CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: PRESCRIPTIVE INTEGRATIVE PLAY THERAPY

With Athena A. Drewes, PsyD, RPT-S

During the period of middle childhood, which occurs between the ages of 6 - 12, children will experience social, emotional, and cognitive developmental changes. Such changes can be challenging for therapists treating children within this age group who may have behavioral and psychological disorders.

Because behavioral and psychological disorders for children and adolescents are multi-layered and complex, often with several overlapping problems, a multifaceted treatment approach is needed.

Dr. Athena A. Drewes' approach to middle childhood play therapy consists of a prescriptive, integrative method. In this video program, Dr. Drewes demonstrates her therapeutic approach with an eight-year-old child who is a victim of bullying in school, has low self-esteem and anger management problems.

In the session, Dr. Drewes checks in with the client, demonstrates a directive approach using play-based techniques that address the presenting problem issues, and then conducts a nondirective, child-led period of time to facilitate relaxation and self-regulation.

PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT: THE MMPI-2-RF IN PRACTICE

With David M. McCord, PhD
Hosted by Kathleen T. Bechtold, PhD

The MMPI-2-RF, the latest revision to the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, is one of the most widely researched and used psychological assessment instruments.

The MMPI-2-RF conceptualizes personality and psychopathology as a hierarchical arrangement of relatively narrow, focused, dimensional constructs. By comprehensively measuring 50-60 clinically relevant characteristics to describe the individual, the MMPI-2-RF both reflects and contributes to a historic paradigm shift in terms of how personalities and psychopathologies are rendered: Rather than trying to fit clients into specific diagnostic categories or label them with disorders, the MMPI-2-RF describes the individual as clearly and coherently as possible.

In this video, Dr. David M. McCord demonstrates how to administer the MMPI-2-RF while addressing a client's questions and concerns both compassionately and without divulging information that would influence the outcome of the assessment.

SYSTEMS OF PSYCHOTHERAPY: THERAPEUTIC ASSESSMENT WITH ADULTS

With Stephen E. Finn, PhD

Therapeutic assessment is a short-term intervention in which traditional psychological tests are used collaboratively with clients to help them understand themselves better and find solutions to their persistent problems.

In its underlying philosophy, therapeutic assessment is related to humanistic and human-science psychology, to narrative, interpersonal, and systemic models of psychotherapy, and to intersubjectivity theory. However, therapeutic assessment also uses techniques from many schools of psychotherapy, including cognitive therapy, behavior therapy, psychodynamic therapy, interpersonal therapy, and Gestalt therapy.

In this video, Dr. Stephen E. Finn demonstrates how the core values of therapeutic assessment - collaboration, respect, humility, compassion, openness, and curiosity - are all used to help a client acknowledge and process the dilemma of change and consider viable alternative ways of dealing with difficulties.

CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL GROUP PLAY INTERVENTIONS

With Linda A. Reddy, PhD

In this video, Dr. Linda A. Reddy demonstrates evidence-based approaches to implementing cognitive-behavioral group play interventions with children who are 4-10 years old. Often times, children with neurocognitive and behavioral issues such as ADHD, have trouble interacting with other children and adults.

The cognitive-behavioral approach shown here uses group play interventions to help children develop prosocial skills such as sharing, asking for and offering help. Dr. Reddy's group-play interventions include a multimodal approach that integrates cognitive-behavioral interventions and skill-intensive opportunities for learning through teaching modalities, as well as structured group therapy interventions.

In this video, Dr. Reddy demonstrates cognitive-behavioral group play interventions with four elementary-aged school children through several exercises in developmentally appropriate games.

SPECIFIC TREATMENTS FOR SPECIFIC POPULATIONS: PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

With V. Mark Durand, PhD

In Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, V. Mark Durand demonstrates his positive parenting approach to working with mothers and fathers of children who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

ASD is an increasingly common diagnosis among children, and symptoms such as repetitive behaviors and communication deficiencies can challenge parents, often affecting their personal relationships and daily activities. The evidence-based approach demonstrated in this video focuses on increasing a sense of hope in these parents.

In this video, Dr. Durand works with a single-mother of an 8-year old boy with autism spectrum disorder. He helps her see that how she thinks about herself and her son impacts on her relationship with him at home. He then helps her focus on seeing the improvements she has seen in her son's behavior over time, and encourages her to take credit for these positive changes.

MANAGING CONFLICT IN SCHOOLS: A NEW APPROACH TO A DISCIPLINARY OFFENSE

With John Winslade

School counselors can play a useful facilitative role in addressing offenses at school without resorting to punishment. Restorative practices are about addressing the harm done to relationships by an offense rather than framing the act as a challenge to school rules or authorities. Here Dr. Winslade facilitates a restorative conference informed by narrative ideas.

The demonstration involves two female students, former close friends, who engaged in cruel and threatening behavior through Facebook after a conflict arose over a boy. The situation brings together a community of care around an offense, including the offender, the victim, parents, teachers, school administrators, and friends, to help to set things right.

UNDERCOVER TEAMS: RE-STORYING THE BULLY RELATIONSHIP

    With Mike Williams

Traditional responses to bullying and harassment in schools usually focus on either punishment or exclusion of the person or persons who are bullying or by attempts to change the behavior of the victim. This sends the message that bullying is not so much wrong as it is reserved for those in positions of authority.

Undercover teams by contrast, use a relationally transformative and deeply respectful approach based on the principles of narrative mediation. Those responsible for the bullying are recruited into a select team who make it their mission to interrupt bullying behaviors.

This workshop uses real-life stories at one New Zealand secondary school to describe how the undercover team approach is used in a strategic way to disrupt a story of bullying relations and rewrite an alternative story of support for the victim. It describes the creation of the team, its progress, and a new story of peaceful relations in the classroom.

