SCIENCE FUNDAMENTALS: ECOSYSTEMS AND BIOMES

The moment you step out the front door you are walking into a biome? Your own backyard is part of an ecosystem? Wildlife and the environment work together to make the world a harmonious place. The climate, animals, and vegetation vary in many different parts of the world which make that area a specific biome with its very own characteristics.

When the seasons change, the weather changes and the environment changes, too. When the weather gets cooler, leaves fall off the trees, animals move or leave the area, and the grass dies and changes colors. One little change in the ecosystem can effect the whole biome? That is what an ecosystem is and how it works! By viewing this program, students will learn about several different major biomes of the world and how they interact with each other.

After viewing the ECOSYSTEMS AND BIOMES program and engaging in the activities provided, students will be able to:
  • Define ecosystems and biomes
  • Appropriately use introduced vocabulary in writing and discussion
  • Identify the seven major biomes
  • List characteristics of different biomes
  • Identify the geographic location of the major world biomes
  • Become more aware of the role of the environment and their job in the ecosystem

    PLANET EARTH: CAVES

Descend into the only habitat not directly driven by sunlight to discover some of the most peculiar creatures on Earth. Cut off from the rest of the world, animals living in caves have become specialists adapted to living with sparse food, complete darkness, and acidic conditions. Such limited resources have forced cave dwellers into important and distinctive niches in their ecosystems. Water also plays a large role in the environment by offering a home to many species as well as forming caverns and such prominent cave features as stalactites and stalagmites. Traveling with experienced divers, the presentation tracks dangerous expeditions through largely unexplored subterranean regions of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and New Mexico to reveal unique underwater passages and crystal-lined caverns.
