    GLOBE TREKKER: PIRATES, GALLEONS AND TREASURE

    In this Globe Trekker history special, presenter Megan McCormick travels to Colombia, Panama, Florida, and The Bahamas, to learn about the galleons, treasure, and pirates of the Caribbean. She follows the route of 17th century Spanish galleons on their voyages to bring back gold from the New World, and discovers the stories and legends about the golden age of piracy and its treasures. We take a look at the treasure at stake and what still remains from that In 1492 Christopher Columbus quite literally put the Americas on the map. This milestone in history also sparked over 250 years of perilous treasure hunting and brutal competition with the English, the French, the Spanish, the Dutch and the Portuguese all vying for gold, silver and other riches. Galleons were sunk. Thousands were killed and up until the mid 1700s, it was the pirates who ruled Megan's journey begins in Panama and Colombia where she visits the the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) in Bogota a stashed with treasures from across the Americas, itas probably one Megan treks the most important gold museums in the world. She then explores the famous Camino Real mule trail and traces the route the Spanish took to transport gold from Peru to Panama City and Portobello on The Caribbean. In Cartagena she takes a tour of the forts and city walls built by the Spanish to protect their stolen gold, then takes a boat out to sea to visit the burial place of Sir Francis Drake who died here in 1596. Drake was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe a a national hero in England, he was known as ""El Dragon"" to Next stop is Port Royal in Jamaica where Megan meets some interesting characters with a tale or two to tell about the life of pirates: Captain Morgan, Mary Reid, and Anne Bonny.     GLOBE TREKKER: BOLIVIA

    Globe Trekker Ian Wright explores Bolivia, finding one of the poorest countries in South America is also one of the richest in culture and landscape.

    His journey begins on Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake where he visits the Island of the Sun, the legendary birthplace of the Incan Empire. En route to the capital La Paz, he stops off in Copacabana and witnesses the blessing of the cars a Christian ceremony with roots in Incan tradition. His travels then take him on to Sucre and Tarabuco before reaching the mining centre of Potosi and the salt flats of Uyuni. After spending the night at the Palacio de Sal, a hotel incredibly sculpted entirely from salt, he attends the Fiesta of San Miguel in Uncia. Returning to La Paz by bus he joins a group cycling to Coroico in the lush Yungas region.

    Ian's journey ends with a trek to Huayna Potosi, one of the spectacular Andean peaks that overlook the capital city.

    GLOBE TREKKER: CYPRUS & CRETE

    Globe Trekker K.T. Comer travels around the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Beginning her adventures in the southern resort of Ayia Napa, she checks out the beach party scene, before moving on to the ruins of Kourion to catch a midsummer's day festival in honor of the ancient Greek god Apollo.

    K.T. then travels to the island's most revered Greek Orthodox monastery at Kykkos, before heading to Nicosia, the world's last divided capital city, straddling the UN-patrolled buffer zone between Greek-dominated southern Cyprus and the breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. After meeting and listening to the inspirational Bicommunal Choir for Peace, equally made up of Greek and Turkish Cypriot singers, she ends her journey in Kyrenia on the northern coast.

    Meanwhile, Globe Trekker Adela Ucar Innerarity visits the Greek island of Crete to learn more about the island's World War II history and experience its stunning natural beauty along one of Europe's most popular walking trails, the E4.

    Her journey begins in Hania, a bustling harbor town with Venetian and Turkish architecture. Adela's visit coincides with the commemoration of the Battle of Crete of 1941. She meets with veterans of the war and retraces their experiences, from Maleme in the west where the battle began, through the rugged interior and over the towering White Mountains before reaching the southern coast at Hora Sfakion.

    From Hora Sfakion Adela follows the E4 trail, heading west to the idyllic fishing village of Loutro and Agia Roumelli. Rejoining the trail at Sougia, she visits the Byzantine ruins at Lissos before continuing on to Paleochora where she ends her journey on the stunning Elafonisi beach.

    Colombia is the only country in South America that borders both the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. Panama to its North shares the same distinction as well as being the narrowest country in Central America.

    Globe Trekker Megan McCormick visits Colombia and Panama, countries that are still refreshingly untouched by mass tourism. Her first stop is Panama's lively capital, Panama City, where she takes in the sights, samples street food and shops for a Panama hat. She then ventures outside the city to the famous Panama Canal which links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and plays a crucial part in the Panamanian economy.

    Megan's next stop is the Comarca of Kuna Yala in the San Blas archipelago, a semi autonomous region belonging to one of Panama's main indigenous groups, the Kuna. Her journey continues in Colombia's capital Bogota where she explores the country's violent past and connection to the cocaine trade.

    From Bogota she travels to the beautiful and historic city of Cartagena, taking in the colonial charm and enjoying Vallenato, one of Colombia's most popular rhythms. The last leg of her journey begins in the town of Santa Marta where she treks into the jungle with archaeologist Santiago Giraldo to find the Lost City of The Tayrona, perched high on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

    GLOBE TREKKER: VENEZUELA

    Globe Trekker Ian Wright travels to Venezuela, the country where Christopher Columbus first set foot on South American soil. His journey begins in the state of Merida located high in the Andes, home to the country's 5 highest peaks it is known as the roof top of Venezuela.

    He then heads south by bus to Hato Pinero, a 500 square mile ranch situated in the flat grasslands that cover almost a third of the country. The region is inhabited by the Llaneros, some of the toughest cowboys on the planet as well as an abundance of wildlife including, crocodiles, piranhas and the infamous anaconda.

    Leaving the wilds of Hato Pinero, Ian travels to Caracas, the nation's capital and home to a quarter of the country's population. He meets up with the reigning Miss Venezuela and learns about the city's famed beauty schools that have groomed a record number of Miss Worlds and Miss Universes. His next destination is Los Roques, an archipelago of 300 sun-kissed islands, coral reefs and sand bars that was designated a national park in 1972.

    The final leg of Ian's journey takes him south to Gran Sabana, Venezuela's lush rainforest region also known as the Lost World because of its strange pre-historic landscapes. He embarks on a 3 day trip down river from Kamorata through the rapids of Devil's Canyon ending his journey with a trek to Angel Falls, the world's tallest waterfall measuring over 1,000 meters.

The next leg of the journey takes him to Matanzas Province, the site of the American invasion of the Bay of Pigs and then on to Camaguey, Cuba's cowboy country. Ian ends his visit to Cuba with a climb to the top of the Gran Piedra to take in the view of his next destination, Haiti's capital Port au Prince. After a short visit to Port au Prince Ian heads to Jacmel in time for the annual Carnival, known for its traditional papier mache masks and lively ra ra bands. Next he visits Haiti's holiest city, Souvenance, where he attends a traditional voodoo ceremony. The journey ends at the imposing Citadelle Laferriere, the largest fort in the Western Hemisphere and a UNESCO World Heritage site located just outside of Cap Haitien.
