CITY DARK, THE: A SEARCH FOR NIGHT ON A PLANET THAT NEVER SLEEPS

Directed by Ian Cheney

The definitive story of light pollution and the disappearing stars.

THE CITY DARK chronicles the disappearance of darkness. The film follows filmmaker (and amateur astronomer) Ian Cheney (KING CORN, BIG RIVER,TRUCK FARM), who moves to New York City from Maine and discovers an urban sky almost completely devoid of stars. He poses a deceptively simple question, "What do we lose, when we lose the night?".

Exploring the threat of killer asteroids in Hawai'i, tracking disoriented hatching turtles along the Florida coast, and rescuing birds on Chicago streets injured by collisions with buildings, Cheney unravels the myriad implications of a globe glittering with lights--including increased breast cancer rates from exposure to light at night, and a generation of kids without a glimpse of the universe above. In six chapters weaving together cutting-edge science with personal, meditative sequences reflecting on the human relationship to the sky, THE CITY DARK shines new light on the meaning of the dark.

The film features stunning astrophotography and a cast of eclectic scientists, philosophers, historians, and lighting designers including Hayden Planetarium director Neil deGrasse Tyson, astronaut Don Pettit, neurologist Dr. George Brainard, Harvard Medical School scientist Dr. Steven Lockley, cosmologist Chris Impey, and lighting designer HerveDescottes.

Reviews
  • "The most comprehensive and intelligent documentary on light pollution." - Bob Parks, Executive Director, International Dark-Sky Association

  • "A City Dark really makes you think about what kind of alternatives are both sustainable and feasible." - Louis Proyect: The Unrepentant Marxist

  • "Entertaining and thought-provoking...Mr. Cheney's film is a personal lament for the star-filled night sky he experienced growing up in Maine, but it is neither sorrowful nor a rant; he somehow manages to give this engaging work a sense of humor. He also manages to make it smart...This film makes you want to go find a starry sky to camp under quickly, before it's all gone." - Neil Genzlinger, The New York Times

    CLEAN BIN PROJECT, THE

By Grant Baldwin and Jenny Rustemeyer

What would it take to live waste free? What would be the impact on the planet, and on our lives? The Clean Bin Project follows a couple, Jen and Grant, as they go head-to-head in an uplifting and often-humorous competition to see who can produce the least amount of garbage in an entire year.

Their rivalry presents the serious topics of modern consumption habits and waste reduction in a light-hearted, optimistic way that encourages viewers of all ages to consider what simple steps they can take in their own lives and communities.

As they move through the different seasons of the year, we witness the full range of challenges they face -- from weekly shopping for groceries to holiday gift-giving -- and the creative solutions they come up with.

Beyond avoiding toothpicks and making toothpaste from scratch, their competition includes a deeper examination of the sobering problem of waste in North America and how it contributes to major environmental concerns, such as climate change, ocean pollution and others. The film also looks at how and why our consumption habits have changed in the last few decades, contrasting the throw-away culture of today with times not long ago when people were more conscious of the resources they were using.

The creative projects of renowned artist Chris Jordan and an interview with marine pollution expert Captain Charles Moore help illustrate the problems caused by our wasteful habits, and the important contributions we can each make to solutions.

GREAT FALLS: DISCOVERY, DESTRUCTION AND PRESERVATION IN A MASSACHUSETTS TOWN

    Directed by Ted Timreck

Professional, Native and antiquarian researchers combine to investigate the archaeological history and modern legacy of Eastern Native civilization in Turners Falls, MA.

The town of Turners Falls, Massachusetts is attempting to expand the runway to its airport. The plan calls for the removal of a low hill that contains what Native American tribal representatives identify as a ritual site - a ceremonial stone landscape. The surprising discovery and the on-going effort to understand and protect what may be an extraordinary historical asset, is a dramatic story of environmental and cultural preservation.

The film is part of the Hidden Landscapes Project which represents the joined efforts of hundreds of professional, Native and antiquarian researchers who have generously volunteered to combine their expertise into a chronicle of exploration - a series of video stories that investigate the archeological history and the modern legacy of Eastern Native civilization. The combined vision of so many researchers working together also represents a new approach to the long standing and often, very heated controversy that surrounds the mysterious stone ruins of Eastern North America.