PSYCHOLOGY IN THE SCHOOLS: WORKING WITH CHILDREN WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED NEGLECT OR ABUSE

    With Wes Crenshaw, PhD

In Working With Children Who Have Experienced Neglect or Abuse, Dr. Wes Crenshaw demonstrates his approach to working with children who have been neglected or sexually or physically abused. Because most offenders in cases of abuse or neglect are within the child's family, this approach by necessity treats the entire family system, and the goal of therapy is to recontextualize the act of injustice, in both the offender's and the victim's minds.

In this session, Dr. Crenshaw works with three sons who were neglected and abused by their mother, who is addicted to drugs. Dr. Crenshaw listens to the painful experiences of this family and then helps the boys and their father to place the mother's behavior within the broader context of their lives.

CHILDREN OF THE CAMPS: THE DOCUMENTARY

    With Satsuki Ina, PhD

A powerful, thought-provoking program perfect for use in cultural competency and awareness classes. We are sure it will provide you and your students a deeper understanding of the impact of racism, and discussions that travel far outside the classroom.

Shortly after the Japanese attack on Peal Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066. It led to the mass evacuation and incarceration of over 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry... more than half were children.

The impact of the World War II internment on Japanese Americans still lingers in the form of humiliation, anger, shame, regret and abandonment. This program provides a rare glimpse into the very private lives of a few of these Japanese Americans who have not previously talked openly about the trauma of their internment experience. Satsuki Ina, a psychologist and former internee, leads a three-day intensive group therapy where the participants give words to their childhood trauma and mirror each other's experiences. In so doing, the group members allow themselves to feel and subsequently let go of the humiliation and shame they have been holding onto for many years.

This film is a powerful lesson in racism in the United States, and provides a group therapy model on how to help heal the wounds caused by institutionalized oppression. In light of the recent wars in the Middle East, this film is more important than ever, and is a must-see for anyone wanting to understand how intolerance, prejudice and racism deeply impact the lives of Americans.

    CONSULTATION: CREATING SCHOOL BASED INTERVENTIONS

By Jon Carlson, PsyD, EdD Don Dinkmeyer, Jr., PhD

If your work involves children - either directly or indirectly - understanding how to consult with parents and teachers is a crucial clinical task. Here, watch two seasoned experts present key ideas and interventions for conducting successful school-based consultations.

Successful school-based consultation requires an understanding not only of child behavior, but also of the myriad issues children's parents and teachers bring to the table. In this rich video, Drs. Jon Carlson and Don Dinkmeyer offer insight and strategies that will not only support your growth as a consultant, but also help you make a deeper impact on youth by targeting the "managers of the system." Here, you'll learn about the underlying messages of different types of child misbehavior, get tools for helping adults recognize and soften their own reactivity, and find realistic ideas for shifting these fraught dynamics.

Seasoned experts in the field, Carlson and Dinkmeyer begin with an overview of key school-based consultation theories, such as the "useless triangle," and skills such as empathy, communication analysis, and focusing on the adult's responses to the child. Throughout the video, they highlight the complex issues that can result in power struggles, academic problems, and tantrums.

You'll also see each clinician conduct several actual consultations, including meetings with individual teachers, parent-child pairs, and a group of five mothers of children varied in age. You'll watch Carlson work with a pre-kindergarten teacher so frustrated by her 4-year-old student's antics that she's ready to send him to special education; an exacerbated mother who's resorted to "pleading" with her son to do his chores; and a resigned father whose inability to enforce his son's bedtime has led to the son's "tuning him out." You'll also witness Dinkmeyer in action, working with a teacher's aide who's at a loss with her sixth grader's lack of school preparation, as well as the aforementioned mother's group.

Collaborative and empathic while also direct and practical, Carlson and Dinkmeyer each lead their clients to positive, hopeful outcomes. If you're looking for a primer on school-based consultations or examples of work with real clients, this video will help you quickly upgrade your skill set.

By watching this video, you will:
  • Understand the theoretical foundations of school-based consultation.
  • Learn how to speak with teachers and parents in an empathic way that also supports change.
  • Discover key interventions for addressing the underlying needs of child misbehavior.

    LEADING GROUPS WITH ADOLESCENTS

By Janice DeLucia-Waack, PhD & Allen Segrist, PhD

In this comprehensive DVD featuring a live, unscripted group with actual high school students, two expert group therapists share their extensive knowledge, making this video a must-see for those new to leading groups as well as for experienced group therapists looking to refine their skills.

One highlight of this video is that it walks the viewer through each stage of a group, giving you a comprehensive understanding of what to do from beginning to end. Beginning with the initial session, you will learn activities to help adolescents get to know each other and become more comfortable in the group, as well as how to talk about ground rules for safety and goal setting.

Then comes the middle stage of the group, in which the focus shifts to skill development and the learning of new behaviors. Here the group explores how thoughts influence feelings, as well as assertiveness skills and incorporating resilience. Finally, learn how to facilitate the termination of a group, which many group therapists would argue is the most important stage. Watch as the group explores what they have learned and how they have helped each other, as they say goodbye and reflect on their time together.

Another bonus to this video is the time the co-leaders and moderator spend reflecting on the group and processing what occurs. This gives the viewer a great degree of insight into the thinking processes of the co-leaders and why they chose specific activities and interventions. The video ends with a lively and candid discussion among the co-leaders and the moderator, in which the group members participate and add their input on how the group was for them.

By watching this video, you will:
  • Learn how to create a therapeutic environment for adolescents that is fun and engaging as well as safe and structured.
  • Discover techniques that help teens tap into their inner strength and resilience.
  • Understand how to facilitate activities and discussions that foster self-discovery and interpersonal learning.
