BIOGRAPHY, THE: 50 CENT - RISE ABOVE

"Rise Above" An unauthorized story on 50 Cent' 50 Cent has had a tough life. At twelve, he was dealing cocaine. The same year his mother was murdered. Training as an amateur boxer; he conditioned himself to become a champion, which is exactly what he did when he turned to his passion: hip-hop. He has released two number one albums, three movies, two video games and even a clothing line. Yes, the man who made bullet proof vests cool may be very busy, but these days he's more concerned with designer fashion than struggling to stay alive on the streets. His catchy hooks, rhymes about guns and girls, and laid back delivery have made him a hip-hop icon. For 50 Cent, determination and ambition were two traits that helped him rise above the kind of street violence that prematurely ends lives, and took him to the top of the music charts, proving that it doesn't matter where you come from, if you've got the will to succeed, it can take you wherever you want to go. His journey is an inspiration. In just a matter of years he went from drugs, crime and jail time to becoming one of the biggest artists on the planet. Born Curtis Jackson in Queens, he grew up with his teenaged mother until her murder, when he was still a child. Moving in with his grandparents, he started selling cocaine on the streets, making up to 5,000 dollars a day. His life of crime led him to a six month stint in a boot camp for juvenile delinquents. Things appeared to take a positive turn when Run DMC took him under their wing, and he set to work on his own album before his luck seemingly ran out. He was shot nine times in front of his grandparents' house. After that, hard work at building contacts in the music industry led to collaboration with Eminem, and since then he has never looked back.

BIOGRAPHY, THE: ANZAC'S - IN THE FACE OF WAR

"ANZACS In the Face of War" presents an historical profile of Australia and New Zealand at the outbreak of war. The legacy of WWI, the shared experiences, and expectations of WWII. In the years leading up to World War 1, Australia and New Zealand were still finding their identity as nations, and still looked to the mother country - Britain - for political guidance. When Britain went to war in 1914 in the Middle East, Australia sent troops to Egypt. On April 25th, 1915, ANZAC troops were ordered to land along the Gallipoli coastline, which was later named ANZAC Cove. A navigational error meant that the Turks had the advantage, and tragically the campaign was an unmitigated disaster. Over three years, Australia lost almost 9000 men, New Zealand twice as many. The heroism of the ANZAC's is celebrated every year on the 25th of April, in a day that was named in their honour. It seems hard to imagine what those soldiers went through, but listen to their stories, which have been immortalized in print as well as voice recordings, and you can't help but notice the constant threads of mateship, bravery, sacrifice and of course, fear. It is in listening, or reading these stories that we are reminded of just how much the ANZACS suffered, and sacrificed, to ensure the safety of Australia and New Zealand from invasion and attack from our enemies. Knowing what we now know of the horrors of war, it is hard to believe that the leaders of our country at the time sought to glamorise it with propaganda, in order to encourage still more young men to enlist, to fight for their country. Many other battles have followed that fateful day in Gallipoli, and many thousands of ANZACS have given their lives on foreign soil since. But WWI sets itself apart in that barely a family was touched, in some way, by the deployment of hundreds of thousands of troops. Conscription would again raise its ugly head during the Vietnam War, igniting mass protests over Australia, America and Britain, calling for it to be scrapped, and our soldiers - who often were eighteen year old boys barely trained to load a gun, brought home. Perhaps what's most important in the lessons of the past is that we learn from them, in order not to repeat them in the future.