In the case of GREAT FALLS, for the first time, the National Register of Historic Places is using a video production as oral history when considering a site to be recognized.

    Reviews
  • "Provocative and powerful. Great Falls testifies to the willful ignorance and denial of most Americans of the accomplishments of Native Americans and the fragile protection afforded Native sacred sites. It should concern anyone in the ongoing business of discovering America." - Jace Weaver, Professor of Religion and Native American Studies, University of Georgia

  • "Great Falls features a quarter-century's worth of archival footage from the Smithsonian's National Anthropological Archive and was cited by the National Park Service as evidence in securing the inclusion of a hill bearing stone ruins of the Narragansett tribe in Turner Falls, MA in the National Register of Historic Places...Timreck's lucid narration navigates the viewer through an extensive range of landscape anthropology...Recommended for public and academic libraries, especially those serving interests in Native American history." - Library Journal

  • "Powerful and remarkable; noteworthy for what it has done, what it is doing, and how it will influence applied anthropology and archaeology in the Northeast...The Native voice is expressed compellingly and engagingly...The Great Falls reminds those of us who are archaeologists that we may have allowed anthropological skills to atrophy, and insists that we broaden our sometimes myopic scales of investigation." - Alan Leveille, Anthropologist and Archaeologist, Director of Educational Programs, Public Archaeology Lab, NEAA News

    TAR CREEK

    Directed by Matt Myers

Tells the incredible story of the Tar Creek Superfund site in NE Oklahoma and the massive and deadly remains left by the lead and zinc mines there.

TAR CREEK is the story of the worst environmental disaster you've never heard of: the Tar Creek Superfund site. Once one of the largest lead and zinc mines on the planet, Tar Creek is now home to more than 40 square miles of environmental devastation in northeastern Oklahoma: acid mine water in the creeks, stratospheric lead poisoning in the children, and sinkholes that melt backyards and ball fields.

Now, almost 30 years after being designated for federal cleanup by the Superfund program, Tar Creek residents are still fighting for decontamination, environmental justice, and ultimately, the buyout and relocation of their homes to safer ground. As TAR CREEK reveals, America's Superfund sites aren't just environmental wastelands; they're community tragedies, too...until the community fights back.

    CLIMATE REFUGEES

By Michael Nash and Justin Hogan

Climate Refugees is the first feature film to explore in-depth the global human impact of climate change and its serious destabilizing effect on international politics. The film turns the distant concept of global warming into a concrete human problem with enormous worldwide consequences.

Experts predict that by mid-century hundreds of millions of people will be uprooted as a result of sea level rise and an increase in extreme weather events, droughts and desertification. Little is being done to plan for the potential mass migration of millions of refugees who will be forced to cross national borders. According to the UN, there are already more environmental refugees in the world than political or religious refugees. The Pentagon now considers climate change a national security risk and the phrase "climate wars" is being talked about in war-rooms.

The filmmakers traveled the world for nearly 3 years to document the impact of climate change, witnessing inhabitants of countries forced to leave their homes by climatic events with little or no protection. The film features a variety of leading scientists, relief workers, security consultants, and major political figures, including John Kerry and Newt Gingrich. All make a strong case that, whether human-caused or a product of nature, the changing climate is already creating humanitarian disasters and will inevitably lead to worldwide political instability.

Climate Refugees was filmed in Bangladesh, Tuvalu, China, Fiji, Chad, Sudan, Kenya, Maldives, Europe and the US.

    Reviews
  • "Climate Refugees fervently captures the human fallout of climate change. Strong visuals and potent testimony...help sound the alarm for instituting new policies and working together to create solutions to cope with this imminent crisis." - Sundance Film Festival

  • "With leading researchers and high profile political figures, Climate Refugees presents a swell of compelling opinion about the challenges (climate) change puts on the global populations." - Variety

  • "After watching Michael Nash's eye opening documentary, you quickly begin to understand that our own national security is threatened by events happening both within and outside our borders. Nash has raised a very dark red flag; now, it is up to all of us to heed his warning." - Moving Pictures Magazine

    LIFE 8: LOOTING THE SEAS

Investigates the looming collapse of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna stocks and the role EU policies have played in the crisis.

