IN PURSUIT OF A DREAM

Two dozen teenagers and three teachers go back in time, dress as the pioneers did, and travel by wagon train on the Oregon Trail from Wyoming to Oregon. Along the way they meet a variety of other people, from topographical engineers mapping the West to gold seekers headed to California, and Indians wanting to trade. The interactions of the students in the film mirror the kinds of interactions experienced by the thousands of people who crossed the country in the mid 1800s on these same trails and helped create the nation as we know it today.

The kinds of hardships and problems encountered by the kids are the same as those encountered by the pioneers. Similar feelings were experienced by both groups-appreciation for the beauty of the landscape they were passing through, happiness and laughter as they danced and sang around the campfire, the sense of accomplishment they felt when they worked together to overcome a difficulty or solve a problem, joy and relief when they finally arrived in Oregon.

The teenagers learned about the history of the movement westward across the continent, they learned about the consequences of the decisions they made and the value of the bonds they formed with their fellow travelers, and they learned about the importance of preserving the history of the trails for future generations to learn from.

GROWING UP

Puberty is an important part of living and growing. During these years of a child's life the physical and emotional changes mark one of the most profound human turning points. There are surprisingly few audio-visual aids to the teacher or parents on this subject. Now BountyVision introduces Growing Up,a film that sensitively, but without coyness, presents puberty in a form suitable for educators. Produced for viewing by 10 to 12 year olds, and based on consultation with health educators, the film was created by John Halas of the Educational Film Centre. Using animated drawings it follows the stages of growth from babyhood, tracing the changes in the bodies of boys and girls through to adolescence. The film shows how boys and girls develop, how the physical characteristics change with the effect of sex hormones on the body and describes and illustrates the male and female sex organs. "Growing Up" does not cover the process of having a baby but concentrates on what is happening to the body of a boy or girl during puberty. Erection and wet dreams, menstruation and sanitary protection are dealt with simply and sensibly. Growing Up outlines the importance of exercise, nutrition and hygiene in fitness and health. It describes the best types of foods to eat and the ones to avoid; how to look after the skin and hair and how washing regularly helps to keep spots at bay. The film concludes with the fact that although the physical changes come first, emotional development continues into the twenties. People's experiences and emotions differ during puberty, But these years are really something to celebrate, for they mark a very important turning point in your life. Remembering that, and understanding what's going on, will make this part of growing up so much more enjoyable." 2004 re-release