BIOGRAPHY, THE: AYRTON SENNA - THE FORMULA ONE LEGACY

The Aryton Senna Story - He was born into a wealthy Brazilian family. He competed in 161 Grand Prix over ten years. And he took 64 Pole Positions, winning a massive 41 of them. He has been described as being charismatic, single-minded, and totally focused, as well as lauded by his peers as "an extraordinary driver, and an extraordinary person". Aryton Senna was the idol for millions of Formula One fans, one of them being current champion Lewis Hamilton, who lists Senna alongside Alain Prost as his heroes. To so many of his fans and colleagues, he is remembered as one of the greatest Formula One champions of all time. Senna grew up in San Paolo, Brazil, the son of a wealthy landowner, and became interested in racing car driving at an early age. So much so that he entered a Brazilian Cart competition at the age of thirteen. By 1977 he had won the South American Cart Championship, and contested the World Carting Championship on several occasions, finishing second in 1979 and 1980. In 1981 he moved to England with his wife Lilly-Ann, and began racing single-seaters in Europe, winning the British Formula Four 1600 Championship. He followed that up with wins in the British and European F4 2000 Championships in 1982. He moved onto F1 racing in 1984, meeting future rival, talented French driver Alain Prost for the first time. With an impressive winning history under his belt, Senna had attracted the attention of F1 racing teams such as Williams, McLaren, Brabham, and Tollman, all of which he had tested for. In the end he was taken by Tollman, and with Senna on board the Tollman result sheet was to record their best achievements ever. His performance in the 1984 Monaco GP brought him further attention. From 13th on the grid, he worked his way to second place behind Prost, but to the disappointment of fans the race was stopped for safety reasons. Senna went on to take two more podiums that year, third at the British and Portuguese GP. By the time the Italian GP had come around Senna had signed with Lotus, whom he felt were a more competitive team and would take him further in his career. In 1988, after four years with Lotus, Senna moved onto his third racing team, McLaren, where the stage was set for the rivalry between Senna and Prost to continue and intensify. Knowing that the 1991 season was going to be the most testing of his career due to the rapid advancements made by other racing teams and a new scoring system in the championships, Senna was tense, and quick to criticize McLaren's failure to keep up with technology, at least to his standards. Rumours abounded that Senna was going to leave McLaren by the end of 1992, but he stayed with the team until October of 1993, when he was confirmed as the new driver at Williams Renault. The San Marino Grand Prix was, according to Senna, where his 1994 season would start, with 14 races, as opposed to 16, in which to win the title. Despite this, the GP got off to a bad start, with Senna's protege, Rubens Varicello, involved in a serious accident and unable to continue to race. The next day the Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger was killed in a accident during practice. As a result of this, Senna founded the Grand Prix Driver's Association, aimed at making driving conditions safer at the Formula One level. A day after Ratzenberger's death, Senna was leading a race around the treacherous Tamburello curve when his car left the track and hit a cement retaining wall at 135 miles an hour. Senna was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries, and was given a state funeral attended by his peers, and most notably, his most fierce rival, Alain Prost.

BIOGRAPHY, THE: BRITNEY SPEARS - INSIDE HER WORLD

"Inside Her World" An unauthorized story on Britney Spears is a sympathetic half-hour look at one of pop's most troubled stars: Britney Spears. From the age of 12 when she burst onto the scene in Disney's Mickey Mouse Club, Britney Spears has never been far from the spotlight. The "sweet as apple pie, American girl next door" had her first big hit with "Baby, One More Time", the video to which had her dancing in a school uniform, at the age of 17. Following up the success of her first album with another number one album - "Oops I Did It Again" in 2001 - it seemed that everything she touched turned to gold, and she could do no wrong. But her dream run was destined to end at some point, and when she and boyfriend Justin Timberlake split up after a four year relationship, she responded with a drug and alcohol fuelled bender in Las Vegas, marrying childhood friend Jason Alexander at the Little Chapel of Love. The marriage lasted 55 hours before being annulled. But it wasn't long before Brit found love again - real love this time, or so it seemed. The union with back-up dancer Kevin Federline may have produced sons Sean Preston and Jayden James, but from all reports it was flawed from the beginning. As a sign of the times, Spears informed him of her wish for a divorce in a text message! No doubt being hounded by the media, as well as having to deal with a broken heart and look after two young children contributed to Britney spiralling out of control. A custody battle ensued, and Britney's behaviour during this time became increasingly erratic. From partying all night, suspected alcohol and drug abuse and altercations with photographers, to mood swings and doubts about her ability to parent, Spears was a walking headline, but her antics led to her losing custody of her children. And the fallout of that was more dramatic than anything the tabloid writers could come up with! So it is a tribute to Britney Spears, former child star and pop icon, that she could rise from the ashes of her ruined marriage and bizarre behaviour circa 2007 and release her next studio album Blackout, which received rave reviews and revived her ailing career. Part of the credit for her transformation has to be the influence of her father, James, who has taken his daughter under his wing, personally as well as financially. With new album Circus doing well on the charts, her family, friends and fans all hope that Britney can continue to recover from addiction and keep pushing boundaries in her music career, instead of in her personal life!

