ANGRY? TEN WAYS TO COOL OFF

Anger is a natural emotion, but one that generates intense feelings in young children, making them quick to "explode," "burn," or "boil over." Helping students see how "hot" words like these describe the physical and emotional changes anger can cause, hands-on workshop demonstrates ten effective strategies to use to "cool off" -- handle angry feelings without breaking things or hurting other people or themselves.

Scenarios illustrate ten ways kids can cool off whenever an angry situation leaves them ready to explode, boil over, or burn up. In "Stop So You Can Think," they learn they can 1) freeze, 2) count to ten, or 3) walk away. In "Use Your Words," they can 4) ask a question, 5) state how they feel, 6) write down how they feel, or 7) talk silently to themselves. In "Get Busy," the many suggestions include 8) jump rope, 9) draw a picture, or 10) stand on your head.

Pauses at key points allow students to use the accompanying worksheets for skills practice. Workshop comes complete with master copies of the worksheets, discussion questions, suggestions for using the workshop, and an extensive bibliography.

CONFLICT MANAGERS

This hands-on workshop teaches students the skills they need to become conflict managers. Presents conflicts typical of student experience and demonstrates the process for mediating them. Accompanying worksheets provide practice in each step of the mediation process.
Step-by-step, this program illustrates a conflict manager's game plan: 1) making introductions and setting ground rules; 2) defining the problem; 3) finding solutions; and 4) agreeing on a solution. After each step, worksheets present a conflict that challenges students to use each newly learned mediation skill.
Special focus on active listening skills, expressing feelings and needs, and brainstorming for win-win solutions helps students become the kind of conflict managers who are truly able to settle playground disputes. The program has master copies of the worksheets, suggestions for using the workshop, and an extensive bibliography and resource list.

    I'M SO MAD! MAD! MAD!

Some kids say mean things or lash out physically when they are mad, others sulk or take their anger out on the nearest target without ever recognizing the underlying feeling that is causing their misery. While always keeping in mind that anger is normal, this program helps young students differentiate between healthy and unhealthy expressions of this common emotion.

Say How You Feel: Emma is waiting at the library for her friends who have stood her up, when she meets her neighbor Liana. When Emma says she's not mad because it isn't "nice to get angry," Liana helps her understand why it's important be aware of your feelings and not keep them inside. Timmy's friends make fun of his batting skills during practice. He sulks rather than tell them how angry their comments make him feel. Once he does tell them, they apologize.

Solve the Problem/Resolve the Anger: Megan inadvertently ruins Ashley's Field Day poster and Ashley retaliates by ruining Megan's lunch. Then Megan finds out what Ashley did and confronts her. At the movies Mark and his cousin Rachel are taunted by two boys about being a "couple." Later, Mark is so furious he takes it out on his younger sister. Ashley and Mark see that their ways of dealing with anger not only don't solve their problems, but make things worse. They learn healthier ways of handling their situations.

Turning a Negative Into a Positive: Timmy is mad at himself for not being a good player and wants to quit the team. His coach encourages him to use the energy he's spending on his negative feelings to practice harder and improve his hitting. Roshanda and her friends are angry when they learn their roller blading park is being closed. They turn angry energy into positive action by getting up a petition to save the park.

    TEEN-ADULT CONFLICT: WORKING IT OUT

The drive toward autonomy, a normal feature of adolescent life, is all too frequently sidetracked by battles with adults over issues of power and control. Using scenarios illustrating typical adult-teen conflicts, program teaches conflict resolution techniques specifically aimed at helping teens get along better with the adults in their lives. Emphasizes good communication skills, brainstorming for solutions, and negotiating for win-win solutions.

Eve, who interns at a local radio station, wants to attend an upcoming music festival with her co-workers, but her father refuses to allow her to go because last year's festival was too rowdy. When Mr. Hughes, the advisor to Eric's school newspaper, insists that Eric cover a school board meeting rather than the music festival, Eric argues back and ends up quitting the paper. Frustrated by the out-of-date software she and her co-workers are forced to use and blamed for a problem that occurs as a result, Marissa blows up at her boss.

Eager for help in resolving their conflicts, the three teens call in to a teen-advice talk show at the local radio station. Eve learns that if she sends her father an adult message rather than a child message, she'll get back an adult message instead of a parent message. Eric discovers that if he discusses his differences with Mr. Hughes and brainstorms for solutions, the two can work things out. By applying the negotiation skills she learns about from the talk-show hosts, Marissa convinces her boss to invest in new software.

They try talking it out and brainstorming for solutions, but can't solve the problem. Dan's mother suggests that the way to work out their problem is to get rid of what caused it. They return the game.
