AT THE GATES OF AUTISM: EMERGING INTO LIFE

As a child, Dr. Temple Grandin was diagnosed as brain-damaged; doctors today would call her autistic. But her condition did not deter her and, with the help of her mother and therapists, she went on to become an expert in animal behavior, designing livestock handling facilities and teaching as an assistant professor at Colorado State University. Much of her expertise with animals comes through lessons learned from her own condition. This program provides the rare opportunity to hear an autistic person discuss her condition and how she deals with life. Dr. Grandin offers many insights into the motivations behind autistic behavior and how parents, teachers, and therapists can better work with autistic children.

CURE FROM THE CRYPT: FIGHTING TUBERCULOSIS, AGAIN

When a crypt containing 200 extraordinarily preserved bodies was discovered in 1994 in the Hungarian town of Vac, it caught the interest of a scientist fighting tuberculosis on the other side of the globe. This program presents the fascinating story of Professor Mark Spigelman, an Australian surgeon turned archaeologist who is using ancient DNA to contend with the biggest bacterial killer in the world today. In what many call the post-antibiotic era, Spigelman's unique genetic research has yielded encouraging results: all the tubercular mummies were missing a TB-resistant gene in their genome; those mummies without TB had the gene.

    GUM DISEASE: BEYOND TOOTH LOSS

Mounting evidence indicates that there is a definite correlation between unhealthy gums and risk factors impacting overall bodily health. In fact, the bacteria that cause gingivitis and periodontitis also multiply the chance of heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, and, for mothers-to-be, premature birth. In this program, dental professionals address these and other related life-threatening conditions; spell out the symptoms, stages, and treatment of periodontal disease; and explain the simple steps to maintaining good oral hygiene.

    E. COLI: CASE OF THE MYSTERIOUS MICROBE

In this factual case study, revelers at a Burns Day celebration in Scotland become ill. When E. coli is suspected, health officials conduct a medical manhunt to discover its source. They and researchers move cautiously from one possible cause to the next - the food served, the water drunk, improper food handling. When none of the investigations prove conclusive, suspicions mount that the microbe was probably passed on by someone sitting at the table where people became ill. During the program, researchers working on the case trace the evolution of the deadly 0157 E. coli strain from animals to ancient humans, and make connections between E. coli and diseases including flu and tuberculosis.

    CAUSES OF HEARING LOSS

This program focuses on the millions of Americans who suffer from hearing loss and examines two important causes: exposure to loud noises and ear infections. Loud noise exposure is a troubling current trend because so many teenagers and young adults frequent rock concerts or listen to music at high volume levels. Such loud noise can destroy the thousands of irreplaceable hearing cells in the inner ear. The only remedy once these cells have been destroyed is a hearing aid. Ear infections are another cause of hearing loss. The program examines how ear infections can develop and the variety of treatments available, from antibiotics to the surgical implantation of tubes.

    CYSTIC FIBROSIS

Cystic fibrosis is the most common genetic killer. In the past, most children with the disease died by the age of 20; today a variety of antibiotics are helping some to live into their 40s. Progress is also being made on creating a genetic test for parents that would detect the defective gene before a child is born. This program from The Doctor Is In looks at how families cope with the uncertainties accompanying the disease and the daily therapies it requires. The camera follows a two -year -old, twenty -year -old, and forty -year -old around at their homes. It also interviews pediatrician William Boyle of the Dartmouth -Hitchcock Medical Center; Joan Milsaps, CF Coordinator for the State of New Hampshire; and Dr. Walter Nolls, a researcher in genetic testing at the Dartmouth -Hitchcock Medical Center.

    ENVIRONMENTAL ILLNESS: BAD CHEMISTRY

Perfumes, aerosols, plastic on television sets - for some people, these everyday chemicals may create health problems ranging from headaches, to breathing difficulties, to loss of consciousness. This program examines the medical and political dimensions of Environmental Illness (EI) - the controversial and mysterious condition whose victims cannot tolerate common chemicals of modern life. Clinical ecologists, a new breed of doctors specializing in EI, believe the condition may result from damage to the immune system caused by exposure to the chemicals that saturate our environment and by overuse of antibiotics. But other physicians do not recognize EI as a medical condition and condemn those who treat it as "cult practitioners." The dispute has given rise to political action, involving government agencies at the city, state, and federal level, and heated in-fighting in the medical profession. EI sufferers are caught in the middle.

    HOW INFECTION STRIKES

This program covers the various ways in which infection is transmitted and how the likelihood of contracting disease can be minimized by taking certain precautions: hand washing to avoid transmitting skin-carried bacteria; precautions against salmonella, staphylococcus, and clostridium; refrigeration and cooking; keeping cooking and eating utensils clean; washing hands after using the bathroom; covering the nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing; cleaning and disinfecting lesions. The program also covers the role of immunization and vaccination in preventing infection, and explains both how unborn babies can pick up infections across the placenta from their mothers and how they can take up antibodies from their mothers while breast-feeding. It makes a particular point of the dangers of infection to intravenous drug abusers, who are more than likely to inject themselves with a host of pathogens as well.

    CHOLERA

Poverty is the breeding ground for a whole range of killer diseases, and for the have -nots of the world, chronic ill health is a constant and unwelcome companion. One of the most terrifying epidemic diseases is cholera - which causes extremely severe diarrhea and can kill within three hours. Up until recently, cholera epidemics were confined to Africa and Asia, but since 1991 the disease has spread rapidly through South America, where it had not been seen in over 100 years. This program examines why the disease has returned and the medical, economic, and political factors that are involved. The program explains how the disease can be eliminated and what the obstacles are to doing so.

    CHOLESTEROL EXPLAINED

This program begins with an introduction of the Framingham study of heart disease factors: it lists the factors, explains which factors have been studied, and describes the differences between those in the study who have and those who have not had heart attacks. It explains how cholesterol is made and used within the body, and explains the difference between HDL and LDL.
