AGUSTIN'S NEWSPAPER

By Ignacio Aguero

AGUSTIN'S NEWSPAPER follows journalism students from the University of Chile as they launch an investigation into the work of the newspaper, and its reporting of and role in their country's political history, in particular around the election of Salvador Allende in 1970, the violent coup against him in 1973, and the subsequent seventeen years of the military regime.

AGUSTIN'S NEWSPAPER features archival footage, interviews with former editors, journalists and other staff members at El Mercurio, Pinochet's political advisor and press secretary, relatives of political dissidents who were "disappeared," as well as John Dinges, former Washington Post correspondent in Santiago.

Together, the students and the film dig into the particulars of several key events and their coverage in El Mercurio. They also looks into relations between the owners and managers of the newspaper and Chilean political parties, the church, military, secret police, and the CIA.

In the end, through its attention to the details of one country's journalistic history, AGUSTIN'S NEWSPAPER raises profound questions not only about the role and responsibilities of Chile's most important newspaper, but of all those who control or manage the dissemination of information and the reporting of news in every country.

Review
  • "A groundbreaking documentary because it is the first to investigate the role and influence of this powerful newspaper... The investigative work and research that was done for this film presents an impressive array of primary sources. This is an important exposition on power and corruption in the media and the tragic human rights violations of thousands of Chileans. Recommended." -Karen Coronado, George Fox University, Educational Media Reviews Online

    PAPER, THE

    Directed by Aaron Matthews

By chronicling for a year the publication of Penn State University's Daily Collegian - one of the nation's leading student newspapers, with a 200-person staff and a circulation rivaling that of many small-town newspapers - this documentary reveals the many challenges and issues with which young journalists must contend.

These range from ethical considerations, sensitizing reporters and editors to diversity issues, and dealing with circulation woes, to struggling for access to news sources and, above all, trying to determine whether they should be informing or entertaining their readers. Utilizing a cinema-verite style, THE PAPER follows the editors and reporters of The Daily Collegian through their everyday routines, sits in on editorial meetings, follows reporters as they cover stories, attends classroom sessions where new reporters are trained, and interviews staff members about their particular frustrations and disappointments.

Interweaving the drama of pressure-cooker journalism with the energy and idealism of young people, THE PAPER explores the media from the fresh perspective of tomorrow's journalists. But the young reporters' dilemmas and decisions raise complicated questions about the role of the press in society. Do you lure readers by entertaining them or offering hard news? How can the media deliver the news when obstructed by wary public officials and misleading public relations campaigns? What is the media's responsibility to serve the public interest in all its diversity?

    DEMOCRACY ON DEADLINE

    By Calvin Skaggs

If, as the saying goes, information is power, then journalists can be seen as watchdogs of our government leaders and custodians of the public good, providing truthful information to help citizens build or preserve democratic societies. DEMOCRACY ON DEADLINE is a comprehensive look at journalists worldwide, working in different media and various languages, as they attempt to speak truth to power.

Filmed in the United States and countries throughout Africa, Asia, Central America, Europe and the Middle East, DEMOCRACY ON DEADLINE profiles international journalists as they cover local and international events, and in the process enables them to discuss their sense of vocation, the need to defend journalistic principles against commercial pressures, how they deal with censorship or government constraints, as well as dangerous and even life-threatening conditions.

Among the many journalists featured are those at Radio SKY in Sierra Leone as they cover an election in a country where more people listen to radio than read newspapers; Moscow journalists (including Anna Politkovskaya, assassinated in October 2006) who discuss government control of the media and covering the Chechen War; the publisher, editors and journalists at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz who explain why they feel it is important, especially for a readership too often concerned only with its own agony, to document the violence directed against Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank; and several U.S. journalists who discuss how the press failed in its reporting of the Bush Administration's misuse of intelligence on the lead-up to the Iraq War.

In an era when mainstream journalism, especially in the U.S., is being steadily eroded by political manipulation, commercial constraints, and circulation and ratings pressures, DEMOCRACY ON DEADLINE is an important reminder of the crucial political value of an independent news media in any democratic society.

    LOOKING FOR AN ICON

By Hans Pool & Maaik Krijgsman

Every year for the last fifty years, a professional jury of the World Press Photo Foundation has selected one photograph as winner of the "World Press Photo of the Year" competition. Some of these images have had such an impact on society that they have become symbols of their time - true historical icons.

LOOKING FOR AN ICON examines the process by which photos become icons, revealing that once a photo is published, social forces are at work beyond the photographer's control. The film focuses on four World Press Photo winners, including Eddie Adams's 1968 photo of the public execution of a Viet Cong prisoner, an anonymous photographer's last image of Salvador Allende during the 1973 coup, Charlie Cole's 1989 photo of a lone student confronting tanks in Tiananmen Square, and David Turnley's 1991 photo of a grieving soldier during the first Gulf War.

