SPEAKING OF ART: TINA BARNEY

Directosr: Edgar B. Howard, Muffie Dunn

Since 1975 Tina Barney has been producing large-scale photographs of family and friends. Her meticulous tableaux chronicle the complexity of interpersonal relationships. These lush color prints have been exhibited and collected by major institutions around the world from MoMA to The National Gallery, London. Barney has been the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 1991, and the 2010 Lucie Award for Achievement in Portraiture. In 2004 Barney selected work from two of her monographs Theatre of Manners and The Europeans to present in a lecture, which Checkerboard had the privilege of filming. With her unique sense of wit and humor, she recounts her photographic evolution - from her introduction to the work of Toulouse Lautrec as a young girl in Paris to her eight-year tour creating portraits throughout Europe. Barney did not begin making photographs until she was 30 and living in Sun Valley, Idaho. There, she quickly identified her interest in the East Coast world she had left behind. Returning to Rhode Island and New York, she started photographing her own family and friends, choreographing photographs and utilizing architectural divides employed by early Italian Renaissance painters and those of the Dutch Golden Age. This 55-minute visual journey, offers a comprehensive and enlightening look at the work of one of America's preeminent photographers.

SPEAKING OF ART: CARRIE MAE WEEMS

Directors: Edgar B. Howard, Muffie Dunn

In 2004 Checkerboard had the privilege of filming Carrie Mae Weems discussing her body of work, comprised of 17 projects spanning more than two decades (1981-2004).

This dynamic presentation was accompanied by slides of the artist's photographs and excerpts from her video art. The result is a chaptered lecture guided by Weems's seductive voice and passionate presence. The viewer is transported into her world as she details what she is trying to uncover, illuminate, investigate and provoke through her lens.

Our film begins with Weems's documentation of her extensive family in the 1984 series "Family Pictures and Stories" and builds gradually in complexity with "Ain't Jokin"(1987-88), an examination of racial stereotypes, and "Kitchen Table Series" (1990), in which Weems, by inserting herself into the tableau, shows us 'woman' experiencing love, motherhood, companionship, and isolation. Series such as "Sea Islands" (1991-92) and "From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried" (1995-96) and later "The Louisiana Project" (2003) and "Missing Links" (2003) focus on the African diaspora and issues of race, gender, and cultural history addressed with a blend of poignancy and humor.

In 1997, Weems says she reached a point where she "just could not function on the wall anymore," and so for the next three years printed her work on large swaths of fabric suspended from the ceiling to beckon movement through and around the images; this resulted in "Ritual and Revolution"(1998) "The Jefferson Suite"(1999) and "The Hampton Project"(2000).

KINDRED AESTHETICS: MT. LEBANON SHAKER VILLAGE, ELLSWORTH KELLY & JACK SHEAR

Directors: Tom Piper, Edgar B. Howard

The Shaker movement in America was founded by Ann Lee, a member of a religious sect near Manchester, England, that prophesized the imminent second appearance of Christ on earth. They were referred to as "Shaking Quakers" due to their ecstatic movements during worship.

Ann Lee immigrated to America in 1774, and with a small, devoted group of followers preached that the transformation and judgment of the world had begun.

In 1787, three years after Ann's death, her followers established their first communal village at Mount Lebanon, New York, which until 1947 was the central authority governing the Shaker movement in America.

The Shaker Church formed nineteen cloistered communities, throughout New England and the Midwest, designed to practice perfection on earth, based on early Christian principles of shared property, celibacy, direct revelation and public confession of sin. A small community continues at Sabbathday Lake, Maine.

In August 2011, the artists Ellsworth Kelly and Jack Shear shared their views on Shaker design and architecture with David Stocks and Jerry Grant of the Shaker Museum and Library, Old Chatham, New York.

This 17-minute film beautifully documents their exchanges, richly enhanced with archival photos of Shaker life and architecture and a variety of Ellsworth Kelly's and Jack Shear's work.

    RALPH GIBSON: PHOTOGRAPHER/BOOK ARTIST

    Director: Paula Heredia

For more than thirty years Ralph Gibson has served as one of the few truly independent forces within the art of photography. His unique graphic style - stark, erotic, chaste, allusive, surreal - is as unmistakable as it is influential. His many published books have shown generations of photographers in the U.S. and Europe that the bound printed page can be as powerful a strategy for artistic success as the gallery exhibition.

In the DVD biography, Gibson is very much the star of his own life as he discusses his colorful childhood in Los Angeles as an extra in Hollywood movies, his stints in the U.S. Navy, and as an assistant to Dorothea Lange, as well as his lean, wayward years in New York. Friends and admirers, such as Mary Ellen Mark and Larry Clark, analyze the importance of his early work, especially his first landmark book SOMNAMBULIST in 1970, for the photography scene at the time. Commentary by Eric Fischl, April Gornik, and Brian Hunt reinforces the echoing importance of Gibson's work beyond the shores of photography.

Best of all, Gibson is forthcoming about the process of his own thinking at every stage: why and how he shoots and what he shoots, the editorial decisions that dictate the laying out and putting together of spreads in a book, the role of his various muses, and the crucial point when he knows if a body of work is or is not complete. Rich in insights into the history of Gibson's vast and diverse oeuvre, this biography is also a master class with a world-class photographer.

    Reviews
  • "In this DVD biography, photographers, sculptors, painters, musicians, and models are among the individuals who converse with Gibson; their mutual respect is quite evident. The informal atmosphere of this seamless DVD reveals Gibson in all his uniqueness." -Booklist, December 2002

  • "This succinct, elegant, and well-crafted DVD supplies a wealth of information and offers excellent exposure to Gibson's work. Recommended for academic and large public libraries as well as specialized collections." -Library Journal, November 2002
