It empowers children to feel good about themselves and helps create a more cooperative classroom. WE'RE IN, YOU'RE OUT: LOOKING AT CLIQUES

Finding their niche in a particular social group can be the most important focus in a youngster's life. The idea of being left out or not belonging to a particular group can make kids miserable. This program helps youngsters look at the positive and negative impact of cliques on both individual groups.

Emily is starting a new school. She's anxious about where she'll fit in. After finding a group of kids that share many of the same interests, she feels like she belongs.

Amber, Chloe and Samantha are part of the popular crowd. They look down on kids who do things they consider 'un-cool'. Since Samantha has shown an interest in ballet, something on their 'un-cool' list, they have begun to ridicule her and leave her out of their plans. Eventually, Samantha realizes that pursuing her own dream is more important than fitting in with friends who don't support her.

Derek has two groups of friends with different interests. At first Derek thinks he has to choose between the two groups, but soon discovers that it's ok for him to enjoy his relationships with both sets of friends.

LET'S MAKE UP: LEARNING ABOUT FORGIVENESS

Of all the many skills children need for managing social interactions and relationships, one of the most difficult for them to master is knowing when to make and accept an apology. When children do something to hurt another childˇ¦s feelings through a misunderstanding, disagreement, or accident, they tend to interpret the situation without considering how their behavior might affect the other child. But what socializes children is their ability to respond in a caring way to other children. Encouraged to look at a situation from the hurt childˇ¦s point of view, even the youngest students can understand how saying two magical words, ˇ§Iˇ¦m sorry,ˇ¨ can help them handle the conflict. Using three engaging scenarios bracketed by upbeat music and lyrics, Let`s Make Up: Learning About Forgiveness shows students how apologizing when you are wrong, refusing to hold a grudge, and recognizing that it takes two to make up can solve problem situations.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION FOR STUDENTS: PEER CONFLICT

Students often come into conflict with each other, but dealing with such situations in an objective manner is rare. In Peer Conflict, students will examine ways to deal with each other when conflicts arise through two vignettes. In "Hacking, Cracking, Stealing," a student is cajoled by the star player of the football team to hack into the school's computer system in order to amend a failing grade. And in "With Friends Like These...," a new student is invited to a makeover party by the most popular girls in school, unwittingly joining them in "acquiring" supplies for the event.

Being harassed because of one's sex or sexual orientation is uncalled for, but often, such harmful attention is derived from students not knowing that they've crossed the line. In Sexual Harassment, students will develop a better understanding of ways to deal effectively with such situations through two detailed vignettes. In "Crossing the Line," a male student's overt flirtations with a female peer continually puts her into embarrassing situations and illustrates how to avoid being the recipient of such harassment, as well as when such attention has gone too far. In "It's My School Too!," a talented violinist is forced to drop out of high school due to harassment by his classmates over his alleged sexual orientation, dramatizing how students can be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

SAY NO AND KEEP YOUR FRIENDS

Say No and Keep Your Friends teaches middle schoolers how to stand up for themselves and still retain valued friendships. Learning these skills is critical for two reasons. On the most obvious level, it gives young people tools to resist peer pressure to use drugs or alcohol, have sex too soon, or get involved in illegal activities. On a more subtle level, it can enhance their self-esteem and contribute to their self-confidence at a vulnerable time of life.

Among the techniques that work are changing the subject, talking things out, turning the tables on the person, refusing to continue the conversation, and just walking away. What doesn't work is yelling, continually making excuses, or getting angry.

Viewers discover that in dealing with a friend, the way in which the "no" is said is very important. They learn about sending mixed messages, "Say what you mean," the program advises, "and mean what you say." Not only is it a good idea to clearly and briefly state the reasons for refusing a request, but it is equally appropriate to look for alternatives and compromises.

Viewers also learn that when pressured to do something dangerous or illegal, the best thing to do is to ask themselves, "Is this the kind of friend I want?" and then accept that the loss of a friendship is a necessary consequence where personal safety or important values are involved.

IN SEARCH OF CHARACTER VOLUME 7: HONESTY

This video begins with the surprising account of two boys who triggered a fire storm of criticism by committing a simple act of honesty. But as we see from their experience and the teen discussions that follow, choosing to be honest or dishonest does something to our character. Lying makes us liars. Cheating makes us cheaters. But being honest frees us to be real. Not only do honest people have stronger, better relationships with others, but their honesty makes them better people and it makes our world a better place.

IN SEARCH OF CHARACTER VOLUME 8: COURAGE

It takes a lot of courage to stand up for what's right when we stand alone. Or to do what's right despite disapproval and negative peer pressure. Or even to take risks that are for our own good. In this program we learn what it means to be morally courageous and how that empowers our lives. And we see proof positive in the courageous story of a teenage boy who broke from a gang and changed his friends so he could succeed in school and turn his life around.

As a case in point we see the poignant story of a teenage girl with cerebral palsy, whose diligent approach to living has enabled her to pursue and attain ambitious goals despite her disability.

IN SEARCH OF CHARACTER VOLUME 10: INTEGRITY

Being a person of integrity means you are solid, principled, true to your very best self. It means you walk your talk by living up to your highest ethical values. It means you always try to do what's right even in tough situations, and you don't let temptation compromise your values. This program reveals the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) ways that life puts our integrity to the test, and profiles six teenagers whose integrity has proven to be a gift to themselves as well as to the world.
