MOST POPULAR TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF FRANCE, THE: THE EIFFEL TOWER

By Jacques Vichet

The Eiffel Tower has greeted since its creation nearly 250 million people, becoming the first visited paid monument in the world with over 7 million tourists a year. It was built by Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exhibition of 1889. For over forty years, it remained the tallest in the world. Symbol of Paris and France, it is unavoidable and we meet all those who work and who watch over it with admiring eyes. Versailles Palace is more than a monument. It has been built gradually, according to the wishes of all the kings of France, from mid seventeenth century until the Revolution of 1789. A model for all of Europe, both for its beauty and its history, it is a reflection of classical art including architecture and sculpture. It will give birth to the famous "French gardens" with its labyrinths. Stretched out on 800 hectares, the area of Versailles was the heart and home of the French monarchy in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Heritage and history merge. Today, Versailles is still home to numerous cultural events.

MOST POPULAR TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF FRANCE, THE: THE MONT ST-MICHEL AND NOTRE DAME

By Jacques Vichet

The Mont St-Michel in Normandy is a place of pilgrimage and tourism. The building was unique relics of medieval art, connecting the sky to land, nature to man. It includes its granite island and its bay. The very high tides in the region (more than ten meters) allow much of the bay to be discovered at low tide. The essential part of the rock is covered by the footprint of the abbey of Mont St-Michel and his area. It has become a world famous place for both its spiritual and symbolic size and its historic and architectural interest.

MOST POPULAR TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF FRANCE, THE: VERSAILLES PALACE - THE CHATEAU AND THE GARDENS

By Jacques Vichet

The Chateau of Versailles remains forever the emblematic symbol of Louis XIV, whose reign lasted for almost half a century. It is recognised as one of the most beautiful works of art of the 17th century France. In the beginning it was the site of a modest chateau built by Louis XIII as a hunting lodge. The site was then chosen by Louis XIV for the construction of the palace which stands there to this day, a symbol of royal absolutism and the incarnation of Classical French art. In the 1670s, Louis XIV built the Grand Apartments of the King and Queen, a luxurious, stately reception area. The most symbolic of the rooms is no doubt the Hall of Mirrors, designed by Mansart. During the next century, under the reign of Louis XV, the Chapel and the Opera were completed. The Chateau ceased to function as the seat of official power in 1789 with the French Revolution. The gardens at Versailles initiated the tradition of the typical ? French garden, ? complete with labyrinths, fountains and other decorative statements. The Orangery at the Chateau of Versailles was designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in the 17th century. Built between 1684 and 1686, before construction had even started on the Chateau itself, the Orangery is situated beneath the ( Parterre du Midi). It is made up of a central gallery of 155 metres in length, with a south-facing facade.

MOST POPULAR TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF FRANCE, THE: VERSAILLES PALACE - THE GRAND TRIANON, THE PETIT TRIANON AND MARIE - ANTOINETTE'S ESTATE

By Jacques Vichet

The Grand Trianon was designed by Jules Hardouin Mansart in 1687, on the site of the ? Porcelain Trianon ?, which had been constructed in 1670 under the orders of Louis XIV. He wanted to construct a private residence, where he could escape from the pomp and show of the court, and enjoy time with his mistress Mme de Montespan. Built in pink marble, whence the nick-name ? the Marble Trianon ?, the Grand Trianon is undoubtedly the most refined group of buildings within the Versailles Estate. The Petit Trianon was built under Louis XV, close to the Grand Trianon, in compliance with the demands of his favourite mistress: Madame de Pompadour. However, Madame de Pompadour, for whom the chateau was built, died on the 15th April 1764, without ever having seen the completed work. It was with his new favourite, Madame du Barry, that Louis XV inaugurated the Petit Trianon. Marie-Antoinette, the wife of Louis XVI, liked to go to this chateau, which had been given to her by the King, to seek out a more simple lifestyle, away from the formality of Versailles. The Queen's Hamlet, not far away, was made up of a dozen farm buildings, in the traditional Norman style. The hamlet gives us a glimpse of Marie Antoinette's true character. The Queen enjoyed coming here to milk the cows and goats, which were meticulously cared for.

In highland socitety, status is earned by giving things away rather than acquiring them, and a moka is the single -most important ceremony. Ongka's motives in planning his big moka are to gain influence over rivals and to win a sort of immortality for himself and his tirbe in a changing world. "I decided, well, if the old ways must go, let's at least do something as our last big show." But things don't go as planned, and Ongka's painstaking preprations are threatened by accusations of sorcery and even the threat of war.

    ECSTATIC CIRCLE: TURKEY

The Mevlevi Dervish Order was founded in the 13th century by Mevlana Jeladed-din Rumi, a poet and mystic who rebelled against orthodox Islamic beliefs by replacing formal prayers with songs and dances. The Dervish order was banned in Turkey in the early 20th century, but once a year the government allows the Whirling Dervish ceremony to take place at Konya in Anatolia where the religion was founded. This extraordinary occasion is shown as a sequenced presentation with more than sixty-five devotees spinning like tops in a ritualized pattern, ultimately achieving an experience leading to religious ecstasy.