With growing global appetite for sushi, bluefin tuna is big business--one fish can sell for up to a hundred thousand dollars. But scientists and environmentalists now argue that Atlantic bluefin-- the kind caught in the Mediterranean--is on the verge of collapse, and that the rules designed to protect them aren't working. At the heart of the dispute over bluefin tuna regulation is the European Union. Its member states include big fishing countries like France, Spain, and Italy. For the EU, the task is to prevent a final, and terminal, collapse of bluefin stocks. Looting the Seas investigates why, and reveals a world where even the experts seem unable to agree how to ensure the sustainability of Atlantic bluefin stocks.

TERRA ANTARCTICA: REDISCOVERING THE SEVENTH CONTINENT

    By Jon Bowermaster,

Filmmaker, author and adventurer Jon Bowermaster provides a unique, up-close introduction to the stark beauty, fragility and importance of the remote continent of Antarctica. For six weeks Bowermaster and his team explored the Antarctic by sailboat, sea kayak, foot and small plane -- observing first-hand the fast -changing evolution of the continent.

The earth is a complex system with Antarctica its heart. The annual expanding and shrinking of the ice sheet, which holds about 70% of the earth's fresh water, affects the entire planet's weather and oceans. Today, the continent is increasingly impacted by human activities: global warming is causing the ice to melt at a greater pace and endangering wildlife, nations are fighting over Antarctica's natural resources, and the area has become a major tourist destination.

Bowermaster's film mixes footage of stunning scenery with factual information in an engaging and entertaining way. We witness the rarely seen collapse of a massive ice arch, hike through massive snow mountains, visit with biologists tracking declining penguin populations, and scientists monitoring the ozone layer from the site where the hole in the ozone was first discovered.

Jon Bowermaster has traveled around the world for the last decade to study, film and write about the human impact on the world's oceans.

    KING CORN (CLASSROOM VERSION)

    Directed by Aaron Woolf

Classroom version of classic film about how two friends uncover the devastating impact of corn on the environment, public health and family farms.

KING CORN is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation.

In KING CORN, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the East Coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat - and how we farm.

Features Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma, and Earl Butz, former US Secretary of Agriculture.

This disc also includes the new companion film, BIG RIVER, on the environmental consequences of industrial agriculture.

    KING CORN (ORIGINAL VERSION)

By growing an acre of corn in Iowa two friends uncover the devastating impact that corn is having on the environment, public health and family farms.

But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat-and how we farm.

Features Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma, and Earl Butz, former US Secretary of Agriculture.

    Reviews
  • "If we are what we eat, we are corn -- the modern staff of life. In a gentle but extraordinarily subversive narrative, King Corn skillfully takes us through the industrial food chain, from field to plate. All actors in this story receive compassionate treatment -- from Iowa farmers and Colorado cattlemen to diabetic New Yorkers and an engaging Earl Butz, the former USDA Secretary who advocated maximum production, damn the consequences. There are no 'bad guys' here. And yet, the net result is a devastating sketch of a food production system that is economically, ecologically, and medically unsustainable. How did we ever get into such a fix?" - Warren Belasco, Professor of American Studies, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Author, Meals to Come: A History of the Future of Food

  • "King Corn not only describes the debilitating industrialized agriculture system in which farmers are caught, it also reveals a food system that is not serving us citizen-eaters well. The 'cheap food' provided by our industrialized food system may turn out to be very expensive when all of the costs are considered. This film will encourage many citizens and organizations to become engaged in the food debate that has already begun in many sectors of our society and to join with others who are already part of that debate, to change the policies which, as the film points out, helped to create this food system in the first place. Everyone should see this film." - Frederick Kirschenmann, Distinguished Fellow, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture and President of Kirschenmann Family Farms