The film details the story behind each of those world-famous images, featuring interviews with the photographers, and showing additional images from the contact sheets. LOOKING FOR AN ICON also features interviews with other photographers, photo editors, critics, educators, historians and members of the World Press Photo jury.

The commentary by these photojournalists and other professionals offer insights into the social process by which a photo becomes iconic, the visual motifs they illustrate, the public's voyeuristic fascination with horrific images, and how such images shape historical memory.

    PLAYING THE NEWS

By Jeff Plunkett & Jigar Mehta

In November 2004, media from around the world covered the U.S.-led attack on the Iraqi "terrorist stronghold" of Fallujah. So did the video game, Kuma War, whose realistic simulation of the event was designed as an "intense, boots-on-the-ground experience" for video gamers. Young people don't watch TV news or read newspapers, explains Kuma Reality Games CEO Keith Halper, but they play hour after hour of video games, so why not convey war reports to them through their recreational activities?

PLAYING THE NEWS profiles the first video game company to consider itself a legitimate news organization, taking us from the company's Manhattan offices, equipped with satellite technology, to the frontlines of the war in Iraq. The documentary features interviews with Kuma executives and designers, a media studies professor, a New Technology writer for The Economist, a war correspondent, and several video gamers, who download new episodes monthly and who can play separately or link up online with others to play as a squad.

Can such video games play a serious journalistic role or do they misconstrue the real nature of war for voyeuristic thrills? Do they represent the future of journalism or the dangerous blurring of news and entertainment? Can we look forward to an Abu Ghraib video game?

PLAYING THE NEWS is a provocative examination of whether video games are a revolutionary new way to engage young people in current events or an unethical marketing gimmick that merely seeks to exploit war.

    Reviews
  • "Does a fine job of exploring the ability (and inability) of a game to help viewers to really experience the war." - David T. Z. Mindich, Journalism History

  • ""By presenting arguments for and against the game, filmmakers Plunkett and Mehta have created a documentary that would be a useful trigger for discussion about the nature of video games, the evolution of journalism and entertainment, and the ethics of turning an existing conflict into a vehicle for entertainment. This provocative film is recommended for public and academic libraries." - Library Journal

  • "A provocative, balanced, and thought-provoking film...raises critical questions." - Leonardo Digital Reviews

  • "An excellent teaching tool... Highly recommended for academic and public libraries." - Educational Media Reviews Online

BROADCAST REPORTING: HOW DO YOU FEEL?

An enlightening view ideal for classes in reporting, producing and media ethics. The media seem to be obsessed with broadcasting or printing grief, and the question, "how do you feel" is one that all reporters have to ask, but often hate to ask. Because they are the ones assigned to seek the reactions of grieving friends and family members in stories related to victims of tragedy, reporters are often mocked and criticized. This program turns the tables and asks reporters how THEY feel about having to ask "the question".

    LOBBY, THE

    By Benny Brunner

How powerful is the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)? The new documentary film THE LOBBY is a balanced examination of this controversial subject.

Considering the pro-Israeli attitude of every recent U.S. administration, it is often suggested that the Jewish lobby dictates Washington's Middle East policy. AIPAC does make and break the careers of politicians, like the NRA and the former Christian Coalition. But does this organization really have a major influence on U.S. foreign policy?

In THE LOBBY people from varying backgrounds, with diverse political attitudes give their opinion on this matter. Some of those interviewed include:

  • Steven Grossman - former president of AIPAC

  • Malcolm Hoenlein - Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations representative

  • Denise Majette - Georgia congresswoman

  • J.J. Goldberg - Jewish weekly Forward editor

  • Janet McMahon - Washington Report editor

  • Noam Chomsky - MIT professor

The opinions of these and the other interviewees form a rounded, rational and unemotional conversation about an often-avoided subject.

    Review
  • "RECOMMENDED. THE LOBBY provides an evaluation of one of the more successful interest groups in American politics, and also addresses the foreign policy influence of the broader Jewish community. In addition, the film demonstrates the importance of money within the U.S. political process... Several interviewees compare the AIPAC with the National Rifle Association, placing the film's critique in the broader context of the power and influence exerted by single-issue interest groups. THE LOBBY is a balanced critique of the U.S.'s pro-Israeli stance, and a useful in-class discussion tool." - Educational Media Reviews Online

    AL JAZEERA: VOICE OF ARABIA

    By Tewfik Hakem

Founded in 1996, Al Jazeera ("The Island" in Arabic) was the first 24-hour news channel in the Arab world. Little known in the U.S. until September 11th, the notoriety of this "Arab CNN" has exploded since then, and has grown during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Shot on location in Doha, Qatar, AL JAZEERA takes us behind the scenes of the Arab world's independent satellite TV channel. With a multi-national staff of seventy journalists and numerous international correspondents, Al Jazeera embodies the idea of a unified Pan-Arab world.