BIOGRAPHY, THE: HOT RODS & MEAN MACHINES

From the 1930's, lovers of speed and style have been putting their own stamp on the automotive world, turning wrecks into racers, cars into custom creations, and taking the humble motor vehicle to the pinnacle of performance. Hot Rods and Mean Machines take a look at this alternative world of rolling wonder. A world where passion precedes cost, finish favors finance and performance is worth the price. Ever since the wheel was invented, human beings have been fascinated with modes of transport. Cars in particular, because of the range of design, color and engines that can be used to "soup up" the vehicle to its owner's taste. The internal combustion engine, invented in Germany in the late 1800's, heralded a new phase in automotive history and made the way for the first automotive manufacturing plant to open in 1904, in the United States, utilizing a version of the modern production line still in use today. The trouble was, the earliest cars rolled out of the factory looking exactly the same. And that's when customizing was born. When people think of custom cars, they tend to think of the modified Model T Fords, and for good reason. The Model T was the biggest selling car in the early 1900's. Around the same time, car enthusiasts made Hot Rod magazine popular, and were competing in both legal and illegal car racing in order to show off the power and style of their creations. Custom Cars were not only a proud subculture, but an art form which gained popularity in the 70's. Nowadays, car fanatics can attend special motor shows to check out motorcars from every decade in history, as opposed to manufacturer's motor shows, which display the cars of the future!

BIOGRAPHY, THE: NICOLE KIDMAN - THE GIRL FROM OZ

The Girl From Oz - An unauthorized story on Nicole Kidman While Australia may be a very long way from Hollywood, it has produced its own fair share of movie icons. And with the country itself taking centre stage in Baz Luhrman's epic, Australia looks set to become just as big in Tinseltown as it's elegant, Oscar winning, homegrown star, Nicole Kidman. The actress has had ties to the USA longer than most Australian actors however, even before she met and married Tom Cruise. She was born in Hawaii to Australian parents in 1967, but later moved to Australia with her parents and spent most of her childhood and teenage years in Sydney. Her incredible focus and drive to become an actress - and a good one - led her to roles in BMX Bandits and Bush Christmas. Then at the age of 22 she starred with Sam Neill in Dead Calm - a role that would capture the attention of both Hollywood and her future husband, with whom she would make the movie Days of Thunder. The couple were married on Christmas Eve, 1990, and made their first movie together as a married couple - Ron Howard's Far and Away - before calling it quits almost ten years later. During that time she'd become a mother to adopted children Connor and Isabella, and also strived to ensure that she wasn't just known in Hollywood as Mrs. Tom Cruise; starring in To Die For with Matt Dillon. She played a woman who wanted to be a newscaster and would do literally anything for her career - even killing her husband! The role saw her win a Golden Globe award for Best Actress in 1996. Sometimes the public's perception of Nicole Kidman has seemed to shift over the years, from being the public's darling, as she was after the split with Tom Cruise, to being thought as cool and aloof; a bit of an ice princess. Her choice of roles certainly hasn't done much to quell the ice princess tag, either. In Malice she played a manipulative vixen whom seemed to care about nothing but money; opposite Billy Baldwin. She followed it up with roles in Practical Magic, Portrait of a Lady and then starred alongside her husband for the final time in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut. But despite the hype, the film was panned by critics who called it cold, and slow. It's a film about cracks in a marriage and how they show themselves - but who would have predicted that not long after, the Cruise marriage itself would be over? Despite a divorce that was anything but private, Nicole just kept on keeping on. She showed the world she could sing and dance, in Moulin Rouge alongside Ewan McGregor, then recorded the single "Something Stupid" with Robbie Williams in Christmas of 2001. Moulin Rouge won her a Golden Globe in 2002, causing a resurgence of musicals to be made in Hollywood, like Chicago and Rent. Nicole's next role would be in The Others, a terrifying tale of a mother living with her children in a haunted mansion. She followed it up with Birthday Girl about a Russian mail order bride. If transformations were becoming her forte, Nicole then upped the ante with an Oscar-winning performance as Virginia Wolf in The Hours, alongside Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore. This time, it was her appearance that was changed, so much so that she was almost unrecognizable. In recent years Nicole Kidman's private life has taken center stage, with a much publicized romance with country singer Keith Urban which resulted in marriage, and even more recently, the birth of her first natural child - a daughter, Sunday Rose. As the film Australia premiered in November of 2008 she announced that it may be her last film, as her role as a mother was her top priority. But even if it does turn out to be the last time we see the gorgeous, elegant actress on film, we have an extensive catalogue of movies to remind us of the talent Australia - the country, not the movie - can produce!

