ELLORA CAVE TEMPLES, THE - FAITH, RELIGION & ART

Among the many wonders of the world is the phenomenon of cutting through sheer, solid, natural rock and creating remarkable artistic structures and sculptures. The Ellora Cave Temples in Maharashtra are among the most exciting examples of human craftsmanship on natural formations. They are among the earliest Buddhist cave temples in the world. Ellora is located nearly thirty kilometres away from the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra. The caves were excavated and carved out of the vertical, basalt face of the Charanandri hills. These basalt rocks are ideal material for the kind of architecture and craftsmanship that the Ellora represents, enabling the craftsmen to express their vision and art on rock as a permanent memorial. Besides support from traders and merchants, Ellora also received royal patronage. The star attraction of Ellora is undoubtedly Cave #16 - The Kailash Temple. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, but pays homage to other gods as well. There are columned galleries three-storeys high, large sculpted panels and alcoves containing enormous sculptures. The Kailash temple represents many significant dimensions. It is the worlds largest monolithic structure - a classic and unrivalled example of rock-cut architecture and intricate sculpture. It represents a liberating visit to the icy reaches of Mount Kailash itself, the abode of Lord Shiva. Standing within these walls, it is difficult to ignore the tremendous spiritual energy that characterized its creation, and preserved it through the warp and weft of unfolding centuries, making it one of the oldest wonders of our modern world. This program intricately traces the history and development of various religious cultures and their evolution over several hundred years.

SOUTHERN CROSS, THE - THE STORY OF THE CONFEDERACYS FIRST BATTLEFLAG

This production chronicles the history of the design and creation of a flag that became the prototype for all of the St. Andrews Cross battle flags carried by Confederate armed forces. The hand-stitched silk flag with gold painted stars was borne by the Fifth Company of the Washington Artillery of New Orleans through the Battles of Shiloh and Perryville. Johnston approved Ms. Joness flag, sewing circles of more than four hundred women in Richmond sewed 120 flags made from Ms. Joness original design. UNSUNG HERO - THE HORSE IN THE CIVIL WAR

Presents the story of the millions of horses (and mules) that were used in all branches of both armies during the Civil War. It discusses how the horses were procured and trained for field use, how they were fed and maintained, and the toll taken on them due to service in the field. Millions of horses were utilized by the armies in all theaters of war. In large armies, anywhere from forty to sixty thousand horses (and mules) were used in the infantry, cavalry, artillery and quartermaster services. Regularly feeding, shoeing and maintaining the horses and mules was a near impossible task. As a result, thousands of horses were lost due to incapacity and malnutrition. Thousands more were lost on battlefields. Memoirs of soldiers are read, telling the stories of the horses they recalled and the incredible sacrifices of them. In the end, more than 1,500,000 horses (and mules) died during the War. Some of the War's most famous horses Cincinnati, Winchester, Old Baldy, Highfly, Little Sorrell, and Traveller, to name a few, are highlighted. The stories of each of them touched the heart. Hundreds of magnificent period photographs, drawings, illustrations, along with selected re-enactment scenes are employed to graphically illustrate the role of the horse. Filming of action scenes took place at the re-enactments of the battles of Richmond and Perryville in Kentucky, as well as Shaker Village at South Union, Kentucky and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

UTTARAMERUR - THE KAILASANATHA TEMPLE

The village of Uttaramerur is an ancient realm rich with history. It was established by the Pallava king Nandivarman II around 750 A.D. to accommodate experts in the four Vedas. It soon grew into a centre of learning and came to be recognized as a meticulously planned, well-administered village. It was planned and laid out according to the Agama prescription with the village hall in the centre - a lasting example of architectural acumen and achievement. The village has a number of strategically located temples, most of them bequeathed from ancient history. Among them, the formidable Kailasanatha temple dedicated to Lord Siva, is unique because its walls tell us the 1300-year old story of Uttaramerur village. These inscriptions include details of life and administration in the village and hundreds of epigraphs. The Kailasanatha Temple - Built with bricks on a stone foundation, the temple fell into neglect in later years. An enormous tree standing nearby sent its roots surging into the foundations of the temple. Though the temple stood firm, its masonry developed a large crack. After more than a thousand years, the temple was finally showing signs of wear and tear, mainly due to neglect and lack of maintenance. This program traces the process of restoration of this ancient Indian temple from a state of dilapidation to its former glory. Its aim is to restore the Kailasanatha temple using traditional material to take it back to its former glory, preserving not only its historical and cultural richness but also showcasing to the world the architectural and scientific expertise of an ancient civilization.