The film explores the paradoxes that emerge between the apparent orthodoxy of Arab societies, and the journalistic freedom flaunted by Al Jazeera. The station's philosophy of open debate is not easily embraced in what Faycal Al-Quassam, the host of The Opposite Direction, calls "a dictatorial, single-party culture which does not know the meaning of dialogue." An excerpt from his program in which a former Algerian Prime Minister storms off the set, condemning Al Jazeera as, "a place of folklore and lies", illustrates the conflict.

Al Jazeera's impact extends far beyond the Arab world. In Afghanistan when Al Jazeera correspondent Youssef Al-Chouli's exclusive stories from Kandahar show the impact of U.S. bombing on Afghani civilians, Washington correspondent Hafez Al-Mirazi questions Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld about them. He interviews National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice, who states her support for Al Jazeera - but one month later, when their Kabul office is bombed, some journalists can only respond with suspicion.

Combining news footage, excepts from various Al Jazeera programs, and interviews with executives, anchors, and journalists (from Yousri Fouda, trying to uncover stories on the Guantanamo detention camp, to the first Arab female sports reporter, Leila Smati), AL JAZEERA is an invaluable look at the challenges faced and issues raised by the most important television channel in the Arab world.

    Reviews
  • "Brilliant! It is clear that Al Jazeera has sparked a revolution in the world of Arab media, and [this documentary] has brilliantly shown us how." - Al Jadid, A Review & Record of Arab Culture and Arts

  • "Covers same of the same issues but delves into topics that 'Control Room' never bothers to raise...doles out fascinating details about staffers' cultural backgrounds, unveils surprisingly 'Western' pressures on anchorwomen to dress and act like starlets, and addresses the tricky negotiations involved in keeping Islamic religious interests at bay." - Cineaste

  • "Recommended... a rare view of one of the most popular and often controversial satellite television organizations in the Middle East [and] a valuable resource for a Western world eager to learn more about Middle Eastern ideas." - Educational Media Reviews Online

  • "Watchable and informative... Hakem's low-key but eye opening documentary rewards the viewer with perhaps more insight into the forces and mindsets shaping the Muslim world than any number of retreaded policy papers. Al Jazeera is arguably the most important media outlet in the Arab world, and it is well worth any hour of any TV viewer's time to learn about it from Hakem." - Bridges, An Interdisciplinary Journal

CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: ARAB-AMERICANS IN WARTIME

Directed by David Van Taylor & Brad Lichtenstein

Before September 11 2001, New York City's Arab population was one among many immigrant groups making their way in the city: politically diverse; assimilated and separatist; Muslim, Christian, and fundamentalist; wealthy and working class; struggling and successful. But when two planes hijacked by Islamic extremists destroyed the World Trade Center, the lives of this immigrant group changed within hours.

Now, Arab-Americans are caught in the crossfire of President Bush's War on Terrorism, and are finding out how cold the welcome can be when you belong to the wrong immigrant group at the wrong time.

Centered in New York City, CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE puts viewers in the shoes of three individuals, each of whom has had a particularly tricky road to navigate in recent months.

Raghida Dergham is a high-level diplomatic correspondent for the leading independent Arabic newspaper and a regular pundit on CNN. While America has given her the opportunity to be an independent, successful woman, this cosmopolitan insider sometimes feels like a woman without a country. She can't return to Lebanon, her homeland, where she is under indictment for treason, and her reporting of Middle East perspectives regularly earns her hate mail from Americans as well.

Khader El-Yateem is an outsider among outsiders - an Arab Christian. But since September 11th, his Salam Arabic Lutheran Church has become a haven for Brooklyn Arabs, Christian and Muslim alike. All the while, the minister is carrying his own burden. Each day he phones home to Palestine to talk to his family as he watches Israeli forces bombard their village on TV.

As a child in Yemen, Ahmed Nasser watched American cop shows and decided he wanted to be "one of the good guys." He was stationed at Ground Zero in the days after 9/11 and felt the full impact of terrorism on New York. But in the same period, he also saw his fellow officers ignore or minimize calls for help from harassed Arab-Americans in his precinct.

Like many immigrants, Arab-Americans are torn between their adopted country and their homeland, between modern American culture and ancient traditions. Now, as they wrestle with their place in wartime America, CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE gives voice to a three people whose stories we need to hear.