BIOGRAPHY, THE: PRINCE WILLIAM - DESTINY

'Destiny' An unauthorized story on Prince William Dashing good looks and irresistible charm, Prince William has emerged as the British Royal Family's golden boy. Prince William is a young man who is well mannered, responsible and mature for his years. He shows a strong sense of duty and loyalty to his family, whilst remaining fully aware of the role that he will play as the future British King. His upbringing has been carefully managed and his destiny thoughtfully mapped out by the Monarchy. Since birth, William's personal life has been the subject of great media attention. As a result, the Prince has developed a great distain for the paparazzi, and believes they contributed to his mother's death. He is also a very protective and loving big brother to Prince Harry. It was whilst attending St Andrews University that his much-publicized romance with Kate Middleton began. Media attention became so intense that William made a specific request to the press to keep their distance from Kate. It was an all too familiar sight for the Monarchy, as in the lead up to Diana's engagement she too was besieged by the media. William graduated with upper second-class honors, the highest honors awarded to any heir of the British throne. By April 2007, the tabloids harassment had became too much for Kate. The Sun newspaper reported that the couple had split during a holiday. There was speculation that the pressure had been too much. Fortunately, several months later, the couple resumed their relationship. It was said that the Queen expressed a private desire that the couple should date for at least five years, and that Middleton should first secure a "proper full-time job". Finally after eight years of courting, it was announced that Prince William and Kate Middleton were engaged. The Prince popped the question during a holiday in Kenya, with William presenting Kate with his mother's famous diamond and sapphire engagement ring. Royalists believe it will be the wedding of their generation, with many hoping that their marriage will pass the test time of time, unlike those that have gone before them. Above all, Prince William and Harry's greatest influence was Diana, the Princess of Wales, who gave them a truly unique and loving childhood. Her legacy lives on in the young prince, who is dedicated to many charitable causes. William uses his profile and status for the greater good, and is a tireless campaigner for the environment and humanitarian causes. Both he and Harry have kept their mother's memory alive with fundraising events such as The Concert For Diana. The event was staged to celebrate their mother's life on the tenth anniversary of her death. The Princes' also organized a memorial service. William is currently taking an active role in the Royal Air Force as a search and rescue helicopter pilot; this role enables him to take an active role as a member of the armed forces without him being deployed on combat. A long-term career in the military is unlikely due to his future ascension to the throne. From birth, it was destined that William would be an ambassador for the Monarchy. But the Royal Family would not have expected his popularity to be as great as it is, and he is warmly welcomed on all his travels all over the world. William's destiny is clear, the day is approaching when he will be crowned King, and with Kate by his side the Monarchy is in very safe hands.

