JEANS - A FADED BLUE PLANET

From humble beginnings as durable clothing for workers in the mining towns of the Wild West, jeans have evolved into a cultural icon. The attire of a cowboy, a hero, a rock star and an ex-convict, jeans have played a part in antiestablishment movements and mainstream fashion alike. Changes in rivet, stitch and pocket placement trace the history of jeans that collectors treasure and pay for handsomely. Traditional dyeing techniques and hand-made denim live on in a few workshops, primarily in Japan, dedicated to maintaining the highest quality of fabric and control of every step in the process of making tailored jeans. On the other end of the spectrum, even the fading of jeans to give them a worn look is done on an industrial scale. Through interviews with fashion designers, jean tailors, historians and aficionados, Jeans traces the dissemination of denim and its cultural myths from America to the rest of the world and the formation of a global industry. All in a quest to find the reason why jeans have been so successful.

SAVAGE LIFE IN FASHION, A

Percy Savage is a maverick. He has led an amazing life in and around the world of designer fashion and influenced the way the industry developed. A Savage Life In Fashion combines and explores the memories he has; the people he knows; the history made to reveal an intimate world of creative expression, societal change, personal failure, collective triumph and the history of an art synonymous with opulence, luxury and refinement.

A Savage Life in Fashion is about a man whose influence was everywhere but is unknown outside the industry. Raised in the Australian outback, Percy arrived in Paris in 1947; the year Christian Dior launched his New Look. He would later become a friend of the man who revived the glory of couture and inadvertently, provide the name for the most famous of Dior fragrances: Eau Sauvage. It was at the House of Lanvin that Percy was asked to start the first Propaganda department, as it was then called, eventually renaming it PR. During his years in Paris, Percy weaved himself into the Parisian fabric and counted among friends, Dior, Beaton, Cocteau and Maria Callas. Whilst in Paris he travelled the globe, promoting and exhorting designers, journalists, buyers and manufacturers. He introduced Yves Saint-Laurent to Dior and created the explosion that was Mary Quant. He was PR for Nina Ricci during its heyday before moving to England in the 1970s. Percy had been asked by the powers-that-be to put London on a par with Paris, which he did, albeit at his own expense.

A Savage Life in Fashion opens amidst the refined excitement of the Christian Dior 2004 Spring/Summer couture show. Placing Percy within the contemporaneous reality of haute couture is made all the more pertinent as the film looks back at a post-war, history of fashion, in particular Percy's career in Paris and the foundation of fashion as we recognise it today. This retrospection provides an insight into what makes fashion perennially fascinating and forever reflective, both positively and negatively, of whom, what and why we are.

A Savage Life in Fashion includes an array of stunning IMX and Super 8 footage, exclusive archive film and photography. The film is narrated by Joanna Lumley and features interviews with Mary Quant, Hubert de Givenchy and Yuki as well as other eminent designers, journalists, historians and executives, exploring the fundamental dynamics of a much-vaunted aesthetic. Ultimately, it is a story about a man who did as he pleased, to please those in a world transfixed by image, beauty and style.

FAIR TRADE IN ACTION: FASHION FIRM CASE STUDY

What is fair trade? How does it work in practice? What difference is it making to people in the developing world? This is the story of fair trade fashion company People Tree

SWEATSHOP LABOUR: The UK fashion business is worth over ¢G40 billion annually. But beneath the industry's glamorous facade, there's an inconvenient truth: most of the clothes are made in the developing world using sweatshop labour. People Tree set out to make a difference, by selling well-designed clothes produced in the developing world for a fair price. They're now selling through Top Shop and working with 50 producer groups in 15 different countries. UK turnover is ¢G1.5 million.

HAND-MADE: All People Tree's garments are hand-made. This means it is all much more labour intensive and slower than in factories. But that's the whole point: to create as much employment as possible. Care for the environment is also part of People Tree's plan. They use natural dyes and avoid toxic or synthetic raw materials. They use organic cotton which means not relying on harmful pesticides - but they're not totally organic yet.

BANGLADESH: One woman working on People Tree's clothes in Bangladesh does seem to be benefiting from fair trade. She tells how working on producing fair trade clothes has improved her life, brought her more money and freed her from being stuck at home. But fair trade isn't an easy option. People Tree has little money for advertising and marketing and every day is a struggle. Fair trade is still only a small fraction of the fashion business - can it ever go mainstream?