  • "In its acute eye and ear for quotidian detail, and in its compassion for innocents, the film proves undeniably affecting." - New York Times

  • "A rare glimpse into a previously invisible - and often in question - community. - Newsweek

  • "Recommended. [The] mosaic of episodes... carry considerable punch, effectively capturing the tension between devotion to one's native culture and loyalty to the adopted country... The film's starkness adds to its power, while its timeliness - as America continues to align itself against predominantly Arab nations- cannot be overstated." - Video Librarian

  • "Brilliant... no one who watches will be able to see Arab or American identity in simple black-and-white terms [again]. Officer Nasser's final words in the film are among the most eloquent and resonant in all the [9/11 anniversary] programs." - Baltimore Sun

  • "Invites us to see Arab and Muslim immigrants in the U.S. as individuals, not as a fifth column of Al Queda sympathizers. Its human interest story bursts the stereotype of the dangerous Arab in our midst." - Al Jadid, A Review & Record of Arab Culture and Arts

  • "Recommended! Through straightforward film footage and interviews we are able to gain profound insight into the struggles of Arab-Americans. The film clippings intelligently and creatively alternate among the three characters. As long as we continue to reel from the events of September 11, [this film] will be a priority acquisition and a first choice for initiating sensible discussion on the topic." - Educational Media Reviews Online

    OTHER AMERICAN VOICES

By Corinna Belz and Neil Hollander

OTHER AMERICAN VOICES captures the change in the political mood in the United States after the attack of September 11, 2001.

It seems that the whole country has rallied around George W. Bush. But what has become of the various strands of opposition in the United States, that checkered mix of intellectuals, activists, artists, unions and NGOs, which, prior to the attack, leveled vehement criticism at the Bush Administration's domestic and foreign policies?

Interviews with Noam Chomsky, Richard Deats, Katrina van den Heuvel (editor-in-chief of The Nation), Amy Goodman of Democracy Now, Asif Ulla (spokesman for the War Resisters League) and others create a portrait of a country - with its proud tradition of dissent - that cannot seem to tolerate any critique of the U.S. response to the attack.

The fear of a new McCarthy era runs through the conversations, triggered by the growing volume of legislation, such as the "Patriot Act," which undermines fundamental rights and civil liberties. The "war against terror" is being pursued in the name of the liberty, yet ultimately also seems to threaten liberty itself.

    Reviews
  • "As a US citizen I believe OTHER AMERICAN VOICES is a tremendous contribution to social history and the political discourse as well. As a writer on topics relating to art, science, and technology, this tape reminded me of the close links between art and politics. [The] tension between the need to ask questions and the script's focus on a particular point of view that allows the tape to fulfill a function often associated with art: stirring our emotions and presenting complex points of view in a way that allows us to wrestle with a larger picture. In this case, given the current mood in the States, Belz and Hollander do us a service in bringing together views that are being drowned elsewhere. Thus this video accentuates what art can do and why, I believe, political statements by artists are increasingly important in our world today.

  • "OTHER AMERICAN VOICES captures the shock of the World Trade Center attack, the humanity of those who cleared the rubble, and the voices of some who understand that liberty and freedom only exist when people speak out. It is a tape that is important today in light of the move to stifle critics. It should be shown in high school and college classroom. Years from now, moreover, this kind of documentation will provide future generations with the words of those who saw other paths were available. America prides itself on its tradition of dissent and, from this perspective, this film's criticism of the domestic and foreign policies of George W. Bush celebrate this nation's identity." - Amy Ione, The Diatrope Institute, for Leonardo Digital Reviews

  • "Highly Recommended! If you believe that democracy flourishes only when all points of view are freely expressed, then OTHER AMERICAN VOICES provides a much-needed response from the liberal and dissident side of the spectrum of American political discourse to the conservative and mainstream ideology that has dominated the media and the political process in the aftermath of the attacks of September 11, 2001. The technical quality of the program is excellent. The material is very current [and] is appropriate for all age groups over Junior High school level and, by providing a perspective that is not generally represented in the mainstream media, would be useful in presenting information directly or in eliciting class discussion." - Educational Media Reviews Online

  • "The combination of intelligent interviews and quiet moments merges into a thoughtful documentary on contemporary U.S. politics... [The film's participants] are patriotic to American ideals and fundamentals of the Constitution. The ability to dissent, and to check and challenge government power, fall within the Jeffersonian tradition and is the highest form of patriotism." - Pop Politics

  • "Recommended. The interviews took place before the war in Iraq, but the issues they raise still resonate, specifically the perception of the United States as becoming less hospitable to dissent and opposing viewpoints. The footage of Ground Zero includes many views of the cleanup project that did not get any major media coverage and are somber and stark rather than graphic and sensational." - Library Journal

SEEING IS BELIEVING: HANDICAMS, HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE NEWS

By Katerina Cizek & Peter Wintonick

It may be the greatest media technology paradigm shift since TV's advent. From Rodney King to Osama Bin Laden, handicams aren't just for weddings and family vacations anymore. Over the past decade, amateur camcorders have become the eyes of the world when no one else is watching.

