Mood Disorder
In this compelling documentary covering the latest science available for treating depression and anxiety, experts explain how to eliminate the need for antidepressant medications by using safe, natural, and effective treatment alternatives. Julia Ross, M.A., author of The Mood Cure, talks about the four different kinds of depression and the amino acids used to treat each. We learn from her and from other experts and doctors how to smoothly and safely transition from antidepressant drugs to supplements (such as St. John's Wort, for example), and we delve into case histories of patients who have been successflly treated in this manner. We learn about specific forms of depression, such as postpartum depression. Bio-identical hormones and their relationship to depression are explored, along with the use of quantum physics in treating depression and the importance of cleansing the body with special detox treatments. In a special segment, we see Karen Barth Menzies, a lead attorney in the case concerning suicide and Paxil, address a public meeting on this legal controversy, bringing us to the forefront of the psychiatric treatment debate.

4-8 Percent of American children experience bouts of major depression. For teenage girls, the rate is as high as 16 percent. Early treatment makes a big difference for these children, interrupting potential patterns of repeated depression later in life, improving school performance and socialization, and preventing substance abuse and suicide. This program will look at depression among children, with special attention to what the children themselves say about coping with this disease. It includes interviews with David G. Fassler, MD, a Child psychiatrist and Author of Help Me I'm Sad, and Steven Atkins, Psy.D., a psychologist at Dartmouth Medical School.
"During the film we come to learn that prolonged sadness or anger can sometimes be symptoms of childhood depression. According to the film's producer, Jamie Guth, Up until the early 1980's most people thought children just could not get depressed. Today we know it's just not true. Children can and do get clinically depressed. Statistics also show that 1 out of 10 kids have attempted suicide before high school. This film shares important information to help parents identify early symptoms of childhood depression. It interviews psychiatrists, psychologists, and parents of children with depression, to give insight into how depression can affect the entire family. A number of treatment options are discussed. Medication may be used, but always in conjunction with counseling, and with family support. The film shows that depression can be treated successfully, and the interviews with the children offer a message of hope for children and families. This film is highly recommended for a wide audience, from children at the high school level, parents, and especially teachers. Public, school, and academic libraries could benefit from having this tape in their collections." - Selina Wang, Earl K. Long Library, University of New Orleans

Although the direct relationship between psychological health and physical health has long been recognized, there still is a great deal of misinformation and, to a degree, social stigma surrounding the subject of mental illness. This program looks at the epidemiology of mental disorders and promising treatment approaches that are emerging as researchers learn more about biology of such diseases. The diagnosis and treatment of depression - a leading illness throughout the world - and bulimia, a disease which affects teenagers and young adults, are probed in depth.

Depression affects over 17 million Americans each year. It is estimated that only one-third receive any treatment, largely because of stigma and fear. Through an overview of medications and therapy, we hear stories of how the disease is stabilized for the individual. Also shown are people suffering from manic depression where delusional properties require intervention to help the brain chemistry respond in a more balanced manner. Mike Wallace, of 60 Minutes, is featured as one who has battled with depression and talks about the shame he felt in getting help. Excellent for mental health professionals and support groups.
