GREENER WORKPLACE, A: PLANNING AND MANAGING SUSTAINABILITY

The green-approach to life started as a grass-roots, community-based movement. It has now permeated the mainstream to the point where businesses across the globe realise that adopting an environmentally sound philosophy is essential - not only to maintain credibility and protect the bottom line, but also to attract the best employees. People expect business to be at the fore with regard to sustainability - to lead changes in thinking and behaviour.

This program discusses the benefits of green-workplaces. The lead must come from the top - managers and business owners find themselves needing to be increasingly in tune with sustainable and ecological thinking. We hear from leading business people and sustainability experts about environmental corporate culture and practices and gain an insight into how to effectively implement a policy and strategy. Featured in the program are Geoff Gourley a leading business environmentalist and consultant, representatives from Fujitsu, and Australian Environment Minister, Peter Garrett.

SMALL BUSINESS CASE STUDIES: TATTOOS, PEDALS AND THINGS BIZARRE

This program looks at four small businesses in various stages of development. Two are start-up businesses that have only been in operation for 12-18 months. The other two business owners have around twenty-five years of experience between them. Included is a husband and wife floor restoration business that uses only natural plant-based oils. We also see a tattoo artist, a bike shop proprietor, and a young man and woman who have opened a cross between a retail store and a museum, selling scientific curiosities. Each of the business operators is asked a range of similar questions that consider their start up, the running of the business on a daily basis, and the future they see for themselves. Areas covered include financing the business, ownership, location, market research, the business plan, marketing, accounts and stock control, competition and staff, among others.

    MANAGING GENERATION Y

Three generations are now in the workplace, and the youngest - Generation Y - are making their mark. They view the workplace very differently from Baby Boomers or Generation X. Having grown up with technology, they are digital natives - information and communication has always been instant. They want to go a long way in a short time; they often don't settle for just being told - they want to know why; and being constantly connected with a social network is, more often than not, critical to survival. Featuring comment from author and director of Essence Communications Penny Burke, James Masini from Hippo Jobs and Susan Lin, the Young Australian Businessperson of the Year, this program explores a range of issues and strategies associated with attracting, retaining, effectively managing, and capitalising on the many strengths of Generation Y workers.

    Key Learning Points
  • Understanding the characteristics of Generation X and the Baby Boomers
  • Understanding the needs, experiences and wants of Generation Y
  • Strategies for managing Generation Y
  • Strategies for making workplace change in order to attract and retain Generation Y

MARKETING FOR BEGINNERS: A CASE STUDY IN RETAIL

Small businesses often focus on a very specific market niche. It helps them stand out in the crowded streetscape of shops. This case study compares the retail operations of two shops run by two brothers in two very different locations using a common product base - textiles imported from Guatemala. Do things that sell well in one location sell in another? What is the marketing mix? An expert in small business management assesses the marketing approach of the company and discusses more effective marketing strategies.

    EMAIL ETIQUETTE

There is little doubt that email is an extremely useful innovation that has changed, and continues to change, the way we communicate. However, the fact that email is different to both voice and paper based communications can be a source of frustration for many people.

This up to date program gives viewers an understanding of the conventions that have been developed by email users over the years to facilitate effective communication. In addition, the program exposes many of the myths that exist regarding such issues as email privacy, and warns of possible dangers when using email. The words 'Spamming' and 'Flaming' may not make sense to many people, but chances are they've come across examples of this type of behaviour in their email usage.

The animated 'cyber-postman', who features throughout the program, has seen every example of bad email usage you could imagine. With his assistance we provide a comprehensive introduction to the etiquette of using email.