Human rights activists, war crimes investigators, right-wing proselytizers and ordinary citizens are arming themselves with the tools of the new visual revolution. For two years filmmakers Katerina Cizek and Peter Wintonick crossed the world tracking media activists to look at what happens when front-line advocates pick up personal camcorders to document what they see. What are the risks and responsibilities? What are the wider impacts on television, audiences, and society?

SEEING IS BELIEVING discusses the history of the camcorder and illuminates the work and words of key international journalists and media activists. And it shines a verite spotlight on the compelling story of Joey Lozano, a courageous video-activist who documents rights abuses against indigenous people in dangerous corners of the Philippines. But does Joey's camera prevent violence - or jeopardize lives?

Drawn from original shooting around the world, and sampling hundreds of hours of exclusive contemporary archives, SEEING IS BELIEVING provides a dramatic and multi-faceted window into the power of do-it-yourself filmmaking.

    Reviews
  • "An absorbing film about information technology." - Robert Fulford, National Post

  • "Recommended! Thorough coverage and effective editing make SEEING IS BELIEVING an appropriate vehicle for portraying the importance of balanced news reporting and the revolutionary results of technology in overcoming the 'digital divide.' Academic libraries serving professors and students of journalism, sociology, and human rights would benefit from having this video in their collection." - Educational Media Reviews Online

  • "Fascinating... an indictment of the mass media. Despite the often difficult-to-watch footage it contains, SEEING IS BELIEVING is essential viewing, particularly for those who still harbour naive notions that the mainstream news media will provide us with all the coverage of world affairs that we need." - Basem Boshra, Montreal Gazette

  • "An interesting examination of the impact of modern recording devices. Convincingly demonstrates the power of images in increasing awareness of wrong-doing and extremism, but also reveals how the same devices can be used to less altruistic ends. Recommended! " - Video Librarian

  • "A particularly engaging piece of work. The film seems to argue that the handicam is a critical tool of non-violent resistance... though it raises other questions about the utility and power of this magical box. (It) points out that all documentary footage is subject to interpretative dispute... and question(s) whether the handicam might actually endanger certain lives more than it protects them. Significant and useful for collections supporting documentary studies." - Ken Nolley, H-Film

  • "A brisk documentary that really should be played in media and journalism classes." - Andrew Ryan's Short List, The Globe and Mail

    GHOSTS OF ATTICA

    Directed by Brad Lichtenstein
    Narrated by Susan Sarandon

Attica. Like Watergate and Vietnam, it is an icon of recent history. Gov. Rockefeller's brutal re-taking of the prison - a nine-minute, 1600-bullet assault that took the lives of 29 inmates and 10 guards - put an end to the four-day rebellion. But the struggle for justice, by both prisoners and guards, has endured for three decades. Only last year, inmates wrested an historic $12-million settlement from the state, and that bittersweet victory spurred a new round of agitation by guards and their survivors.

This stirring documentary features extensive interviews with Attica survivors, including former inmate Frank "Black" Smith. When the riot broke out, the inmates, who respected his level head, imposing size, and maturity, appointed him Chief of Security. After the prison was stormed, Black was singled out for vicious treatment by the guards, who tortured him for hours with cigarettes, Russian roulette, and threatened castration and death. In the years since his release, Black overcame a drug habit, married, and became a drug counselor for juveniles.

Also interviewed is Mike Smith, who, then 22 years old and married with a child, was a guard who was taken hostage and subsequently wounded by police fire. But more recently, he took on a new role: that of political agitator. He is currently lobbying Governor Pataki for compensation, counseling, and an apology from the State.

Elizabeth Fink, the attorney who headed the inmates' decades-long legal battles against New York State, is also interviewed. Fink has devoted her entire career to the surviving inmates. Other interviews include those with New York Times columnist Tom Wicker, Congressman Herman Badillo, Assemblyman Arthur Eve, and civil rights lawyer William Kunstler.

GHOSTS OF ATTICA offers the definitive account of America's most violent prison rebellion, its suppression, and the days of torture that ensued. Using exclusive, newly uncovered video of the assault, interviews with eyewitnesses who've never spoken before on-camera, and footage of inmates and hostages throughout their battles against the state, this film unravels one of America's deepest cover-ups, and shows how the legendary prison riot transformed the lives of its survivors.

