Konstantin Lifschitz

In 1994, a recording of Bach¡¦s "Goldberg" Variations made the Russian pianist Konstantin Lifschitz an international figure. That was long enough ago that it¡¦s amazing to realise that he¡¦s only 23 now-and he was 17 then. When he made his American debut at the Newport Festival in 1996, this listener felt like an intruder reading someone¡¦s innermost thoughts in a private diary-and Lifschitz was playing Chopin¡¦s Op. 10 Etudes. That feeling of eavesdropping was even more profoundly pronounced Wednesday night when Lifschitz played a long and demanding Schubert program at the International Piano Festival at Williams College-both sets of Impromptus, the Moments Musicaux, and the Drei Klavierstuecke. The program reminded us, among other things, of how young Schubert was when he wrote some of his greatest music.

DVD 2

Gary Burton

Born in 1943 and raised in Indiana, Gary Burton taught himself to play the vibraphone and, at the age of 17, made his recording debut in Nashville, Tennessee, with guitarists Hank Garland and Chet Atkins. Two years later, Burton left his studies at Berklee College of Music to join George Shearing and subsequently Stan Getz, with whom he worked from 1964-1966. Borrowing rhythms and sonorities from rock music, while maintaining jazz's emphasis on improvisation and harmonic complexity, Burton's first quartet attracted large audiences from both sides of the jazz-rock spectrum. During his subsequent association with the label (1973-1988) the Burton Quartet expanded to include the young Pat Metheny on guitar, and the band began to explore a repertoire of modern compositions. In the '70s, Burton also began to focus on more intimate contexts for his music. His 1971 album Alone at Last, a solo vibraphone concert recorded at the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival, was honored with a Grammy Award.

Francois Rabbath

Born in Aleppo, Syria into a musical family of six boys and three girls, Francois discovered the double bass at the age of thirteen when one of his brothers brought an instrument home and allowed him to experiment with it. When the family moved to Beirut, Lebanon he found an old copy of Edouard Nanny's Contrabass Method in a tailor shop and with some difficulty, since he read neither music nor French, began to teach himself. After nine years of work in Beirut, Francois saved enough money to move to Paris. While in Paris he began to earn his living as an accompanist for Jacque Brel, Charles Aznavour, Gilbert Becaud, Michel Legrand and others. In 1963 he made his first of many solo record albums. Although never advertised or promoted, the Phillips album Bass Ball became one of the most sought after recordings of its time. From 1964 he became active composing much music for movies and the theater. At the same time he started to play solo recitals, first in France, then throughout Europe. His American debut was in Carnegie Hall in 1975.

Chick Corea

Considering the staggering volume of his recorded output over the past 40 years, it is no overstatement to call Chick Corea one of the most prolific composers of the second half of the 20th century. From avant-garde to bebop, from children's songs to straight ahead, from hard-hitting fusion to heady forays into classical, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his illustrious career while maintaining a standard of excellence that is simply uncanny. A restlessly creative spirit, he continues to explore and generate new material for a number of different vehicles, including his dynamic Elektric Band and his flamenco flavoured Touchstone band. Other recent projects include The Ultimate Adventure, the second in a series of evocative recordings based on the writings of his favorite author and longtime inspiration, L. Ron Hubbard.

RAMEAU PROJECT, THE

Power, culture, family, dirt, failure, violence, age, loss and reminiscence.

The results of a four-year development process by The opera Project, THE RAMEAU PROJECT is a sprawling, multi-layered music theatre work for nine performers, featuring Kellaway's "re-imaginings" of the music of Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). Reveling in the sometime grandeur, delicacy, complexity and underlying wit of the French Baroque, it employs seductive improvisations on a complex layering of sophisticated deceits.

Devised and directed by Nigel Kellaway in collaboration with the performers
Performers: Nikki Heywood (replacing Regina Heilmann), Nigel Kellaway, Annette Tesoriero
Musicians: Heloise Pyne, Katrina Papallo, Catherine Upex, Steve Meyer, Ashley Kurrle, Michael Bell. Composer: Nigel Kellaway (after J-P. Rameau, F. Couperin and M. Marais) Dramaturg: Bryoni Trezise Lighting/Production: Simon Wise Sound operation: Dara Gill

Review
  • "The Rameau Project confirms Kellaway's esoteric vision¡Xmusically scholarly, literary, in love with the cut and paste of building idiosyncratic works out of others' classics ¡K a modus operandi which faces the inevitability of likewise becoming itself 'classical'." NIGEL KELLAWAY IN SLEEPERS WAKE! WACHET AUF!

