With Scott Patton
In this DVD, Scott Patton shows the processes he uses to create finished character designs for feature films. This DVD explores Patton's fast and efficient method for concept sculpting, skipping the 2D sketch phase all together and designing the character entirely within ZBrush. This method of design is more interactive and has allowed him to work with directors one-on-one directly in 3D. From basic form to final detail, Patton uses a combination of ZBrush's tools and straight forward explanations to show how a character can be created without the usual time restrictions and hassle of most 3D packages. He covers everything from blocking out the forms and fleshing out the muscles, to adding props, detailing with alphas and posing the character.

"Scott Patton is a witch! Burn him! How else can you explain how he's so good at designing characters in 3-D? I don't think you can. No mere mortal can sculpt in 3-D with such swiftness and dexterity as he does. The best animators I've worked with can barely match the eye he has for detail. No... definitely a witch." - Andrew Stanton Writer/Director Wall-e, John Carter of Mars

In this second in a two DVD series, Gil continues to develop Francis' and Paulo's designs into full-body orthographic and 3/4 views. The demonstration finally culminates in a "look and feel" master shot posing the fighters in an alley behind Paulo's butcher shop. In the process, Gil reinforces the key principles from the first DVD: dynamic silhouettes, rhythms, graphic design and composition. He then explores the design brief further, introducing unique lighting approaches, shadow and light relationships, larger composition fundamentals, color treatments to complement the mood, and applying textures, atmosphere and visual effects to enhance the final result.

Beginning with some thoughts on how we define the concept of color, Richard explains various methods people in history have used to systemize color. These systems include the additive and subtractive color wheels, which are addressed as metaphorical maps of color. The basic vocabulary we use to describe color - hue, value and saturation - are explained through illustrative and graphic means. The majority of this DVD is concerned with color harmonies and contrasts, with references to over 350 paintings. This lecture is intended to do more than spend time defining this list of terms - advice is offered about how to best use these "Mechanics of Color" to your advantage, and a few traps to avoid.
Review
"Often color can be a very mysterious subject for artists to fully understand. Whether you are a beginner or an old pro, Richard Keyes will help you to make sense of the use of color in your artwork. Through explanations about the physics of it all to the symbolic use of color, your knowledge of this subject will be greatly enhanced by the content of this DVD, brought to you by one of the world's most insightful lecturers on the subject." - Scott Robertson, Chair of Entertainment Design Art Center College of Design, President, Design Studio Press

In this third of three DVDs in a series, James will cover a wide range of Adobe Photoshop® techniques that he uses as a concept designer in the feature film industry. Focusing on the subject of a contemporary loft interior as a film set, James acts as a location manager, production designer and illustrator to visually explain a common feature film art department pipeline technique. Setting itself apart from other concept art techniques, this DVD concentrates heavily on the smooth integration of photo reference and high-end conceptualization ideas, or what James terms "Photoshop® kit bashing", blurring the line between photo and ideation rendering. Subjects such as using photo scrap as virtual set pieces, texture mapping in 2D, and rendering a wide range of materials from brushed steel to polished hardwood floor are also covered.

"James Clyne is a master when it comes to translating his inner worlds of gigantic structures and machines. His smart construction approach, based on a very open abstract process, gives to his productions a very original feel unseen anywhere else. He is an artist which has recreated a new sci-fi vocabulary with an amazing precision and talent." - Sparth, Concept designer/illustrator, UBISOFT Entertainment

"Definitely one of the finer designers of our generation. Scott's innovative designs bridge the gap between today's fiction and tomorrow's science. His attention to detail is sometimes mind blowing... but he is not somebody to keeps it all to himself. He is so concerned with teaching his knowledge to others that it makes him one of the top educators in digital and traditional art." - Harald Belker Concept Designer

With Neville Page
In this DVD, Neville offers alternative approaches to developing ideas, specifically for character concept development. There are times you want to approach a project with great specificity and then other times you want to put aside presumption and allow for "it" to happen to you. This DVD explores a few approaches to fostering "happy accidents" and ways to efficiently "see" quickly. Neville begins in Photoshop®, very quickly sketching random shapes and areas of value to "find" an image within. After discovering an intriguing image, he takes it to near completion, revealing the importance of staying open to new ideas as he develops a creature. From there he explores the same ideas for head and creature development using ZBrush's mirroring tool. Finally, he finishes with a sculpted ZBrush "sketch" showing ways to keep creativity alive while working in 3D.

Professional art always helps to bring new ideas to life. Although a concept artist has a wide range of responsibilities, their overall mission is to understand the vision of directors, writers, and various clients to help bring their ideas to visual form. No matter what tools technology has to offer, drawing will always be the most fundamental way to develop these ideas as well as helping to discover your own style. In this DVD, Sang Jun dissects his concept process through four different ideations, from initial thumbnailing to final refinement in Adobe Photoshop®. Learn how to generate ideas, how to strengthen aspects such as silhouette, rhythm, gesture and expression, and how to develop costume design. Watch as creatures and characters come to life before your eyes and learn the steps it takes to communicate your vision clearly and efficiently with little more than a pencil and paper.

He then takes the viewer through the step-by-step process behind executing a typical character design for feature film, addressing the mind-set behind creating original, thought-provoking designs. Wayne begins his demo with a set of thumbnails, delves into the decision-making process, and then moves on to working up a finished drawing. As he draws, he offers his thoughts on work methodology, character creation and the technical issues of pencil rendering, including the various subtleties of line-work and shading, as well as the materials and their inherent properties. This DVD is geared towards novice and seasoned artists alike, presenting an introduction into the worlds of concept art and traditional rendering.