BIOGRAPHY, THE: REMEMBERING 9/11

'Remembering 9/11' History - Special - 90 mins 2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States of America. The September 11 attacks on America were of surprising disproportion. Certainly, America had suffered surprise attacks in the past, nonetheless the 9/11 attacks were devastating and heralded in a new kind of war - the war on terror; and a new enemy - Osama bin Laden The relationship between the United States and bin Laden began in the 1980's during the Cold War, when the US supplied billions of dollars worth of secret assistance to rebel groups in Afghanistan fighting the Soviet occupation. It was during this time that Saudi-born Osama Bin Laden joined the Afghan resistance. Bin Laden and his comrades had their own sources of support and training, receiving little assistance from the US. After the Cold War ended, they established a potential general headquarters for future jihad - and Al-Qaeda was born. In August 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, and the US led the coalition against Saddam Hussein, which included Saudi Arabia. The presence of American soldiers in Saudi Arabia, enraged bin Laden upon his return to the country, as well as other Arabs. From that point, Osama bin Laden turned radically anti-American. By 1998, Al-Qaeda felt comfortable enough in their Afghan sanctuary to issue a declaration of war against Americans and later a fatwa to kill Americans and their allies. Between 1998 and 2000 they attacked US embassies and military forces on foreign soil. As 2001 began, counterterrorism officials were receiving frequent but fragmentary reports about threats, including more than 40 intelligence articles in the President Daily Briefs from January to September 2001 that related to bin Laden himself. As the sun rose on September 11, 2001 millions of New-Yorkers woke to a beautiful day. Some commuters were making the trip to south Manhattan where the World Trade Center and its Twin Towers stood - home to some of the biggest financial firms. It seemed like just another ordinary day. In Washington, it was business as usual - some going to the Pentagon, others across the Potomac River were getting ready for a Congress session. For those heading to an airport to catch a flight, weather conditions could not have been better for a safe and pleasant journey. By 8 am, amongst the everyday travellers were 19 hijackers who had boarded transcontinental flights - all defeating the security procedures that America's airports had in place to prevent these occurrences. At 8:46 am, the clear blue sky in south Manhattan was suddenly overshadowed as American Airlines flight 11 suddenly and unexpectedly crashes into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Thick white smoke explodes out from the top of the north face, stunning New Yorkers who have witnessed it below. A gaping hole, through floors 93 to 99, left many to believe that a terrible accident had happened. Burning fire in the upper floors traps people. For some, the heat and suffocating smoke is so intense that to jump from the building is the only option. But the world is unaware that the worst was still to come. Then, shortly after 9 am, at 950 km/h, a clear message is delivered: the first plane to crash is not an accident - America is under attack. The next plane, United Airlines flight 175, strikes levels 78 to 85 of the South Tower, forming a barrier between hope on the lower levels and despair above the impact zone. The wingtip grazes the 78th floor sky lobby, instantly killing dozens of people waiting for elevators. Meanwhile, many in the Pentagon in Washington receive phone calls telling them to turn on their televisions. Like so many they watch in horror the smoke coming from the World Trade Center as the live pictures are broadcast. Suddenly, without any warning, American Airlines Flight 77 containing 5 hijackers crashes into the western side of the Pentagon and starts a violent fire. The passengers and crewmembers are all killed instantly. The blast from the plane and the heat from the resulting fire kill 125 Pentagon personnel. At 9.45 am all United States airspace is shut down and civilian aircraft are grounded. All flights are ordered to land at the nearest airports as soon as possible. United Airlines Flight 93 also receives the order to land but no reply comes back from the cockpit. Back in New York, the South Tower collapses, 56 minutes after being struck. As the roar of the collapse goes silent, a gray white cloud of powder concrete and gypsum rushes through the streets. People are covered in dust, rubbing their eyes and looking dazed. The streets of New York look like a war zone. The landscape is unrecognizable. It is estimated that the collapse of the South Tower killed 630 people, almost everyone above the impact zone. At 10:03 am the last hijacked plane will miss its target, thanks to the courage of the passengers who revolt against the hijackers onboard. Amidst the chaos, the aircraft ploughs into an empty field in Shanksville Pennsylvania, fragmenting upon impact. Flight 93's intended target still remains a mystery. From the moment Flight 11 hit the North Tower evacuations proceeded efficiently. The elevators were all unusable, however three stairways survived. The 102 minutes between the impact and collapse allowed the vast majority of the workers below the impact zone to escape the building safely. No one on the 91st floor or above is believed to have survived. It is estimated that approx. thirteen hundred people on these floors perished. Soon after the North Tower had crumbled, hundred of dazed fire fighters were on the scene. Many were crying, others were in shock, trying to come to term with what had just happened, and the loss of their colleagues who died inside the towers. The collapse of the towers took an incredible toll on them. The New York fire department suffered 343 fatalities, the largest loss of life of any emergency response agency in history. The Port Authority Police department suffered 37 losses, and The New York Police department lost 23 officers, including the FDNY chief of Department and the Port Authority Police Superintendent. Early that afternoon, the first bulldozers arrive to begin moving debris and search for bodies. Officials feared the collapse of 7 World Trade Center, another high-rise burning in the complex, and by early evening, 7 World Trade Center finally fell. As night felt on New York and Washington, what everyone knew, was confirmed. That America's citizens, their way of life, and their freedom had come under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. As the sun rose on the 12th against a curtain of gray soot and smoke, New York was an urban wasteland of deserted streets and crushed vehicles, the World Trade Center complex smouldering. In the afternoon, the city's citizens were shaken even more by the rumbling collapse of the remainder of the South Tower. Fears of gas leaks and the possibility of asbestos and other toxic substances in the air further complicated the rescue effort. Amidst the rubble, protruded the remains of a cell phone tower. Someone climbed the tower and attached an American flag - the nation's symbol of shining light. Everyone stopped and saluted for a second. For Americans, understanding what happened in the days that followed proved difficult. No one would ever forget this day, and the pain is still there a decade later, for many families of loved ones lost on that fateful day. Terrorist attacks may shake the foundations of the biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundations of a country and it's people such as The United States of America.