  • "In this well-crafted film Ian and Curt set off to fulfill their 'dream of fields,' by farming one acre of corn in Iowa. They use that experience to explore the entire corn commodity chain from inputs all the way through to final consumption. Along the way they discover the many successes and failures brought about by the dominance of corn as the basic feedstock for most of the foods we eat. Thus, in a straightforward manner the film displays the tapestry that weaves together overproduction, farm payments, ever-growing farm size, rural depopulation, animal antibiotic use, obesity, and diabetes. I would recommend this film as an excellent introduction to any course on food and agriculture in the United States. Indeed, anyone interested in understanding the problems inherent in corn farming in mid- America-in fact, anyone who eats-should see this film." - Lawrence Busch, University Distinguished Professor, Dept. of Sociology, Director, Institute for Food and Agricultural Standards, Michigan State University

  • "The molecules in most Americans' bodies come more from corn than from any other source; at the same time that it has made us fat, corn monoculture has impoverished the American landscape more than any other organism. And yet, until the filming of King Corn, few Americans had a means to understand why their addiction to high-fructose corn sweeteners is the greatest threat to their health and to the health of rural communities and their landscapes. This film should be seen by every farmer, consumer and student who still believes that America has been made beautiful by our 'amber waves of grain.'" - Gary Nabhan, Author, Coming Home to Eat, Founder, Renewing America's Food Traditions initiative

  • "The somewhat goofy premise of two East Coast 20-somethings heading to Iowa to farm a single acre of corn actually works, and it works well. Students will be pulled in by Ian and Curt's curiosity and doggedness on their mission to understand how corn becomes us. Along the way, we learn quite a bit about the current realities of Midwest crop farming, decline and resilience in rural America, and the contradictory and disturbing implications of U.S. commodity subsidy policy in shaping the options and outcomes of our food system. King Corn presents a compelling mix of experts and regulars with clarity and compassion. It generates enough laughs to be fun, while also stimulating serious thinking about the important topic of how farm practices and policies influence the food we eat." - Clare Hinrichs, Associate Professor of Rural Sociology, Penn State University

  • "No doubt inspired to some degree by Super Size Me this equally engaging, slightly better-crafted docu deftly balances humor and insight...arresting factoids are delivered by helmer Aaron Woolf and collaborators in a package that's as agreeable as it is informative. Subjects' low-key antics, their affectionate regard for the small-town milieu, some delightful stop-motion animation and an excellent rootsy soundtrack by the WoWz all make "King Corn" go down easy, even if you might regard your burger, fries and Coke with suspicion afterward. Handsome lensing and Jeffrey K. Miller's sharp editing are also worthy of note." - Dennis Harvey, Variety

  • "The press materials for "King Corn" trumpet it as a cross between "Sicko" and "Super Size Me," but the film's protagonists, Mr. Ellis and his college friend, Ian Cheney, come off as genial searchers rather than driven interrogators...In the film, Mr. Butz is treated as respectfully as Iowa's plain-spoken farmers, and the golden fields of corn are shot to evoke their majesty. If the filmmakers are going to point any fingers, they say, they will start with themselves." - Joe Drape, The New York Times

  • "King Corn is as relevant as Super Size Me and as important as An Inconvenient Truth in the recent rash of documentaries that challenge our perceptions of daily life in America." - The Austin Chronicle

  • "An enormously entertaining moral, socio-economic odyssey (and statistical bonanza) through the American food industry. Ellis, Cheney, and Aaron Woolf's documentary is clear-minded and fair, but just damningly descriptive enough to leave you distrustful of everything on your plate." - William Morris, The Boston Globe

  • "Gorgeously filmed in digital video and Super-8, using clever stop-motion corn kernel animation and a lyrical score by the "anti-folk" band the WoWz, "King Corn" takes what could be a tiresome agri-civics lesson and delivers a lively, funny, sad and even poetic treatise on the reality behind America's cherished self-image as the breadbasket of the world...It should be required viewing before going into a supermarket, McDonald's or your very own refrigerator." - Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

  • "Where this documentary distinguishes itself, however, is in the unusual amount of warmth it lets into the mix. Cheney and Ellis are both funny and completely unthreatening, which does not mean toothless. Like his stars, Woolf treats both friend and foe (including farm-subsidies inventor Earl Butz) with respect, refraining from sarcasm, superiority, or ambush. "King Corn" insists that we recognize the Corn Belt's beauty and intelligence along with its somewhat self-induced plight." - Janice Page, The Boston Globe

  • "A deceptively intelligent new entry in the regular- Joe documentary genre...a graceful and frequently humorous film that captures the idiosyncrasies of it

TOXIC BUST: CHEMICALS AND BREAST CANCER

    Directed by Megan Siler
    Music by Joshua Myers
    Narrated by Brooke Campanelli

Explores the relationship between breast cancer and exposure to toxic chemicals.

