From plungers, to pipe wrenches, to Teflon tape, this program introduces each common tool of the plumbing trade with a brief demonstration of its proper use. Safety precautions and industry tips are provided as well, and four major types of piping and tubing - steel, copper, plastic, and cast iron - are described.

This program looks at plumbing in its two construction phases: rough -in, or initial installation, and final. Details of water systems and drainage, waste, and venting (DWV) systems are examined, as well as tools commonly used.
The featured professional demonstrates how to calculate the lengths of pipe (1/2" to 3" diameter) you will need in the fabrication of components requiring fixed radius 90 degree bends. He uses the manufacturer's gain table to determine the lengths of pipe needed to construct a gate frame and a stock trailer bow. Also shown are layout and cutting pipe for bending, identification of bender parts, set-up of the bender, and actual bending of pipe with a one-shot hydraulic pipe bender. Focus on the measuring, cutting and fitting of rigid and flexible copper pipe. Procedures demonstrated in this presentation include preparing the pipe for soldering, cutting rigid and flexible copper pipe and the subsequent burr removal and scarifying processes. Selection and use of soldering paste and solder, setup and use of a propane torch to solder copper connections, assembly and soldering techniques for a gate valve and preparation and usage for threaded connections also are presented.
More than 40 types of pipe, fittings and tools used in basic plumbing practices are identified and explained in the program. The featured speaker discusses the advantages and disadvantages, common lengths and gauges and uses for galvanized steel, copper (rigid and flexible) and plastic (PVC, CPVC, and ABS) pipe. His discussion of fittings includes couplings, 90 and 45 degree elbows, 90 degree street ell, reducer bushing, female and male adapters, gate and globe valves, union and tee connections. Twenty-two plumbing tools are identified and their usage explained.

He also addresses methods for joining any combination of plastic, copper or galvanized plumbing materials.