BIOGRAPHY, THE: TWILIGHT - OBSESSION

"Obsession" An unauthorized story on Twilight' Just like the characters in the novel, attempting to turn humans into vampires, Twilight readers have crossed over into the dark side of obsession. It began with a dream. A girl and a boy, in a meadow, falling in love despite the inherent danger - he's a vampire and she's human, and the lure of her blood is almost too much for him to bear. Author Stephenie Meyer woke up from her dream and began furiously writing the story that would become one of the world's best-selling teenage romances, and in turn, a movie franchise that has bitten the public hard and refused to let go! Known as the "Twilight Phenomena", the success of the books and movies has meant that its cast of beautiful people, headed by relative unknowns Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, are now world-wide household names, adored by millions of teenage girls, and their mums! Directed by Catherine Hardwicke, the first movie chronicles how Bella goes to live with her policeman father Charlie in the wettest part of the continental US, where unbeknownst to her - at least, at first - there lives a coven of vampires posing as well-to-do foster family, the mysterious Cullen's'. Bella's subsequent romance with Edward is as intense as it is dangerous, and when a rival group of vampires threatens the Cullen's' existence in Forks, Bella unwittingly becomes a target. Edward, helped by his "family" then races to protect her from harm, only to refuse to grant her one wish - to become a vampire and spend eternity with him. The books read like a teenage confessional, which is probably why they appeal to the age group they were marketed at; and the movies have been no exception. The global success of the first film came as a complete shock to all those involved, especially due to it's lack of big-budget special effects, but even as the hype behind New Moon erupted, Pattinson was still getting used to his meteoric rise to fame, appearing dumbfounded at the mania, joking that he's going deaf from all the screaming!