    The opera Project

Who is this man photographed recently on a beach nearby? On approach he spoke a dialect of musical memes, adolescent delusions, TV sound grabs, punch-lines and pedagogy. He hummed sound bytes from what a local lifesaver identified as Bach's Goldberg Variations. Developed over two years in Sydney, Perth, the south of France and Berlin, Sleepers Wake! Wachet Auf! is a unique and remarkable collaboration between Kellaway and distinguished writing talents. Composed, performed and directed by Kellaway, this most surprising performance finds a man at the edge of recollection, harboring a nagging desire to connect with the present. Adrift from cultural and historical specificities where nostalgia for Glenn Gould and Dean Martin washes up alongside political anxiety and an unreliable memory.

Camera: Peter Oldham, performers: Nigel Kellaway (actor/director), Michael BellMargaret Howard (violinist), Catherine Tabrett ('cellist).
    (pianist),

Writers: Virginia Baxter (NSW), Jai McHenry (France), Amanda Stewart (NSW), Josephine Wilson (WA).Composer: Nigel Kellaway. Lighting: Simon Wise.

ORGANISTAS AND CREATING THE STRADIVARIUS OF ORGANS

    By Bert Shapiro

    DVD1: Organistas

In this impressionistic view behind the scenes into the fascinating world of the pipe organ, master musicians reveal why they are passionate about the "King of Instruments". World renowned designers and craftspeople show how the sophisticated, rarely-seen skills of "voicing" and molten-metal forming are used to make the organ "speak" with a unique sound. The film uses music ranging from Bach to the contemporary master Stephen Paulus. Their glorious sounds are heard and "seen" in magnificent churches, chapels, concert halls and private homes. Also included is rare filming of a tiny instrument built about 1680 being played in a private office in London, performed especially for the film.

DVD 2: Creating the Stradivarius of Organs

"Unlike other instruments, the organ is designed, built and voiced for a specific space. This film beautifully highlights the unique symbiosis between the instrument and the building and the instrument and the performer. I salute this inspiring tribute to the King of Instruments at St.Ignatius Loyola."

ELGAR'S ENIGMA: BIOGRAPHY OF A CONCERTO

Elgar's Enigma: Biography of a Concerto follows a theory that the composer maintained a life-long connection to his first love, Helen Weaver, and to her New Zealand-born son Kenneth Munro. A subtle weave of interview, archive, re-enactment and performance explores the proposition that Elgar's Cello Concerto was inspired by ANZAC Kenneth's death in the trenches of WW1.

Renowned American cellist Lynn Harrell performs a moving interpretation of the concerto with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Matthias Bamert.

    SIGNING SONGS

Signing Songs is an entertaining film that teaches sign language through music to help children develop their speech and language.

The DVD demonstrates how to teach signing to babies or children with special needs and works for all children. This approach was developed by board certified music therapist, Lesley Ketcham and the caring father of a child with special needs.

The use of songs with signs enables children to communicate with their hands before they talk. It assists children in the following ways:

  • Increases clarity of a child's wants and needs
  • Promotes active participation and play
  • Greatly expands a child's vocabulary
  • Develops self-esteem
  • Combines visual, physical, verbal and musical learning
  • Stimulates brain development
  • Develops motor skills, using movement
  • Creates a rich learning environment
  • Fosters language growth and music appreciation

Sometimes sign language is used to communicate full sentences, especially for children with hearing impairments. In this instance, only specific words in the songs are highlighted by sign. Target words are paired with signs in music to provide for an opportunity for learning in a structured and fun manner.

Signs in this film are not exact; rather they are made to be appropriate for the cognitive and fine motor developmental level of children. The signs, gestures and imitation skills learned are meant to be an easy way to bridge the gap until more expressive language skills are learned.

In addition to specific signs, it is important for children to be able to imitate actions and gestures. Songs in this film also provide opportunity to practice imitation skills, not just specific signs.

Signing Songs is also relies on a natural setting to teach children songs and sign language, eliminating the potential of over stimulated youngsters through flashing screens and fast-paced graphics.

    OPERA THERAPY

OPERA THERAPY documents the therapeutic journey of four people who experienced the transformative power of self-expression while battling with cancer. They were a part of creating an opera based on their personal stories, under the guidance of talented music therapist Emma O'Brien.

Mary is a 50 year old Maltese woman who is four years post bone marrow transplant for a very rare form of lymphoma; Lisa is a 33 year old Greek woman with acute leukaemia who is a mother of four and was only two weeks post bone marrow transplant when she embarked on this project; Bruce is a 53 year old man who has both terminal bone cancer (multiple myeloma) as well as multiple sclerosis, and Dianne is a 54 year old woman who shares her stories both of experiencing breast cancer herself and caring for her daughter Marla who died two weeks into the project from relapsing acute leukaemia.

The documentary filming took place throughout the creative process, displaying the innovative methods of composing used by Emma to tap into the participants' innate musicality and bring their stories to life as an opera. The subsequent performance of the opera was made possible by the involvement of the creative team from the More Than Opera opera company, and its therapeutic effects on the participants are obvious.