    Reviews
  • "(Four Stars). Highly recommended. Recounting the entire fiasco and the government cover-up that followed, while documenting Elizabeth Fink's legal battle... this fine documentary also addresses the demands of the guards that were wounded in the attack and of the families of the guards killed in the police action... Well-edited and loaded with revealing photographs and cogent commentary... this is an exceptional piece of filmmaking." - Video Librarian

  • "An excellent and constantly engaging primer on the horrific riot... the ghosts of Attica are very much alive " - The Hollywood Reporter

  • "One of [the] best documentaries in quite a while. Absolutely chilling." - New York Daily News

  • "A hard-hitting documentary... This film is masterful in its portrayal of the fear, raw emotion, and lingering pain of Attica survivors. It presents brutal, graphic detail of an event indicative of a turbulent time in America's history. Highly Recommended." - Educational Media Reviews Online

  • "Powerful and disturbing...a timely film that is likely to fuel the continuing debate over how our society deals with those that are incarcerated." - indiewire.com

    WAR PHOTOGRAPHER

By Christian Frei with James Nachtwey

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough." - Robert Capa

War photographer James Nachtwey has been close enough for twenty years. Over this time he hasn't missed a single war. And he probably has seen more suffering and dying than anyone else alive.

For WAR PHOTOGRAPHER, Feature, Christian Frei followed Nachtwey for two years into the wars in Indonesia, Kosovo, Palestine ...

If we believe Hollywood pictures, war photographers are all hard-boiled and cynical old troopers. How can they think about 'exposure time' at the very moment of dread? But James Nachtwey is no rumbling swaggerer. He is an unobtrusive man, with grey hair and the deliberation of a professor of philosophy. A thoughtful, rather shy person - who many think of as the bravest and best war photographer ever.

Christiane Amanpour, Chief International Correspondent of CNN, Hans-Hermann Klare, Foreign Editor of STERN Magazine, Christiane Breustedt, Editor-in-Chief of GEO SAISON Magazine, and other friends and colleagues of Nachtwey talk about his photos, his relationship to his work, and the impact it has on his personal life. And many of his most powerful images are shown in the film.

Finally, and most amazingly, in WAR PHOTOGAPHER special video micro-cameras are attached to Nachtwey's still camera. We hear every breath of the photographer. We participate in the act of shooting war photos. And for the first time in the history of movies about photographers, this technique allows us the most intimate insight into the work of a concerned photojournalist.

    Reviews
  • "A great photojournalist and a genuine hero!" - Peter Ranier, New York Magazine

  • "A remarkable film about a remarkable man." - Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times

  • "Portrays a committed, almost shy man, who moves with agility and care through the scenarios he is recording. The musical score emphasizes the dignified yet urgent nature of the subject matter, and despite the images of horror and tragedy, the film is a work of somber beauty." - Al Jadid, A Review and Record of Arab Culture and Arts

  • "Engrossing! Exceptionally intimate, allowing us almost literally to see the world through Mr. Nachtwey's eyes." - New York Times

MAGNUM PHOTOS: THE CHANGING OF A MYTH

    By Reiner Holzemer

For a young photographer today, it is still a great dream to become a member of Magnum Photos, the world's most prestigious photo agency. Founded as a unique cooperative in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour and George Rodger, Magnum Photos is owned by its members. Created to give photographers the freedom and independence to work outside of the restrictive formulas of commercial journalism, Magnum was built upon the principle that the vision of every individual photographer be respected.

Today the agency runs offices in London, Paris, New York and Tokyo. With almost 50 photographers it strives to record all facets of the human condition, be it beauty or horror. Working on projects for years, resisting trends and sensationalism (not one image of the late Princess Diana can be found in its archive), the members of Magnum are still considered the premier photographers in the world.

MAGNUM PHOTOS captures on film Magnum photographers Martin Parr, Larry Towell, Luc Delahaye and Donovan Wylie, the youngest member, in the field. Well-known photographers Rene Burri and Philipp Jones Griffiths discuss the history of this groundbreaking institution, putting its accomplishments into context. Filmmaker Reiner Holzemar was granted extraordinary access to the intimate workings of the agency. He is the first to have filmed the annual Magnum Photos meeting, where some of the world's finest photographers decide upon the nominations of new members. Reiner was able to film Henri Cartier-Bresson, the camera shy founder of Magnum, shortly before Bresson's 90th birthday.

From the farmlands of Canada where Mexican Mennonites toil, to the battlefields of Bosnia, MAGNUM PHOTOS explores the history and accomplishments of this remarkable and resilient agency. Although the non-commercial principles upon which Magnum is founded are difficult to adhere to in trying financial times, the Magnum archive of over one million photographs continues to grow.

