CONSUMING KIDS: THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF CHILDHOOD

Featuring interviews with Enola Aird, Dr. Michael Brody, Nancy Carlsson-Paige, Josh Golin, Diane Levin, Susan Linn, Dr. Alvin Poussaint, Dr. Michael Rich, Juliet Schor, and other prominent children's advocates.

With virtually no government or public outcry, the multi-billion dollar youth marketing industry has been able to use the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world. American kids now influence an estimated $700 billion in annual spending, targeted virtually from birth with a relentless bombardment of sophisticated commercial appeals designed to sell everything from Hollywood merchandise and junk foods to iPods, cell phones, the family car and vacations. The result is that childhood itself has been commercialized. Drawing on the insights of experts, industry insiders, and children themselves, Consuming Kids traces the evolution and impact of this disturbing and unprecedented phenomenon, exposing the youth marketing industry's controversial tactics and exploring the effect of hyper-consumerism on the actual lived experience of children.

CYBER SAFE: IDENTIFYING AND COMBATING CYBER BULLIES

Bullying has long been an unfortunate aspect of schooling, but today it is no longer confined to the real world. Cyber bullies are making their presence felt, and, while their motivations are the same as those of the schoolyard bully, the way they operate is quite different.

This essential program looks at what cyber bullying is; cyber stalking and the law; and what students can do to protect themselves from this ever increasing threat. Education for parents and school communities is also examined, with strategies on how to deal with cyber bullying and positive schoolwide solutions.

MEDIA LITERACY: UNDERSTANDING MEDIA LITERACY

TV and radio commercials, Web sites and banner ads, magazine ads, pop songs, photos, and even news articles and textbooks: all of them are sending messages to influence the reader/viewer/listener. How do they grab the attention? What are they selling - a product or service? a lifestyle? an ideology? - and why? Would a different media consumer interpret the message differently? This program raises more questions than it answers, which is the whole point: to prompt students to question, question, question the messages they are bombarded with daily. Savvy media consumers aren't born; they're made, and this program is an excellent tool for shaping the classroom dialogue.

BLOGGING: SERIOUS MEDIA OR JUST A RANT?

However, the internet has meant that ordinary people can be both producer and distributor of information and opinions through web-logs (blogs). However, the question still remains; are their voices really being heard? Having an online presence is one thing, but how do you attract attention to your blog when there are already 8.5 million bloggers out there? This program will inform students about the emergence of blogs, look at their associated negatives and positives and debate whether they really are an opportunity for the alternative voice or just uncensored rants.

    TEENS AT RISK: TEENAGE DEPRESSION

he statistics on teen depression are sobering. Studies indicate that one in five children have some sort of mental, behavioral, or emotional problem and that one in ten of these problems are serious. Among adolescents, one in eight may suffer from depression. Of all these children and teens, a mere 30% receive any sort of intervention or treatment. The other 70% simply struggle through the pain of mental illness or emotional turmoil, doing their best to make it to adulthood. The consequences of untreated depression can range from increased incidence of depression in adulthood, involvement in the criminal justice system, or in some cases, suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 24. Even more shocking, it is the sixth leading cause of death among children ages 5 - 14. The most troubling fact is that these struggling teens often receive no counseling, therapy or medical intervention, even though the National Institute of Mental Health reports that studies show treatments of depression in children and adolescents can be effective.

BEYOND GOOD & EVIL: CHILDREN, MEDIA & VIOLENT TIMES

    Written by Chyng Sun
Directed and edited by Miguel Picker

Beyond Good and Evil argues that U.S. political leaders and news media responded to the 9/11 tragedy by simplifying complex international relationships into a fight between good and evil.

The program examines how this "good and evil" narrative shapes our perceptions of, and response to, conflict more generally. Focusing on the impact of such rhetoric and imagery on children, the film asks viewers to consider the long term consequences of reductive thinking.

    Review
  • "Beyond Good and Evil highlights the failure of government and our most powerful media corporations either to protect children from the harm of real and virtual violence or to foster thoughtful, ethical responses to complex social and political issues. The pure-hearted reactions of the children in this film to the horrors of war are moving, while the simplistic thinking of many of the adults is appalling." - Joan Almon, US Alliance for Childhood

  • "At a time when educators across the US are dealing with how to complicate young people's thinking around the various world issues we as a country are involved in, here is a superb tool for teachers to explore these issues from a deeper perspective than I have ever seen. A wonderful staff development tool to discuss these issues as a staff and get a lively discussion going around some difficult to talk about topics." - Linda Lantieri, Founding Director, Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP), a project of Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR)

  • "How do simplistic good versus evil and us versus them messages influence U.S. culture and policy-making, from classrooms to media to the highest levels of government? This MEF film explores this question." - Rob Williams, President, Action Coalition for Media Education (ACME)

DEADLY PERSUASION: THE ADVERTISING OF ALCOHOL & TOBACCO

    By Sut Jhally

In Deadly Persuasion: The Advertising of Alcohol & Tobacco, Jean Kilbourne exposes the manipulative marketing strategies and tactics used by the tobacco and alcohol industries to keep Americans hooked on their dangerous products. Illustrating her analysis with hundreds of current advertising examples from mainstream and trade sources, Kilbourne presents a compelling argument that these cynical industries have a clear and deep understanding of the psychology of addiction -- an understanding they exploit to create and feed a life-threatening dependency on their products.

Deadly Persuasion casts a critical eye on the corporate interests that lie behind the industries whose products kill more than 450,000 Americans each year.

    Reviews
  • "This video is an excellent tool for educating students how to fight back against the corporate world of alcohol and tobacco advertising." - Janice Morello, RN

  • "Once again, Jean Kilbourne effectively summarizes the assault by the tobacco and alcohol industry on young people and other vulnerable populations... Deadly Persuasion offers a powerful and concise look at the impact of advertising on the abuse of the two deadliest drugs. Kilbourne not only outlines the problem, but offers concrete solutions to addressing this attack as well." - Robin Rieske, Prevention Consultant, Vermont Dept. of Health

  • "The information on tobacco and alcohol abuse is presented in a clear manner that can be understood by people who have only a small amount of knowledge concerning these issues. The graphics and commercial clips used really drive home the message of how well these products are marketed." - David Dias, Public Relations, American Lung Association of Santa Clara-San Benito Counties

It is sure to spark lively debate about the complex and controversial topic of violent entertainment's impact on society.

    Review
  • "We need to stop an industry that's selling death and horror and destruction to children as entertainment... These games are firearms training devices at best, and murder simulators at worst." - Lt. Col. David Grossman (US Army Rangers, Ret.)

    TV VIOLENCE AND YOU

Why are television shows created with such a high level of violence, and how are viewers affected by it? In this program, George Gerbner, of the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication, and other media experts provide insightful commentary on both blatant and subtle TV violence. Drawn from one week of television programming, video clips fall into five main areas: building distrust through stereotypes and putdowns, the impact of TV on interpersonal relationships, news coverage and "fiction by selection," TV as big business, and censorship. Some content may be objectionable.
