CASTOR ET POLLUX - JEAN-PHILIPPE RAMEAU/DE NEDERLANDSE OPERA

Castor et Pollux is arguably Rameau's finest creation in the tragedie lyrique style. Its libretto, based in mythology, focuses on an unusual theme: the self-sacrifice love between Castor, who is mortal, and his immortal brother, Pollux. When Castor is killed while defending his beloved Telaire from an attempted abduction, Pollux resolves to give up this immortality and take Castor's place in the Underworld. After passionate debate over who will live and who will die, the brothers are eternally united, transformed into the constellation Gemini.

The striking luminous sets, depicting a stylized version of the constellation, give this fabulous production a glorious 21st century baroque look.

The chemistry between them is electric, unrivaled in the theatre today. Russian soprano Anna Netrebko is not only beautiful but has a marvelous voice and technique; on the other hand Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon, has a wonderful voice and an incredible charisma.

The excellent bonus features include fascinating interviews with all the key performers and the director, who confirms that he not only wanted to remain steadfastly faithful to Puccini's design but also document two of the leading singers of the modern age rather than embarking on some kind of trendy contemporary re-creation.

    THE STORY
Paris in the 1830s. Four friends share a drafty Parisian garret. Though leading a life of privation, they are buoyed by good spirits: the writer Rodolfo, the painter Marcello, the musician Schaunard and the philosopher Colline. It is Christmas Eve, and they decide to celebrate in their favorite pub, the Cafe Momus. Rodolfo stays behind to finish an article. There is a knock at the door; their neighbor Mimi, whose candle has gone out, asks for fire. Rodolfo is fascinated by her. It is love at first sight!

The new lovers catch up with Rodolfo's friends at the Cafe Momus, where Marcello‘s former mistress Musetta turns the evening into a spirited event. The light-hearted mood of Rodolfo's and Mimi's first days together does not last, however, for Mimi develops a fatal illness. Though they agree to stay together, Mimi leaves her lover. Only when she is desperately ill and dying does she return to the garret where she once was so happy ?and to Rodolfo, the man she still loves with all her heart?

LES BOREADES -JEAN-PHILIPPE RAMEAU/OPERA NATIONAL DE PARIS

    Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764)

This mythical tale of a young queen, Alphise, determined to abdicate rather than contemplate an enforced marriage to a descendant of Boreas, is nothing less than highly-charged. Her forbidden love for Abaris is reciprocated, but seems hopeless until his divine origins are revealed, where upon darkness is turned to light and Boreas's dingy domain is suffused with glowing colors, both literally and metaphorically.

It is Rameau who emerges as the real hero of Les Boreades, in bold rhythms and daring melodic lines, threatening tempest and torture scenes and uninhibited choruses.

Written in 1763, the opera was abandoned in rehearsal, for reasons still unclear. Rameau died the following year and the work disappeared from public view for more than 200 years. In this production, Director Robert Carsen and his creative team flood the stage by turns with summer blossoms, mountainous piles of autumn leaves, harsh winter snows and thunderous spring storms. The cast of 140, including soloists, chorus and dancers are attired in costumes inspired by late 1940s Dior.

In addition, included is an extra feature, The Triumph of Love, which is a 60-minute documentary including interviews with Robert Carson, William Christie, Barbara Bonney, Paul Agnew and Laurent Naouri.

LOVE OF THREE ORANGES, THE - PROKOFIEV/MAURICE SENDAK/GLYNDEBOURNE

Glyndebourne's production of The Love of Three Oranges is nothing short of a sizzling visual extravaganza. The combination of Frank Corsaro's innovative direction and the brilliant creative designs of Maurice Sendak has created an opera which mixes fantasy, nightmare, romance and satire. The whole production is alive with acrobats, jugglers, body-builders, monsters, outrageous inflatable figures, colossal puppets and special animated sequences ?creating a farcical, carnival atmosphere.

Willard White powerfully portrays the King whose son, a doleful hypochondriac, can only be cured through laughter. The antics of the court jester, Truffaldino, fail to raise even a giggle, and it is only when the wicked witch Fata Morgana accidently loses her skirt that the Prince breaks into hysterics. In revenge Morgana condemns the Prince, sung with "…fine lyrical fervour" by Ryland Davies (Musical Times), to fall in love with three oranges which he pursues for three thousand miles. The exciting rhythms and brilliant orchestration of Prokofiev's score are conducted by Bernard Haitink.

