RISING CHINA

RISING CHINA

CHINA'S CAPITALIST REVOLUTION

This is the story of the biggest turnaround in world history - the conversion of the Chinese Communist Party to capitalism. When Chairman Mao died, hardliners were determined to continue the Cultural Revolution. But party member Deng Xiao Ping thought their policy was mad - China's food production had collapsed and its industry was on its knees.

With the help of Politburo colleagues, Deng encouraged the peasants to take back their plots from the communes, pushed through the New Economic Zones which brought in Western technology and investment and set the country on course to become one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

Yet Deng's legacy was damaged by the brutality of Tiananmen Square Massacre. Featuring interviews with Chinese government officials, entrepreneurs, workers who helped engineer Deng's reforms and with the ordinary citizens whose lives were changed by them, this programme tells the story of China's transformation into an economic superpower - while remaining still, nominally, communist.

THE REAL LEAP FORWARD - SCALING UP POVERTY REDUCTION IN CHINA

Reports on China's successful efforts to reduce poverty through sustainable development and targeted programs. China is fast becoming one of the world's industrial powerhouses. But hundreds of millions of Chinese still live in poverty, far from the coastal regions generating the new wealth. As elsewhere in the world, the gap between the rich and the poor is growing. The Chinese government is trying to address the problem -- through targeted poverty reduction programs. As Lu Fei Jie, Director General of China's State Council Leading Group on Poverty, sums it up, it is more than just a relief program-"we do not just supply money. We focus on helping people to improve their capabilities to develop the areas by themselves. To improve their basic living and work conditions. That way they can walk out of poverty forever." The Real Leap Forward reports on China's efforts to spread the new social benefits beyond the city limits -- and asks how well they're succeeding.

CELESTIAL EMPIRE, THE: PATH OF THE DRAGON - PART 2: CHINA AND THE OUTSIDE WORLD

China was a world unto itself, cut off from foreign contact by its geography. Its view of the outside world, which grew out of its cultural superiority to its immediate neighbors and from its isolation, served as a unifying force that strengthened its culture. This program examines Chinas relationship with its neighbors and the European nations. It reports on how, in the early 20th century, Chinas ancient glory gave way to a new form of government, as it finally adapted to the outside worlds.

CELESTIAL EMPIRE, THE: PATH OF THE DRAGON - PART 3: HISTORY OF TRADE IN CHINA

This episode chronicles Chinese trade, from the earliest instances over land - including the growth of trade along the Silk Road in the 2nd century B.C. - and then by sea. It tells how, in the 15th century, China turned inward again, destroying its great fleets and beginning a period of nearly 300 years of isolationism. The European then came to China, but it wasn't until 1760 that trade with Westerners officially was allowed. At the start of this century, with the fall of the Manchu Quing dynasty, foreign powers called the shots. In the early part of the century, with the rise of communism, the Chinese began to regain control of their international economic relations. China opened up, slowly at first in the 1950s and the 60s, and then more swiftly in the 70s, when relations with the U.S. improved. Today, China presents an open door to the world, while maintaining full control.