Breast cancer receives a great deal of attention in the U.S. An entire month is devoted to it; millions of dollars are raised for it. People run, walk, write and conduct research -- all for the cause of breast cancer. Yet, despite these efforts, growing numbers of American women develop breast cancer each year and we still do not know why, or how best to prevent it. Most breast cancer funding and research has gone toward treatment, and finding the elusive cure. Far less emphasis has been given to prevention and discovering the causes of breast cancer.

TOXIC BUST, a thought-provoking and visually compelling documentary, uncovers the growing evidence which links breast cancer to chemical exposure.

The film follows a 40-something woman who finds a lump in her breast, but like the majority of women with breast cancer, she has none of the "established" risk factors. As she questions what may have caused her cancer, the film focuses on three cancer "hotspots" (Cape Cod MA, SF Bay Area, and hi-tech manufacturing workers) to more fully explore the connection between breast cancer and chemical exposure in the home, community and workplace.

TOXIC BUST also raises questions about the long term health costs associated with early childhood chemical exposure and highlights the disproportionate toxic burden carried by low-income communities and workers.

Interweaving fiction and documentary, hard science and personal testimony, TOXIC BUST challenges viewers to question how chemical use in the United States undermines the health of its citizens.

    Reviews
  • "In her ground-breaking film Toxic Bust Megan Siler makes a convincing argument that chemicals in the environment could be implicated in the increasing rates of breast cancer. Toxic Bust takes viewers on a virtual journey from the affluent coastal town of Cape Cod to the densely populated San Francisco Bay Area, and then to the high-tech world of Silicon Valley through the experience of women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. These disparate communities share one thing in common: they are home to the highest rates of breast cancer anywhere in the world." - The Milky Way

  • "Toxic Bust is recommended for libraries looking for an introduction to the topic and supporting college programs in health sciences, environmental toxicology and health, women's studies and science." - Lori Widzinski, Educational Media Reviews Online

  • "[Toxic Bust is] well produced and soundly researched, with highly knowledgeable experts offering commentary...a solid production...it resonates so deeply in the public psyche; it belongs in every public library." - Library Journal

LIFE 4: HOW GREEN IS MY VALLEY?

Documents efforts to revitalize the polluted, impoverished communities in the former coal and steel producing valleys of South Wales.

The valleys of South Wales once produced much of the coal and steel which powered industrial development in Britain-and worldwide. Today those industries are gone. Their legacy is a polluted pocket of poverty-180,000 people nestled in the steep-sided windswept valleys of Caerphilly County; where the highest rates for chronic emphysema, cancer, heart disease, asthma, poor housing and sanitation, low birth weight and accidental death combine to mean that people living here suffer the highest mortality rates in Western Europe. There are schemes to regenerate the entire area-health projects, with incentives, working groups, investment and employment strategies-but are these really working and what more can be done to lift this community out of its depression?

LIFE 4: WARMING UP IN MONGOLIA

Unless sustainable alternatives are introduced, Mongolia's dependence on fossil fuels and rapid urbanization threatens the environment.

Ulaan Baatar is the coldest capital city in the world, with winter lasting for seven months of the year. Following the collapse of communist rule in 1991, increasing numbers of Mongolians are moving into the city, where they mostly live in sprawling, polluted and unplanned slums. Today the Mongolian Government is working with international development agencies in an attempt to ensure a sustainable transition into the modern world. This Life film looks at how Mongolia is powering itself. All electricity produced in Mongolia comes from fossil fuels. What can be done to repair environmental damage and introduce sustainable alternatives? Life examines the long-term environmental implications of exhausting Mongolia's natural resources-global warming, environmental degradation, desertification-and asks, what clean technological solutions are there to Mongolia's problems?

