LETTERS FROM IRAN

(The voices in this film emerge despite state censorship and repression. Exceptional in a country living in fear, they tell the chronicle of a forbidden Iran.)

While winds of freedom blow through the Arab world, the Iranian youth waits. They were the first to rise up against their leaders in 2009. The first to tweet, Facebook and post YouTube updates, filming the fallout of their failed revolution on camera phones. Now, Iran has closed itself off to the Western press, making it difficult to get the inside story from the outside.

For the past two years, Manin Loiseau has been following a group of Iranians inside Iran. Many lost loved ones or were tortured themselves in the aftermath of the elections. Piecing together interviews, footage from hidden cameras, YouTube clips and more, she paints a vivid portrait of the aftermath of the Green Revolution.

LION WOMEN: THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM IN IRAN

With the Iranian revolution of 1979 came the harsh imposition of Sharia law and the repression, persecution, state-sanctioned discrimination and murder of women. Over the last 30 years, the women's fight for freedom and equality led to an inner awakening. In 2003, Shirin Ebadi became the first Muslim woman and the first Iranian citizen to receive the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize acknowledging her courageous efforts for democracy and human rights in Iran.

Her crowning achievement inspired Iranian women to begin what has become the most powerful movement for reform in Iran's history, the One Million Signature campaign. The bravery of these women is remarkable as they risk their lives to gain freedoms under one of the world's most repressive regimes. Lion Women chronicles the untold story of the Iranian Women's Movement and its fight for democracy and human rights.

The fight culminated in Teheran's bloody streets in 2009 when the Lion Women were joined by hundreds of thousands protesting the controversial presidential election. For the first time, Iranian women reveal to the world their heartbreaking stories in this powerful documentary directed by filmmaker Gry Winther, who stood shoulder to shoulder with the Lion Women in Teheran amid the brutality and violence.

MIDDLE EAST STUDIES, THE: IRAN - POPULATION CONTROL: THE KINDEST CUT

When the fundamentalist Mullahs seized power in Iran back in 1979 they urged the country to pro-create. They wanted lots of young revolutionaries, and they wanted them now. Now Iran has a massive population problem. From 34 million in 1979 to 73 million today, over 60% are under 25. Now the Mullahs, in a remarkable display of political pragmatism, have made a complete turn by instituting one of the world's most enlightened population control programs. Vasectomies are encouraged and condoms are distributed free. Even sex education classes of surprising candor are now compulsory for all couples about to get married. This program investigates a surprising development in deeply religious Iran, providing a fascinating look at the contrast between secular and traditional Iran.

FROM BABYLON TO BEVERLY HILLS: THE EXODUS OF IRAN'S JEWS

    By Tanaz Eshaghian

In 1979, the Islamic Revolution in Iran brought a twenty five hundred year history to a close for the Jews who left their homeland for America. Uncertain about their safety and fearing religious persecution in Khomeini's Islamic Theocracy, an estimated 80,000 of Iran's 100,000 Jews fled the country. This documentary tells the story of those Jews who reestablished a tight knit community in Los Angeles.

Iranian Jewish families and young adults take us through a journey into their past and present lives in the United States. The families retell how and why they left Iran, their struggles as Jews while in Iran, how they escaped by land across the Iranian border and how they have tenaciously tried to hold on to their heritage in the United States. We experience the difficulties young adults face being raised in traditional Iranian Jewish homes in America today.

Historical background via the use of archival footage gives a detailed overview of the original Jewish settlement in Iran and their relationship with their adopted country as well as how they fared in the 20th century.

In the American cultural imagination, Iranians are represented by scenes of hard-line religious leaders and unruly crowds crying "Down With America". Very little is known about the religious diversity of Iranians living in America. This documentary will shed some light on and help to create a more nuanced view of the culture and religious diversity of Iranians both inside and outside the country.

IRAN: ADRIFT IN A SEA OF BLOOD

    By Ron Hallis

In the context of the war with Iraq, this documentary looks at the manifestations of Islamic fundamentalism on Iran.

To many in the west, the Iranian struggle is irrational and tragic, even perverse. This film allows Iranian peasants, clergy, and government officials to explain their uncompromising adherence to Islam. They justify martyrdom and the sacrifice of youth in the name of God and politics as being part of the unavoidable defense of their religion and spiritual dignity.

IRAN: ADRIFT IN A SEA OF BLOOD presents the Iranian people's vision - one not readily seen in the west - clearly, precisely, and compellingly.

IRAN AND THE CHALLENGE OF REFORM

    Director: Jamshid Golmakani

This film attempts to analyze the complex climate of the current Iranian Political system and questions the compatibility of an Islamic State with freedom and democracy. In 1997, Mohammad Khatami, runs as a moderate candidate for reform and gets elected the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His election marks almost two decades of struggle by the Iranian people to loosen the iron grip that the regime had on every aspect of their lives.

President Khatami promises to bring about some measures of freedom, therefore fueling the hopes of many, inside and outside of the country. The film reviews his eight years of Lame Duck presidency. His struggle with the growing public pressure and anger, for him to fulfill his campaign promises, on one side and the all powerful Supreme spiritual leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on another.

Khatami's inability to reckon with the powerful political forces opposing him in Tehran and in essence, rendering him ineffective. Khatami visits to France and Germany, during which, many of current regime's opponents protested against the Western European governments' support for him. The film presents rare footage of Shirin Ebadi, a female Iranian Lawyer who receives the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2003. The Iranian freedom seekers view this as a positive step by an International body in recognition of their struggle.

This documentary further reveals the lack of a democratic political process within the country and the inability of people to bring about changes through peaceful means and struggle, a direct result of decades of oppressive and authoritarian rein.