" Watching Wayne Barlowe draw is an intriguing experience. Wayne sets down the lightest of pencil lines as a guide and then, without hesitation, begins the meticulous process of rendering the most astonishingly detailed pencil drawings. As his preparatory lines are so light as to be practically invisible, watching the drawings materialize is akin to developing black and white prints. They simply appear, as if the pencil was a scalpel, cutting away the paper to reveal the images underneath. For someone like myself, who has not the slightest clue where a drawing is going when he begins, there's something alchemical about Wayne's expertise." - John Howe Illustrator

Many of us drew dinosaurs when we were kids. Dinosaurs are beasts of paradox. They inhabited the world between monster and animal, imagination and science. For many, dinosaurs were the introduction to understanding the natural world. It is not surprising that many of the world's leading paleontologists started out as artists themselves. In this DVD, David conveys a strong understanding of dinosaur anatomy mixed with the sheer joy of giving life, personality and motion to these inspiring creatures. He covers a wide range of topics from skeletal structures and muscles, to range of motion and the essential gestures of various body types. David focuses on capturing these elements in the form of quick sketches of both herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs.

In this DVD, Cecil takes the initial idea sketches created from the first volume of this series, "Ideation Sketching" and paints them digitally using Adobe Photoshop®. From ten-minute building shading to coloring a vista layout for a fantasy city, Cecil will use basic painting layer techniques to put down value, color and lighting into multiple scenes. During this process, Cecil will also edit the structure design of some sketches as he paints them. Watch as Cecil breaks down his efficient workflow; demonstrating how he preserves line drawings as he separates value and color in multiple layers, and focuses more on readability and defining shapes rather than surface material rendering. This technique allows him to quickly present painting concepts for a production team to review.

In this first of three DVDs in a series, James will cover a wide range of Adobe Photoshop® techniques that he uses as a concept designer in the feature film industry. Focusing on the subject of futuristic architectural landscapes, James starts with a blank page and quickly delves right into such topics as sketch ideation directly in Photoshop® and blocking in a dynamic composition. Setting itself apart from other concept art techniques, this DVD concentrates heavily on the smooth integration of photo reference and high-end conceptualization ideas, or what James terms "Photoshop® kit bashing", blurring the line between photo and ideation rendering. Subjects such as Photoshop® layer properties, creating custom brushes, and developing architectural concepts are also covered.
Review
"James Clyne is a master when it comes to translating his inner worlds of gigantic structures and machines. His smart construction approach, based on a very open abstract process, gives to his productions a very original feel unseen anywhere else. He is an artist which has recreated a new sci-fi vocabulary with an amazing precision and talent." - Sparth, Concept designer/illustrator, UBISOFT Entertainment

Starting with a photographic backplate and 3D model, Brendan McCaffrey presents an in-depth look at an automotive illustration project step-by-step from wire-frame to finished product, using Maya, Mental Ray and Photoshop®. In phase one, Brendan covers the initial brief, 3D setup and rendering. He then moves on to the view setup, matching the camera, and preparing the model and textures as they relate to high resolution work: shaders for paint, glass, metal and rubber. Brendan proceeds with the environment and lighting setup and on to the final renders of all the required layers and passes. In phase two, he assembles and corrects the render layers and passes in Photoshop®. Brendan then moves on to blending the image into a cohesive whole using non-destructive color correction and adjustment. Finally, he demonstrates how to apply effects and finishing touches. This DVD comes with the project's Photoshop files.

"I had the benefit of discovering Marshall Vandruff's teaching materials many years ago when I first set out to learn how to draw animals and fantasy creatures. Marshall was the first artist to really get me to think about drawing in three dimensions and I still refer to his work to this day! Marshall's teaching style is so wonderfully accessible in its direct and clear approach to drawing realistic animals by thinking around the forms and seeing them as dimensional objects on the page. He manages to break down complex ideas and shapes into easy to understand and easy to reproduce forms that have stuck with me for years and continue to guide my hand to this day." - Scott Spencer Character Designer The Weta Workshop

With Alex Jaeger
In this series, Alex Jaeger demonstrates his process for designing a futuristic military vehicle based on descriptions from a science fiction screenplay. In this second volume, with an emphasis on the production pipeline, he shows how to break down a three-quarter view of a vehicle design into orthographic views for a 3D modeler, and then demonstrates the process for rendering that three-quarter view into a final presentation piece in Adobe Photoshop®. Alex begins with the side orthographic view, showing you exactly how to correctly measure and position each element from your design. He leads you through his workflow to then create top, front, and back views, as well as alternates for "on-road" and "off-road" modes. Throughout the orthographic demo, Alex focuses on keeping the design accurate, well organized and easy for a 3D modeler to "read". He then moves on to rendering the three-quarter view in Photoshop, adding details to the line drawing and finishing with color, lighting, graphics, photo-textures, scale cues and atmosphere to present the vehicle in its world and bring the final design to life.

"I met Marc the first time when my partner, Roger Servick and I were invited to Skywalker ranch for brunch. Marc was part of the amazing group who had just finished work on George Lucas' Episode Two. Looking at Marc's drawing skill, his technique and his enthusiasm for design and image creation I had no doubt he would continue on an ascending professional career. He stopped by our house in Hollywood on his way back to his then residence in Windsor, Ontario, Canada where I had more time to appreciate his creative skill. Now, years later I have the enjoyable opportunity to again reiterate my original assessment of his creative expertise, Marc has an ongoing bright future as a premiere creative talent.