    BAKED ALASKA

Looks at the battle over the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in the context of Alaska's accelerated warming.

"The weather really changed", says Eleanor Sam, plucking feathers from a goose. "When we were children we wore thick fur. We don't wear clothes like that any more..."

Temperatures in Alaska are rising ten times faster than in the rest of the world. President George W. Bush is ignoring the warning signs about global warming; after pulling out of the Kyoto convention, he now wants to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. Native Alaskans are divided: the Inupiat Eskimos want the jobs and the money that drilling would bring, but the Gwich'in Indians fear it will destroy their caribou. Alaska is rich in oil-but for every barrel shipped south, damage is done to the delicate balance of Arctic life.

    Reviews
  • "It is important for everyone to see 'Baked Alaska', a wake up call for action on global warming." - Deborah L. Williams, Executive Director, Alaska Conservation Foundation

  • "As documented thoughtfully in 'Baked Alaska', global warming is having significant, adverse impacts on Alaska's environment and indigenous peoples right now. These impacts are unquestionably measurable, costly, and a harbinger of the devastating impacts that global warming will have on the rest of the nation and world. It is important for everyone to see 'Baked Alaska', a wake up call for action on global warming." - Deborah L. Williams, Executive Director, Alaska Conservation Foundation

  • "The case study approach showing communities who are, right now, suffering from the consequences of global warming is very effective." - Jacqueline Fern, Lane Community College

  • "Provides cogent anecdotal and scientific evidence of the impact of the state's rising temperatures through a combination of interviews with tribal members, scientists, oil industry representatives and other citizens. Baked Alaska takes a compelling and objective look at an important issue that should garner interest from individuals beyond the state's boundaries. Recommended for junior high through adult audiences. Recommended" - Todd Hannon, Educational Media Reviews Online

  • "Breathtaking scenery and real people with stories to tell highlight the issues of global warming, that balance of nature, and the environmental costs of our oil consumption. This balanced production would be useful to generate discussion in science and environmental studies classes." - School Library Journal

  • "Well produced, with excellent scenic footage and narration. [Baked Alaska] presents a documented explanation of the dilemma in order to comprehend the different community perspectives." - Library Journal

    HARRIMAN ALASKA EXPEDITION RETRACED, THE

Two scientific expeditions to Alaska, 100 years apart, give us an unparalleled view of environmental damage and the change in society's attitudes.

A century ago, railroad tycoon Edward H. Harriman, one of the most powerful men in America, decided to take a little vacation-in the form of one of the most ambitious scientific expeditions the world had ever seen.

He invited the top authorities in the country: geologists, botanists, foresters, ornithologists, paleontologists, zoologists, painters, photographers, writers-at least two of each, like a private Noah's Ark of knowledge-to join him on a 9000-mile exploration of the coast of Alaska. Many were famous -- John Muir, John Burroughs, and George Bird Grinnell -- and a few were still obscure-the young painter Louis Agassiz Fuertes and the unknown photographer Edward Curtis. For many of these brilliant men, the journey would alter their destiny.

Over a century later, Thomas Litwin of Smith College organized an expedition to follow the path of the original one. Again, it was stocked with a constellation of scientific brilliance, though this time they were both men and women. It was called the Harriman Expedition Retraced, and its purpose was simple: to go to exactly the same places and see what the effects of the 20th century had wrought on Alaska. "What we are doing," said historian William Cronon, "is seeing this landscape at two moments in time. We're seeing it through that expedition in 1899 and seeing it at the beginning of the 21st Century and we're asking, "What's the change? What are the dynamics of history that have brought us here, and what do they tell us about where we are headed?"

The film uses both expeditions as a vehicle for understanding subtle as well as dramatic changes in Alaska's environment, economy, and society. While thoroughly researching very specific and specialized issues that surface in Alaska's history-such as the Exxon- Valdez oil spill, the separation of kinfolk during the Cold War, the prosperity of Alaskan natives, and the repatriation of indigenous artifacts-the film also addresses the boom and bust of industry, global warming, endangered species, the state of natural resources, and the influx of tourism to the pristine edges of the world.