    Reviews
  • "Artfully weaves together a sort of history of Magnum Photos. An excellent video ... [on] photography's changing role. It will inspire undergraduates and fire up bored professionals. Filmmaker Reiner Holzemer deserves a round of applause. Highly recommended." - Educational Media Reviews Online

  • "A tightly edited 58 minutes of history and honest talk about the cooperative... [MAGNUM PHOTOS] succeeds in letting us hear what's on [the photographers'] minds, watching them shoot and seeing the final contact sheet. If you liked Russell Miller's book on Magnum, you'll enjoy seeing the personalities come to life in Holzemer's film." - PDN (Photo District News)

  • "Utilizing some first rate shots of the classic images on which Magnum's reputation was built, [MAGNUM PHOTOS] provides an excellent general introduction to those unique qualities and achievements that still make it the finest photo agency in the world.... NAJI AL-ALI: AN ARTIST WITH VISION

    Directed by Kasim Abid

"During the 30 years since I started drawing, I feel I have been through every Arab prison and I ask myself: What is there to come after all this? I was prepared to die defending just one drawing, because every drawing is like a drop of water which makes its way through the minds of people." - Naji Al Ali

Throughout history artists have faced the threat of violence when their work offended the state or the political elite. The late Palestinian cartoonist Naji Al-Ali produced thousands of cartoons satirizing the powers that be in the Middle East, and paid the ultimate price for his 'offensive' expression. On July 22, 1987 he was shot in the face, at point blank range, as he left the London offices of the Al Qabbas newspaper. He died after laying in a coma for 5 weeks.

Emerging from humble beginnings in the refugee camps, for over 30 years he was an uncompromising critic of a regressive Arab political culture and of Western intervention in Arab affairs. Interviews with leading Arab journalists and poets, former jail mates, his wife and others give us insight to his unrelenting commitment to his people, and into his subtly satirical cartoons that stirred the hearts of millions of refugees. NAJI AL-ALI, AN ARTIST WITH VISION examines the forces that shaped Naji as an artist, as a human being, and shows how his experiences mirror those of other exiled Palestinians.

Known as the Palestinian Malcolm X, Naji is still the most popular artist in the Arab world, loved for his defense of the ordinary people, and for his criticism of repression and despotism. Paradoxically, strict censorship and widespread illiteracy in the Arab world helped Naji to achieve his remarkable success. His unrelenting cartoons exposed the brutality of the Israeli army and the hypocrisy of the PLO, earning him many powerful enemies. The turning point in Naji's story was the publication of his cartoon satirizing Egyptian journalist Rashida Muhran, Yasser Arafat's official biographer. Arafat was furious and Naji was forced to leave for London.

Despite some arrests by Scotland Yard and an investigation by MI5, the assassin's identity has never been revealed. Who murdered Naji, the Mossad or the PLO?

    Reviews
  • "Highly Recommended! Especially appropriate for college and university libraries that support programs in politics, Middle Eastern studies and the arts. Commemorates the life of a man who lived according to his ideals and never forgot his people, even when he was among the highest paid journalists in the Arab world. Naji lives on through his cartoons, and the video makes it possible to share this controversial artwork with a new audience, despite persistent attempts at censure." - Educational Media Reviews Online

  • "This valuable film... goes a long way toward preserving the memory of Naji al-Ali, allowing future generations to draw inspiration from this remarkable individual. Does an outstanding job of introducing not only the personality of al-Ali, but also the most important events shaping his work... Includes an excellent cross-section of the thousands of political drawings Al-Ali published in his lifetime." - Al Jadid: A Review & Record of Arab Culture and Arts

  • "NAJI AL-ALI, AN ARTIST WITH VISION offers a valuable and vital primer into an extraordinary life, lived in extraordinary times in an unfortunate land. Al-Ali's cartoons illuminate the [film] ...and offer a wonderful visual documentation of the pain of Palestine. The history of the Palestinian struggle can never be recorded without some reference to the trenchant cartoons of Naji al-Ali." - Politics and Culture

DRAWING CONCLUSIONS: EDITORIAL CARTOONISTS CONSIDER HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON

    By Elaine K. Miller

Editorial cartoonists mine the metaphors of our social landscape. This program takes up the questions of how cartoonists approach their work and the role of stereotypes in cartoon messages.

Nationally syndicated editorial cartoonists Jeff MacNelly, Mike Peters, Paul Szep, and Ann Telnaes (one of the very few women in the profession) comment on portrayals of Hillary Rodham Clinton, a First Lady who has tapped a deep reservoir of gender-based sentiments on the part of the U.S. public. They also reflect on why there are so few women in the editorial cartooning profession, and what that might mean both for the profession and for the reading public.

The cartoonists' ability to engage us raises questions about the role that editorial cartoons may play not only in reflecting but also in shaping the terms of public discourse about gender issues. Understanding how the cartoons work is an exercise in visual literacy.