    DISCOVERIES...IRELAND, MUSIC & DANCE, A RICH CULTURE

Irish traditions are celebrated with passion & energy in a land where music & dance is as much a part of the culture as shamrocks & leprecons. The pub lies at the heart of cultural, social & musical life in Ireland. Here you can contemplate the meaning of life, ruminate on politics, listen to a poetry reading, tap your feet to an impromptu session, feast on pub grub or just enjoy the quiet setting of a pint of Guinness in front of a warm fire. As early as the 10th Century B.C. there are documents referring to Irish music, which consisted mainly of the harp & small drums. Through the ages more instruments & styles became part of Irish music tradition. For many folks the only form of entertainment was what they could create for themselves. A group would gather in the kitchen (the usual gathering spot!) & using brooms, spoons, a piece of wood or skin drum & with their voices create lively entertainment of dancing, clogging & song. The residents of Raith Cairn Village in County Meath, one of the few remaining Irish language enclaves where people actually conduct their daily business in Irish, perform on stage to educate and keep the Gaelic traditions and native language alive. In Northwest Ireland, music festivals are everywhere! It's an extraordinary way to spend the summer moving from one festival to another with a stop in a pub for a pint & more music. This 5th episode of Discoveries...Ireland begins in Kilrush at Mrs Crotty's music festival then travels around the country to sample a wide variety of great Irish music & dance. From single players or small groups on the streets and cafes to scenic attractions like the Cliffs of Moher, to larger performances like Bru Boru who have given Irish traditional music, song & dance a whole new stature in the world of entertainment.

    DISCOVERIES...VIETNAM, HISTORIC TREASURES

Start at the most historic site, The Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first University founded in 1070, then head to Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi where you can find the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. From here travel to Unesco World Heritage Sites of Hoi Anh, a major international port in the 16th and 17th centuries, with foreign influences apparent to this day. Continue to My Son, with an extensive ruin from the Champa Dynasty built from the 4th to the 14th Century. Over 70 temples in various states of ruin make this a spectacular journey into Vietnam's past. Hue's Citadel on the north side of the Perfume River is often referred to as "ancient", but compared to My Son or The Temple of Literature is actually quite young historically. It was built in the early part of the 19th Century, 1804, and was the royal capitol of Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty until 1945. The former imperial seat of government and Hue's prime attraction, this is a great sprawling complex of temples, pavilions, moats, walls, gates, shops, museums and galleries. The Thien Mu Pagoda overlooks the Perfume River and is the official symbol of the city of Hue and was built in 1601 although the nearly 70 foot tower was built in1844. Throughout its history the pagoda has seen a number of activists pass thru it's gates on the way to influence many different governments over the last 400 years. There are several tombs of Nyugen emperors around Hue, the two most remarkable are Khai Dinh Tomb with it's classic formula of forecourts leading up to the tomb of the Emperor complete with incredibly detailed and opulent mosaics of cavorting dragons. Minh Mang, an regal complex with it's courtyard surrounded by warrior statues and several temples and pavilions.

A bright and witty young guide in Bac Ha gives a personal tour of rice fields where she grew up and to the remote mountain village of Can Cau for a weekly market. A unique experience since nearly everyone there belongs to one of the minority Mong tribes who are a remarkable contrast to their "Viet" countrymen. From the 10,000 foot mountains in the north, south to sea level in the Delta, this is another odyssey around and through Vietnam that will leave unforgettable images of a kind & smiling people in a country that is emerging as a real gem in the western Pacific.

    DISCOVERIES...IRELAND, CASTLES & HISTORIC TREASURES

This 4th program in the "Discoveries... Ireland" series explores many of this island's historic gems. There are so many heritage sites in Ireland that you'd probably need a lifetime just to scratch the surface of it's spectacular history. Ireland's turbulent past gave rise to many castles, abbeys, moats & fortified houses scattered throughout the country & truly paved the way for the island's optimistic present & future. From world heritage ruins & passage tombs like Knowth, Dowth & Newgrange all built around 3000 B.C. To the Hill of Tara which was the seat of high kings in Ireland. To Medieval ecclesiastical castles like the Rock of Cashel & defensive fortresses like James Fort & the star fort of Charles Fort. There are ancient remnants like Mollough, Knock Graffen & Hore Abbeys some of which may be out in the middle of a farmer's field, completely unguarded and open to anyone passing by to explore. There's Blarney Castle with its famous Stone of Eloquence, Trim Castle which is the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland and where the movie "Braveheart" was filmed, Dunluce Castle with it's spectacular perch on the cliffs of the North Antrim coast and also beautifully restored Kilkenny Castle. There are even castle hotels, some of which are owned by original families, that open their ancestral homes to the public by offering fine accommodations, restaurants, golf & other activities as in Waterford & Markree Castles.