    Reviews
  • "A cinematic tour de force that no one should miss." - William Cronon, University of Wisconsin- Madison

  • "Combines the best qualities of historical documentary, nature film, and investigative reporting on the modern-day environmental and social challenges faced by the people and ecosystems of coastal Alaska. Offering magnificent photography and compelling stories...it is a cinematic tour de force that no one should miss." - William Cronon, Frederick Jackson Turner Professor of History, Geography, & Environmental Studies, University of Wisconsin- Madison

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film, which masterfully catches the spirit of the original Harriman expedition...The photography is superb as is the assembly of the film." - Vera Alexander, School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, University of Alaska Fairbanks

  • "It's rare that a documentary film can encompass nearly all of environmental history and ethics in a mere two hours...The history of Alaska, since its purchase by the United States, provides a locus for examining nearly all the environmental issues facing the world today, from oil spills to overfishing, from deforestration to destruction of habitat. Too much for the viewer to handle? No way...It's a fast-paced voyage, full of wry jokes, lovely music, and wonderful wildlife." - David Tebaldi, Executive Director, Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities

  • "A vivid demonstration of how the past can illuminate the present and future. By recreating the Harriman Alaska Expedition, the film shows the environment -- and human attitudes toward it -- changing over the course of a century...The film is beautifully shot and sharply written and edited. This is engaged historical and environmental filmmaking at its best." - Stephen Fox, author of JOHN MUIR AND HIS LEGACY

  • "The thing that most impresses me...is the willingness to tackle thorny, sensitive, and complex issues about Alaska...such...as clearcut logging by Native corporations -- an especially divisive conflict...No preaching. No sensationalizing. Just clear-thinking presentation of modern problems and their historical roots, engagingly addressed by people of conscience with a personal stake in differing solutions. What a treat! It engendered much discussion in our small group, and I feel sure it will do the same in living rooms, classrooms, and conference rooms across America and beyond." - Kesler Woodward, Professor of Art Emeritus, University of Alaska

  • "An excellent teaching tool for many age levels. The film offers teachers an opportunity for exciting, in-depth interdisciplinary work in the sciences, economics, language arts, cultural studies, ecology, history, geography, the arts, etc. Educators will be thrilled with this exquisite documentation of a slice of America over one century." - Doris J. Shallcross, Professor Emeritus, University of Massachusetts/Amherst

  • "This film exemplifies the best aspects of thoughtful inquiry: first-hand exploration, insightful engagement of history, and the construction of a narrative that raises as many important questions as it answers." - Carol T. Christ, President, Smith College

  • "Larry Hott ranks with the best documentary film makers today...especially when it comes to films about the environment. The Harriman Alaska Expedition Retraced has all the elements of a great Hott documentary: a compelling and swift-moving narrative that places contemporary Alaska in the context of history; humor and humanity, and stunning footage of the Alaskan wilderness." - Tom Lewis, author of "Divided Highways", Professor of English at Skidmore University

  • "Well received and praised by over 100 Arctic enthusiasts, allowing them to use the film as a tool of understanding the North, our connection to the Arctic region, and respect for all living inhabitants of the fragile, yet dynamic environment." - Scott Pollock, Program Director, Arctic Film Festival Program, North House Folk School

  • "Beautifully presented, thoughtful and well organized, this documentary presents both an interesting, historical event in wonderful detail and examines the impact of industry and tourism upon the history, environment, wildlife, and native cultures of Alaska...appropriate for all grade levels in the areas of environmental sciences, natural sciences, sociology, visual arts, and anthropology." - Social Sciences Post Secondary, 2003 NAMTC/NMM Curriculum Media Reviews

    Reviews
  • "This video...brings thoughtfulness and humor, down-to-earth practicality and visionary hopes to the work of recovery. If you are in the early stages of wanting to live differently, watch ESCAPE FROM AFFLUENZA. You'll find you have company, and you'll have an idea what to do next." - Earthlight

  • "It is notable that both films are upbeat (even while introducing lots of worrisome information) because of their light touch, and the way they introduce us to lots of people who are making many changes in their lives. They avoid a grim this-is-the-only-way-to-live legalism." - Quaker Life