    Reviews
  • "An excellent resource for classes in rhetoric, visual communication, political discourse and gender studies. The presentation gives students an opportunity to observe caricature in the making, visual claims, and rhetoric as satire - in a witty and instructive format. I highly recommend the video and study guide as a source of spirited classroom discussion and innovative assignments." - Diane S. Hope, Ph.D., Professor of Rhetoric and Visual Communication, Rochester Institute of Technology

  • "An excellent springboard for a discussion with your class about gender stereotypes. [DRAWING CONCLUSIONS] clearly demonstrates that strong, assertive women are especially likely to be the victims of discrimination and bias." - The Psychology of Women

  • "[DRAWING CONCLUSIONS] succinctly and incisively helps viewers understand the nature of political satire and its place in American journalism. An excellent framework for class discussion and further research." - Journalism & Mass Communication Educator

    CRISIS ON CAMPUS

Crisis On Campus is an exciting new editing exercise from the producers of "The Hold Up." It is specifically designed for broadcast journalism students, but will be useful for all students of editing technique.

This realistic simulation of a major breaking news story is played out by the students, faculty and staff of the University of New Orleans, SWAT Team and professional crews from two local TV stations. The core of "Crisis on Campus" is 40 minutes of rushes, available in VHS or 3/4" which students can use to edit their own version of the story. The footage includes complete coverage by the two news teams, aerial footage from the helicopter and "shaky-cam" coverage from the home video camera. Interviews include the University Chancellor, the Director of Campus Police, the SWAT Team coordinator and Public Information Officer, friends and relatives of the perpetrator and the hostages and students caught in the crossfire. Voice-over and stand-ups by reporter Noel Osigian are also provided. To make the exercise most meaningful and realistic, it is recommended that each student editing "Crises on Campus" create and record his or her own story and stand-up's. Editing possibilities are virtually limitless and will depend heavily and realistically on the "time-slot" allotted to the story by the instructor. The "Crises on Campus" package also includes a 12-minute introductory video hosted by former ABC foreign correspondent and anchor Richard Anderson, that presents the basic situation and uses the "Crises on Campus" material to demonstrate the best use of video coverage, sound bites, reaction shots, stand-up's and natural sound.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: The situation is dramatic and compelling. Brilliant but unbalanced physics major Jimmy Jerrold, his body wired with explosives, is holding two hostages on the roof of the University Performing Arts Center. As a helicopter and a SWAT Team with armored personnel carrier converge on the spot, Jerrold panices and opens fire on students in the quad below. Two news teams and a passerby with a home video camera capture the chaos and the tense negotiations that finally lead to Jerrolds' surrender and the safe release of the hostages.

NO MAN'S LAND: WOMEN FRONTLINE JOURNALISTS

    Directed by Shelley Saywell
    Narrated by Kate Nelligan

NO MAN'S LAND profiles members of a truly rare breed - women war correspondents.

The film focuses on Janine di Giovanni, an American reporter who covers Sarajevo for London's Sunday Times, and Lyse Doucet who covers the "forgotten war" in Afghanistan for the BBC. As they and a number of other correspondents, including Clare Hollingworth who became a legend covering World War II for the Daily Telegraph, Martha Teichner, and Ann Medina speak of their experiences and personal sacrifices, many common traits are revealed. All are extremely independent, and not one has had a child - Hollingworth's husband even went so far as to divorce her on grounds of desertion.

As the camera accompanies di Giovanni to visit with 13 year old Zlata Filipovic, whose war diaries have since taken her to the brink of international celebrity, and Doucet in Kabul, where she seems to hear nothing but bad news of friends and acquaintances who have died since her last visit, NO MAN'S LAND is a gripping portrait of women who have staked places in a traditionally male profession.

RUNNING MATE: GENDER AND POLITICS IN THE EDITORIAL CARTOONS

    By Elaine K. Miller

Geraldine Ferraro's 1984 Vice Presidential candidacy provided editorial cartoonists access to a rich and previously untapped lode of material. RUNNING MATE examines their portrayals of the first woman ever to appear on a major party Presidential ticket.

Drawn from a study of 172 cartoons in 12 U.S. newspapers, RUNNING MATE reveals the gender stereotypes which hounded the Mondale/Ferraro ticket from the moment she was chosen. Her political and legislative record notwithstanding, Ferraro was first and foremost a woman in a situation where, according to one cartoon, "any woman will do." Ferraro's nomination was compared to the selection of winners in the Miss America pageant. She was depicted in domestic, romantic, or explicitly sexual contexts. And as the campaign progressed, Mondale and Ferraro became a couple in the traditional sense of husband and wife, although she often "wore the pants."

Including interviews with Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonists Signe Wilkinson and Tom Toles, and featuring Ferraro's own reactions to the caricatures, RUNNING MATE is an eye opening look at the role of gender in U.S. politics.
