SEXUAL HARASSMENT: A COMMONSENSE APPROACH - CALIFORNIA MANAGER'S VERSION

This California sexual harassment training program for managers helps you meet the requirements of AB 1825.

Used as one component of a two-hour program led by your own qualified in-house trainer, this California sexual harassment training program helps you meet the standards of California AB 1825, which requires ongoing sexual harassment training for all managers and supervisors in organizations with 50 or more employees.

This dramatic training program is designed to help you and your managers understand both the gray areas and the obvious. You'll see realistic scenes that are clearly sexual harassment, and others that are probably just a lapse in good judgment.

You'll learn proven techniques that help you respond appropriately and in compliance with the national and California sexual harassment laws; tips to keep all employees informed about your company's sexual harassment policy; and answers to questions about which behaviors are appropriate in the workplace.

  • Is it ever OK to hug someone at work?
  • Are compliments ever appropriate?
  • How much joking around is acceptable?
  • Is it illegal for employees to date?

This California sexual harassment training program looks at both forms of sexual harassment that have been defined by the courts: hostile work environment and quid pro quo. Hostile work environment harassment is ongoing behavior that interferes with a person's ability to do their job, while quid pro quo (Latin for "this for that") harassment is when a superior uses his or her power to gain sexual favors.

Experts in the field, trainer Linda Garrett and attorney Brandon Blevans, add their insights to help you distinguish what is-and what is not-sexual harassment, in various settings, including manufacturing, office, healthcare and academic environments.

Specific California sexual harassment training requirements as set forth by AB 1825 are addressed in the California Manager version of this popular program.

Speaking directly to supervisors and managers, this sexual harassment training DVD offers clear guidance on how to recognize and prevent sexual harassment in the workplace, and explains their responsibilities to respond promptly and appropriately.

Quid pro quo (Latin for "this for that") harassment occurs when a superior uses his or her power to gain sexual favors.

Commonly-asked questions about workplace behavior answered by this training include:
  • Is it ever OK to hug someone at work?

    SEXUAL HARASSMENT: SERIOUS BUSINESS

Four office scenarios and one plant scenario show how to stop sexual harassment in the workplace.

This sexual harassment training program explains the definition of unwelcome sexual conduct and shows the consequences of inappropriate workplace behavior.

Tina likes to talk, and the department is getting tired of overhearing her graphic phone calls as she brags about her active social life. Meanwhile, Jason is using the fax machine to send explicit cartoons. And Linda's flirtation with Stan is creating a situation that disrupts the rest of their team.

Worse yet, Ed makes it clear that Janice's job depends on "getting to know him better" (an example of quid pro quo harassment), while Saundra makes a false claim of harassment to get even with her boss for not receiving a promotion.

    Teach employees:
  • Why preventing sexual harassment helps everyone.
  • How to confront harassers and tell them to stop unwelcome behavior.
  • How to respond to quid pro quo harassment.
  • The negative impacts of workplace flirtations.
  • Proper procedures for reporting and investigating complaints.
  • The consequences of false accusations.

Sexual harassment can have a serious effect on the workplace, increasing stress levels, lowering morale and productivity, and creating a hostile environment.

And false allegations can be especially damaging, with reputations ruined and jobs lost. That's why accusations of sexual harassment should never be taken lightly. It's not just a matter of violating company policy; it's also against the law.

BULLYING: A CASE TO ANSWER? A DRAMATISED CASE STUDY

Bullying at work is a major personnel issue - but it's hard to prove. This dramatised case study focuses on a thorny problem. Simon's job is to change the way his department operates. To most he seems friendly but he comes into conflict with conscientious admin worker Viv.

Problems start when Simon has Viv's desk moved without consulting her. Simon apologises, but Viv isn't happy. Other incidents follow - apparently small things, but Viv sees a pattern. Eventually Viv accuses Simon of undermining her. Simon says he's just doing his job and if Viv doesn't like it, she should consider her position. Viv complains to the company and its grievance procedures begin. Now it's Simon's turn to complain. He claims he's been unfairly accused. Why is he on trial on Viv's say-so?

Viv approaches her union, but discovers that pursuing her complaint will not be easy. Ultimately she may have to resign and sue for constructive dismissal - but is she prepared to go this far?

BULLIED, BATTERED & BRUISED + UPDATE

This powerful documentary looks at the significant psychological and physical implications of bullying, and profiles the way two schools are dealing with this difficult and pervasive problem. First, several students, parents and community members in a Manitoba town who, despite the threat of a community backlash, publicly voice their concerns about the bullying in their schools, and participate in candid and emotional discussions about the problem and its effects. In interviews with school administration, the reluctance to acknowledge and address the issue is evident. Next, we visit an elementary school in B.C. that has successfully implemented a zero tolerance policy toward bullying; how the principal and teachers deal with the behaviour is presented. Following the documentary, experts discuss bullying in interview segments interspersed with personal testimonies from bullies and victims of bullying. A sixmonth update on the Manitoba community concludes the documentary revealing some dramatic changes for both the victims and the community. Length:

HARASSMENT & DIVERSITY: RESPECTING DIFFERENCES - EMPLOYEE VERSION

This harassment training program explains that every employee has the responsibility to maintain a harassment-free workplace!

