IT'S NEVER TOO LATE: STOPPING TEEN SUICIDE

Armed with the latest statistics and facts on teen suicide, this DVD and print program teaches viewers how to recognize and respond to the risks of teen suicide. Viewers will learn how feelings of rage, isolation and depression affect suicidal behavior and will understand the differences between normal ˇ§bluesˇ¨ and the symptoms of severe depression.
Following media guidelines developed by the American Association of Suicidology, this program does not dramatize suicide. Rather, it focuses on stories of young adults who have overcome their problems by getting counseling and helps teenagers recognize the warning signs of suicide in their peers.

The program emphasizes that all suicide threats should be taken seriously. Students will understand that help is available, and what actions individuals can take to prevent suicides by others.

The DVD stresses that students should not be afraid to ask if a peer is thinking about suicide and that it is important to get help. It includes the true story of several teens who recognized the warning signs in a classmate, contacted a trusted adult, andˇVbecause of their interventionˇVsaved a life.

    RAPE: GET THE FACTS

This documentary-style program presents the legal, medical, psychological and sociological facts about rape. Doctors, judges, social workers, detectives, victimsˇ¦ rights advocates, self-esteem experts, and rape survivors all contribute information, perspective, and analysis of this all-too-common crime. Among the compelling facts: an act of rape or sexual assault occurs in our nation nearly once every two minutes. More than half of all rape victims are under the age of 18. Most sexual assaults are NOT committed by strangers, but by someone whom the victim knows.

This DVD explains that ˇ§date rapeˇ¨ is just as much a crime as other sexual assaults. Information is provided about the links between drugs, alcohol, and rape. Specific, practical guidelines for how to protect against rape and date rape are presented. Law enforcement professionals, medical personnel and psychologists take viewers on a step-by-step investigation of where, how and why rape occurs with the goal of informing viewers of the risks and providing strategies to avoid rape. Students will meet a woman whose unbelievable act of bravery put one rapist behind bars for good. And, a former NFL Quarterback now teaches young men a whole new set of attitudes about themselves and about their behavior towards women.

CURRICULUM IN A BOX: MANAGING EMOTIONS - STRESSED OUT: STRESS MANAGEMENT 101

Program describes different forms of stress (acute, episodic and chronic) and explains how important it is for young people to learn effective techniques for coping with stressful situations. Special attention is given to two common complaints among teens: panic attacks and social anxiety. Also highlighted are other types of stress such as test anxiety, parental demands and peer pressure. HIDDEN SCARS, SILENT WOUNDS: UNDERSTANDING SELF-INJURY

This DVD investigates the phenomenon of self-injury. Self-injury refers to a pattern in which a person harms himself or herself by cutting or even burning parts of the body to relieve stress from pent-up emotions. Many people suffer from this usually secretive activity. Typically they have endured unusual and stressful events or abusive family situations, and have resorted to self-injury as an unhealthy coping mechanism. The DVD and print package demystifies this often misunderstood problem by offering candid interviews with ˇ§cuttersˇ¨ and their families, as well as commentary by noted experts in the field. One interviewee describes her cutting as a form of self-punishment, but also as a strategy to keep her emotions from spiraling out of control. Viewers learn about the symptoms and causes of self-injury from a psychologist along with effective knowledge to sufferers and their families. Teacherˇ¦s Resource Book includes class worksheets to extend studentsˇ¦ investigation of this subject.

CURRICULUM IN A BOX: TEEN CHALLENGES AND CHOICES - RISKY BEHAVIOR: THE DARK SIDE OF BAD CHOICES

Many teens are involved in risky behaviors such as illegal drug use, promiscuity, carrying weapons, and dangerous automobile use. A recent Centers for Disease Control survey found that one in every five teens drives under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Nearly 22 percent of high school students nationwide admit to carrying a weapon. These numbers make it clear that too many adolescents are putting their lives in jeopardy with dangerous, high-risk behaviors.

This program looks at the nature of risk taking-ˇXboth good and bad-ˇXby profiling real teens and the choices they make. The program shows that when positive risk-taking choices are absent, teens are at greater risk for negative, dangerous decision making. Program concludes with an opportunity for your students to assess their own risk profile. The DVD and print materials in the Teacherˇ¦s Resource Book also suggest and model appropriate and safe risk-taking options.

This prevention-oriented DVD confronts teens and pre-teens with this vexing question: why do so many students take up smoking when they know that cigarettes kill?