Albeniz composed this 'Wagnerian' opera to an English libretto by his patron Francis Burdett Money-Coutts between 1898 and 1902. Many believed the score was lost, until the conductor Jose de Eusebio reconstructed it from various manuscript sources and publishers' proofs. MOZART/DROTTNINGHOLM COURT THEATRE - LA FINTA GIARDINIERA

This perfect exposition starts off with three classic buffo roles ?an amorous old man, a wily maid and a handsome young gardener. The Cavaliere offers a "serious" role ala opera seria. And a female gardener who is "finta", in other words a fake, is a "mezzo carattere" ?the title given in opera buffa to roles that are allowed to alternate between the comic and the serious, between sentimentality and drama. With its clever changes between major and minor keys, this plot is anything but cliched.

REAL DON GIOVANNI, THE - DOCU-DRAMA WITH OPERA SINGER SIR THOMAS ALLEN

Shot on location in Prague, Vienna and in Northern Bohemia, this docu-drama attempts to place Don Giovanni's violent and seductive personality in its historical context.

Using dramatization, performance and documentary, the opera singer Thomas Allen argues that the key to understanding Mozart's demonic philanderer is through Giacomo Casanova. Whilst performing the role in contemporary Prague, Allen sets out to prove that the real-life eighteenth century sex maniac was not only a direct influence on Mozart's opera, but that he was involved in its creation. Before long, Allen becomes caught up in the romance of performing this role, and his obsession begins to slip into fantasy.

A collaboration of one of Britain's foremost composers, Oliver Knussen, with the vivid magical images of American artist and author, Maurice Sendak, evokes a very special form of theater ?fantasy opera.

The antics of young Max and his journey to the Land of the Wild Things, and Jennie, the Sealyham terrier's search for something more than everything, are set against beautifully intricate designs which adhere faithfully to the illustrations in the famous children's books by Maurice Sendak.

    BURNT TOAST

Directed by Larry Weinstein Eight comedic mini-operas, each depicting a different stage of a romantic relationship. BURNT TOAST is comprised of a series of eight comedic mini-operas, each depicting a different stage of a romantic relationship set in contemporary settings. With original music and libretti, each vignette is a self-contained story, but together they work as a cohesive single piece. The relationships are of all types: the passionate, the fantasized, the bored and of course, the dead relationship.

An opera program that actually appeals to a wide general audience, BURNT TOAST is the brainchild of the same team that created "Toothpaste", the five-minute domestic opera that has been screened throughout the world and showered with international prizes.

    Reviews
"The entire process of love, pain and the whole damn thing is uniquely played out in the mock-opera, Burnt Toast...TV is rarely this good...Weinstein's established visual style...is applied here...with striking effect." - The (Toronto) Globe and Mail

  • "Inspired...Composed by Alexina Louie, with a playfully ironic libretto from Dan Redican, the comedia opera features a virtual Who's Who of Canadian actors -- Paul Gross, Colm Feore, Colin Machirie, Leah Pinsent, Cathy Jones, Mark McKinney among others -- lip-synching their way through the melodie madness." - Toronto Star

    DON GIOVANNI: LEPORELLO'S REVENGE

Mozart's opera presented from the point of view of Don Giovanni's servant, Leporello.
This film takes Mozart's operatic masterpiece "Don Giovanni", and without changing a note of the music, turns the opera inside out. The story is presented by Don Giovanni's servant, Leporello, who hosts a 'film within a film' that reveals the shocking secret of his master's identity.

Dmitri Horostovsky, the great Russian baritone, sings both the roles of Leporello and Don Giovanni. Through the use of spectacular visual effects, the dark side of the opera comes to life, and Dmitri transcends time and dimension to dramatically interact with himself.

The provocative ending to Leporello's story will be a surprise to everyone.

  • "Much imagination has been applied to the making of this film, and it is musically impressive, with Hvorostovky in especially fine voice." - The Toronto Star

DIDO AND AENEAS: A DANCED OPERA

The critically-acclaimed Mark Morris dance production of the baroque operatic masterwork.

This adaptation of the critically acclaimed and provocative dance production by Mark Morris takes a fresh and controversial approach to the baroque operatic masterwork written in 1689 by Henry Purcell.

Dido, the noble Queen of Carthage, has fallen in love with the Trojan prince Aeneas. While the court celebrates the imminent union of the two monarchs, the evil Sorceress with her coven of witches plots their downfall. Romance leads to heartbreak and tragedy.

DIDO AND AENEAS stars Mark Morris himself in the dual roles of Dido and the Sorceress, and the supporting roles are performed by the incomparable Mark Morris Dance Group.

Tafelmusik provides accompaniment to a superb cast of vocal soloists including the great American mezzo Jennifer Lane.

  • "The music?is) truly excellent…modern dance programs will find this a valuable teaching tool." - Charles H. Burkhart, MC Journal
