DESIGN IN THE REAL WORLD - LOGOS

Companies and other organisations rely on logos to convey information and create brand recognition. Their design is critical - time, creativity, expertise and often, vast sums of money, are invested into their creation - but what are the principles and elements of excellent logo design?

This program explores various aspects of logo design including the various purposes for which logos are required, how they might be used and the different places they might be displayed, the logo design process and the importance of excellent communication with clients.

Expert comments come from Deakin University lecturer Dr Meghan Kelly, commercial designers Stephen Davey and Chelsea Koetsveld, and one of her clients, business owner Nick McEwan-Hall.

EXTREME BY DESIGN

Directed by Ralph King Jr. and Michael Schwarz

In a Stanford multidisciplinary, project-based course, student design teams are building a better world...one product at a time.

EXTREME BY DESIGN follows Stanford business, engineering and medical students as they work in teams, using design thinking methods, to develop products and services that serve the needs of the world's poor. One student team works on a breathing device to keep babies alive in Bangladesh. Another seeks a way to store drinking water in Indonesia. The third team project is to design an IV medicine infusion pump.

It's all part of the Design for Extreme Affordability course inspired and launched by the Stanford d.school. The film begins on the first day of the course and ends eight months later as one group of students returns to Asia to test their device amid plans to launch a startup.

At a time of unprecedented global challenges EXTREME BY DESIGN shows the power of human-centered design in creating innovative, effective and sustainable solutions to the complex problems facing us.

DESIGN IS ONE

Directos: Kathy Brew & Roberto Guerra

Italian-born Lella and Massimo Vignelli are among the world's most influential designers. Their contributions to the fields of industrial, graphic, and production design have resulted in iconic achievements in the development of corporate identity programs, home furnishing and interior design, architectural graphics, and publishing. Garnering international awards and recognition for over forty years, the Vingelli's have led the vanguard of innovative designers through their interdisciplinary mentorship. Throughout their career, their ambitious motto has been, "If you can't find it, design it."

In 1965 Massimo brought the Helvetica typeface to the United States. Igniting an interest in the Vinelli's work, this design development lead to a series of notable projects: New York's subway signage and maps; the interior of Saint Peter's Church at Citicorp Center; Venini lamps; Heller dinnerware; furniture for Poltrona Frau; and branding initiatives for Knoll International, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, Ford, and American Airlines.

Their work has covered such broad spectrum of industries and produced so many recognizable images that one could say the Vignellis have a distinct global identity, even though many do not recognize their names. Experts from the world of design including architects Richard Meier and Peter Eisenman, as well as graphic designers Milton Glaser, Michael Bierut, and Jessica Helfand, offer their anecdotes and memories of the Vignellis' work in Design is One. The film captures the Vingelli's intelligence and creativity, offering the audience intimate access into their everyday life and continuing work and a glimpse of their humanity, warmth and humor.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

This DVD explores what the food industry is doing to use less packaging. First it looks at the role and function of packaging. It then looks at the challenges of designing reduced packaging that not only looks good, but gets the product to the shelves in one piece. We also see how plastic bottles are recycled into new food grade plastic, before being formed into salad containers. An ideal resource for students studying Food Technology, Graphic Design, Resistant Materials, Product Design, Sustainability and Citizenship.

CHOOSING SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

This programme gets students thinking about the 6Rs and what makes a material sustainable, including its carbon footprint, whether it's sourced from renewable or recycled materials and what happens at "end of life". Materials discussed include: wood, plastic and textiles. Also, we look round the UK's first zero carbon housing project and visit the Smile Plastics factory where anything from mobile phones to children's wellingtons are turned into building materials.

DESIGNING WITH RECYCLED MATERIALS

This resource looks at why and how specific plastics are recycled, regenerated and tested to fulfil the required characteristics for modern sustainable products. Includes: a chair made from Sony Playstations and washing machines that use parts made from recycled fridge plastic. The DVD also shows how new technology is used to process and convert waste products into high-grade polymers. We then see these plastics undergo destructive and non-destructive tests to identify their properties and characteristics.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN AND TESTING: DESIGNING FOR INNOVATION AND SAFETY

A fantastic way to bring real and relevant industrial design into the classroom illustrating some of the considerations designers have to take into account. Footage of physical and virtual tests, filmed at Volvo's crash testing facility, will provide an excellent starting point for students when testing, evaluating and modifying their own designs. It also reinforces how engineers work collaboratively with designers to ensure that new technologies are harnessed with aesthetics.

PRODUCT DESIGN, TESTING AND MODIFICATION: TRUNKI

Designing products that meet rigorous safety standards is an increasingly important skill - especially when it comes to products used by children. Trunki, the child's pull along suitcase, may have failed the BBC Dragon's Den test, but thanks to further testing and modification it's now taking the world by storm. We film with the product designer and at one of the world's leading test centres, to find out about the different tests carried out on children's products, why calibrating equipment is so important and how clever design reduced costs and time to market. Includes footage of rotational and injection moulding and mechanical and physical tests

EVERYTHING IS DESIGN

With Tom Peters

Today, it is increasingly difficult for one organization to stand out in the crowd. Tom Peters has one surefire way to stand out. It is design. In the program, Everything is Design, Tom explains that design is more than the curve of a handle, a flashing icon, or a translucent toothbrush holder.

Design affects everything we create - products, services, processes, websites, conversations, and even careers. Its effect is rarely neutral. The purposeful thought (or lack thereof) that we put into design is the difference between an experience that is easy, helpful, fun, and inspiring - or totally frustrating.

In a world in which so many experiences are the same, great design is the key to creating an emotional connection that makes people crave what you do.

Join author Tom Peters for a passionate exploration of what he calls "one of the most promising untapped economic opportunities" of our time. Everything is Design will challenge you to recognize all the opportunities you have to win your customer's hearts by meeting their needs and desires.

Key Learning Points
  • Design is never neutral
  • Beautiful systems win
  • Create a sense of WOW
  • Go beyond "satisfied" customers

DIGITAL PRODUCT DESIGN: DESIGN FOR QUALITY, MANUFACTURING, ASSEMBLY & DISASSEMBLY PRINCIPLES, AND AN INKJET PRINTER GREEN ENGINEERING DISASSEMBLY USE CASE

In order to achieve professional quality product process and service system design engineering skills, besides a strong analytical, digital design and digital manufacturing assembly engineering foundation, one needs to learn basic and often very simple design rules. One of the best ways to learn these rules is to disassemble and analyze various products, try to understand the design manufacturing assembly processes followed, and also learn from mistakes.

In this program Professor Ranky introduces, and to some extent illustrates several basic product design, process design, design for quality, assembly disassembly, and other design rules with simple and practical examples whilst disassembling an inkjet printer on screen. In particular, the rules and principles discussed with examples include: design for quality, maintenance, assembly, disassembly, green eco-friendly design issues, cost, risk, the concept of designing components, modules, and systems that can be assembled, as well as disassembled, material selection issues, design for the environment, the principle of 'z' stacking for assembly disassembly, modular design principles, some part handling, and feeding issues, automated assembly and disassembly challenges, and others.