Harassment is not just about sex and gender. It can also involve various cultural differences, race, religion, age, disabilities and other protected characteristics. Harassment can occur in any workforce, in any job situation, and any form of employee discrimination that falls within these categories is illegal.

The Employee Version of this popular workplace diversity training program focuses on employee sensitivity and awareness. It teaches why a harassment policy that emphasizes a respect for coworker differences is not only required by the law, but is also the right thing to do.

Both the manager and employee harassment training programs revolve around a dramatic story showing an all-too-common situation, where diverse cultural backgrounds test employees' interpersonal skills, and friction grows from "just kidding around" into illegal harassment. Our narrators, Littler Mendelson employment law attorneys Bruce Sarchet and Kevin O'Neill, provide their expertise and legal perspective.

    Employees will learn:
  • Appropriate behaviors that will help maintain a harassment-free workplace.
  • When "joking around" crosses the line and becomes workplace harassment.
  • It's not the intent that matters, but how the behavior is perceived by the recipient that counts.
  • Why the employer's harassment prevention policy must be taken seriously.
  • What to do when someon is the target of harassment.

HARASSMENT & DIVERSITY: RESPECTING DIFFERENCES - MANAGER VERSION

Managing in a diverse workplace can be a challenge, but every manager has the responsibility to maintain a harassment-free workplace!

While sexual harassment gets the bulk of the attention, there are other forms of workplace harassment that can be just as detrimental. Diversity in business should be celebrated, but unfortunately our differences carry the potential for harassment. Cultural backgrounds, age, religious beliefs, nationalities, and physical abilities are all targets for workplace discrimination, but they are also categories that are protected under law.

Harassment can occur in any workplace where the diversity of employees might cause tension and difficult interactions. This dramatic story shows an all-too-common situation, where friction between employees grows from "just kidding around" into illegal harassment. It explains that your company should have a zero tolerance harassment policy that protects every employee, all the time.

All employees have the right to work in an environment free of hostility, where courtesy and mutual respect are the dominant attitudes. Our narrator, Bruce Sarchet, an employment law attorney with Littler Mendelson PC, the National Employment and Labor Law FirmR, details the steps necessary to resolve harassment problems and protect both the company and the employees.

    Managers will learn:
  • An appreciation for diversity in the workplace.
  • Awareness of conditions that may lead to harassment, and what to keep an eye out for.
  • Policies and practices that help keep the workplace harassment-free.
  • How to respond to a claim of harassment.
  • Harassment investigation procedures and proper discipline.
  • Why harassment must be taken seriously.

All managers and supervisors need to understand their roles in preventing harassment in today's diverse workplaces. They must know the definition of illegal harassment, and why it cannot be tolerated. Use this comprehensive program to clarify how to recognize and prevent harassment, and what to do if harassment occurs.

HARASSMENT: SEX, RELIGION, AND BEYOND - EMPLOYEE VERSION

In a series of compelling stories, this broadcast-quality film explains the law. But it also captures the imagination and personalizes the value of inclusiveness by showing the potential harm that can be caused by unwelcome conduct. The Employee Version focuses on their responsibility to take action if employees experience or witness inappropriate behavior-either asking for help or speaking to the harasser directly if they feel comfortable doing so.

    Examples of bad behavior:

  • Social media allows an embarrassing photo to make the rounds in a hospital.
  • Two guys on a city crew mistreat a "less macho" coworker.
  • Friction in a restaurant kitchen leads to insults for a busser from another country.
  • A religious coworker is excluded on a construction site.
  • A client puts pressure on a company rep for a "quid pro quo" exchange.
  • Two colleagues are offended by the inappropriate dress and flirtatious behavior of their coworkers.
  • Retaliation takes a subtle form but is no less against company policy-and against the law.

    MEDIA LITERACY: UNDERSTANDING MEDIA LITERACY

TV and radio commercials, Web sites and banner ads, magazine ads, pop songs, photos, and even news articles and textbooks: all of them are sending messages to influence the reader/viewer/listener. How do they grab the attention? What are they selling - a product or service? a lifestyle? an ideology? - and why? Would a different media consumer interpret the message differently? This program raises more questions than it answers, which is the whole point: to prompt students to question, question, question the messages they are bombarded with daily. Savvy media consumers aren't born; they're made, and this program is an excellent tool for shaping the classroom dialogue.

    TEENS AT RISK: TEENAGE DEPRESSION

he statistics on teen depression are sobering. Studies indicate that one in five children have some sort of mental, behavioral, or emotional problem and that one in ten of these problems are serious. Among adolescents, one in eight may suffer from depression. Of all these children and teens, a mere 30% receive any sort of intervention or treatment. The other 70% simply struggle through the pain of mental illness or emotional turmoil, doing their best to make it to adulthood. The consequences of untreated depression can range from increased incidence of depression in adulthood, involvement in the criminal justice system, or in some cases, suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 24. Even more shocking, it is the sixth leading cause of death among children ages 5 - 14. The most troubling fact is that these struggling teens often receive no counseling, therapy or medical intervention, even though the National Institute of Mental Health reports that studies show treatments of depression in children and adolescents can be effective.
