, sculptors, mixed media artists, cartoonists, illustrators, graphic designers and photographers who have spent decades nurturing their talents and creating works that have gained national and international recognition.

LOOK US IN THE EYE: THE OLD WOMEN'S PROJECT

    By Jennifer Abod

In "Look Us in the Eye," Cynthia Rich, Mannie Garza and Janice Keaffaber take the stereotypes of an ageist culture and turn them on their heads. Wearing brilliant t-shirts that declare "Old Women are Your Future" and carrying their giant multi-ethnic old woman puppet, POWER (Pissed Old Woman Engaged in Revolution), The Old Women's Project refuses invisibility and proclaims that old women are part of every social justice issue. Look Us in the Eye is intended for highschool girls, women of all ages, and the boys and men who care about us.

    Reviews
  • "Look Us in the Eye: The Old Women's Project opened my eyes to a rarely discussed form of discrimination--ageism. But, instead of dwelling on ageism as a cultural disease and making suggestions for reform, it profiles the activism of an organization that leads by example. It helped me to recognize the power of old women and the desperate need for true intergenerational activism." - Tony Lo Presti, Policy Advocate, Environmental Health Coalition, San Diego, CA

  • "Abod has done it again!! Extraordinary!! Moving, passionate and courageous, Look us in the Eye, will challenge your ageism and point the path toward a liberatory politics of solidarity with old women." - M. Jacqui Alexander, Professor, Women and Gender Studies, University of Toronto

  • "Incredibly powerful film! It encourages us to examine our stereotypes and prejudices. It uses humor and powerful images to convey the strength and brilliance of old women. Girls and women everywhere must see this film." - Lourdes Torres, Associate Professor, De Paul University

  • "Every girl, every young woman, every woman should see this film and they should bring along the boys and men they know too!" - Krista Lyons-Gould, Publisher , Seal Press

SUCCESSFUL AGING: PALLIATIVE CARE - CARE FOR TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS

America is a death denying society that often does not formally prepare individuals to deal with death and dying on personal and emotional levels. Palliative care is a philosophy of care for terminally ill patients, which assures the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual comfort of the dying patient and their family.

    Review
  • "This video discusses the very basic nature of palliative care - terminal care provided to improve the quality of life when a cure is not possible. Discussion focuses around the issue of improving the quality of life that remains and not necessarily the length of the life. The video is simple and straight forward, providing an overview of the topic and sufficient information for viewers to pursue the myriad of issues addressed in greater detail." - Warren Hawkes, New York State Nurses Association, Educational Media Reviews Online
