CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY FOR ADOLESCENT DEPRESSION

With John F. Curry, PhD

Although peer pressure, stress and self-esteem issues are not new, and have been generally accepted as normal growing pains for adolescents, an increasing issue among today's adolescents is depression.

Fortunately, adolescent depression is a treatable condition: Evidence-based approaches are available and, by sharpening the skills needed to establish an effective working alliance with adolescents and applying these approaches, clinicians can provide excellent treatment.

The cognitive-behavioral approach demonstrated in this program by Dr. John F. Curry is based in developmental psychopathology and social cognitive learning theory, and typically includes behavioral activation, problem-solving, and cognitive restructuring. In the therapy demonstration, Dr. Curry applies his approach to behavioral activation and works with an adolescent teen who is suffering from depression.

CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: PRESCRIPTIVE INTEGRATIVE PLAY THERAPY

With Athena A. Drewes, PsyD, RPT-S

During the period of middle childhood, which occurs between the ages of 6 - 12, children will experience social, emotional, and cognitive developmental changes. Such changes can be challenging for therapists treating children within this age group who may have behavioral and psychological disorders.

Because behavioral and psychological disorders for children and adolescents are multi-layered and complex, often with several overlapping problems, a multifaceted treatment approach is needed.

Dr. Athena A. Drewes' approach to middle childhood play therapy consists of a prescriptive, integrative method. In this video program, Dr. Drewes demonstrates her therapeutic approach with an eight-year-old child who is a victim of bullying in school, has low self-esteem and anger management problems.

In the session, Dr. Drewes checks in with the client, demonstrates a directive approach using play-based techniques that address the presenting problem issues, and then conducts a nondirective, child-led period of time to facilitate relaxation and self-regulation.

PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT: THE MMPI-2-RF IN PRACTICE

    With David M. McCord, PhD
Hosted by Kathleen T. Bechtold, PhD

The MMPI-2-RF, the latest revision to the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, is one of the most widely researched and used psychological assessment instruments.

The MMPI-2-RF conceptualizes personality and psychopathology as a hierarchical arrangement of relatively narrow, focused, dimensional constructs. By comprehensively measuring 50-60 clinically relevant characteristics to describe the individual, the MMPI-2-RF both reflects and contributes to a historic paradigm shift in terms of how personalities and psychopathologies are rendered: Rather than trying to fit clients into specific diagnostic categories or label them with disorders, the MMPI-2-RF describes the individual as clearly and coherently as possible.

In this video, Dr. David M. McCord demonstrates how to administer the MMPI-2-RF while addressing a client's questions and concerns both compassionately and without divulging information that would influence the outcome of the assessment.

PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT: THE RORSCHACH INKBLOT TEST IN PRACTICE

    With James P. Choca, PhD
Hosted by Kathleen T. Bechtold, PhD

The Rorschach Inkblot Test is an iconic, well-known assessment tool consisting of 10 random patterns intended to elicit an interpretive response from the client. Many instruments assess for personality and intelligence, but no other tool measures a person's energy level, emotional control, and thought processes. For this reason, the Rorschach has been used for decades in clinical settings for such purposes as evaluating improvement, informing treatment direction, and for a better general understanding of the client.

In this video, James P. Choca provides a brief overview of the Rorschach and demonstrates administration of the instrument. In an interview with host Kathleen Bechtold, Dr. Choca uses illustrative examples from the demonstration to discuss the art of interpreting responses and other key elements for the best use of this instrument.

CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL GROUP PLAY INTERVENTIONS

    With Linda A. Reddy, PhD

In this video, Dr. Linda A. Reddy demonstrates evidence-based approaches to implementing cognitive-behavioral group play interventions with children who are 4-10 years old. Often times, children with neurocognitive and behavioral issues such as ADHD, have trouble interacting with other children and adults.

The cognitive-behavioral approach shown here uses group play interventions to help children develop prosocial skills such as sharing, asking for and offering help. Dr. Reddy's group-play interventions include a multimodal approach that integrates cognitive-behavioral interventions and skill-intensive opportunities for learning through teaching modalities, as well as structured group therapy interventions.

In this video, Dr. Reddy demonstrates cognitive-behavioral group play interventions with four elementary-aged school children through several exercises in developmentally appropriate games.

In Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, V. Mark Durand demonstrates his positive parenting approach to working with mothers and fathers of children who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

ASD is an increasingly common diagnosis among children, and symptoms such as repetitive behaviors and communication deficiencies can challenge parents, often affecting their personal relationships and daily activities. The evidence-based approach demonstrated in this video focuses on increasing a sense of hope in these parents.

In this video, Dr. Durand works with a single-mother of an 8-year old boy with autism spectrum disorder. He helps her see that how she thinks about herself and her son impacts on her relationship with him at home. MANAGING CONFLICT IN SCHOOLS: A NEW APPROACH TO A DISCIPLINARY OFFENSE

    With John Winslade

School counselors can play a useful facilitative role in addressing offenses at school without resorting to punishment. Restorative practices are about addressing the harm done to relationships by an offense rather than framing the act as a challenge to school rules or authorities. Here Dr. Winslade facilitates a restorative conference informed by narrative ideas.

The demonstration involves two female students, former close friends, who engaged in cruel and threatening behavior through Facebook after a conflict arose over a boy. The situation brings together a community of care around an offense, including the offender, the victim, parents, teachers, school administrators, and friends, to help to set things right.

    CONSULTATION: CREATING SCHOOL BASED INTERVENTIONS

By Jon Carlson, PsyD, EdD Don Dinkmeyer, Jr., PhD

If your work involves children - either directly or indirectly - understanding how to consult with parents and teachers is a crucial clinical task. Here, watch two seasoned experts present key ideas and interventions for conducting successful school-based consultations.

Successful school-based consultation requires an understanding not only of child behavior, but also of the myriad issues children's parents and teachers bring to the table. In this rich video, Drs. Jon Carlson and Don Dinkmeyer offer insight and strategies that will not only support your growth as a consultant, but also help you make a deeper impact on youth by targeting the "managers of the system." Here, you'll learn about the underlying messages of different types of child misbehavior, get tools for helping adults recognize and soften their own reactivity, and find realistic ideas for shifting these fraught dynamics.

Seasoned experts in the field, Carlson and Dinkmeyer begin with an overview of key school-based consultation theories, such as the "useless triangle," and skills such as empathy, communication analysis, and focusing on the adult's responses to the child. Throughout the video, they highlight the complex issues that can result in power struggles, academic problems, and tantrums.

You'll also see each clinician conduct several actual consultations, including meetings with individual teachers, parent-child pairs, and a group of five mothers of children varied in age. You'll watch Carlson work with a pre-kindergarten teacher so frustrated by her 4-year-old student's antics that she's ready to send him to special education; an exacerbated mother who's resorted to "pleading" with her son to do his chores; and a resigned father whose inability to enforce his son's bedtime has led to the son's "tuning him out." You'll also witness Dinkmeyer in action, working with a teacher's aide who's at a loss with her sixth grader's lack of school preparation, as well as the aforementioned mother's group.

Collaborative and empathic while also direct and practical, Carlson and Dinkmeyer each lead their clients to positive, hopeful outcomes. If you're looking for a primer on school-based consultations or examples of work with real clients, this video will help you quickly upgrade your skill set.

By watching this video, you will:
  • Understand the theoretical foundations of school-based consultation.
  • Learn how to speak with teachers and parents in an empathic way that also supports change.
  • Discover key interventions for addressing the underlying needs of child misbehavior.
