This program examines the responsibilities of all citizens to make each community the best it can be through community involvement. Students learn the ins and outs of what a citizen is and find out what it takes to be a good one. They will also get tips on how they can get involved as good citizens at home and in their community, and they will explore one of the most valued rights of an American citizen—the right to vote!

People live, work, and have fun together in many different kinds of communities. With the help of three children, students learn about the likes and differences of neighborhoods in the city, suburbs, and rural communities. FAMILIES OF ITALY

Fourteen-year-old Veronica lives on a farm south of Naples, Italy, where her family raises sheep. Watch them make sheep's milk cheese and deliver it to customers. Visit the nearby 2600-year-old city of Paestum, accompany the family to Solerno to see the city's famous Christmas light displays, and walk through the restored town of Pompeii, which had been burned by a volcanic eruption.

Luigi, age 10, lives in Olevano sul Tusciano in a building that also houses his family's olive oil business. Learn how the oil is pressed, and watch the family make pizzas for a big family dinner. Visit Luigi's school, as well as the town's cemetery, where the family attends their relatives' graves on the Day of the Dead. Accompany the town folks on their festive pilgrimage to the seventh-century grotto of Michael the Archangel to a mountain high above the town.

FAMILIES OF GERMANY

Journey to Germany to visit 8-year-old Sophia, who lives with her family in a tiny town near Frankfurt. We see Sophia at school and at her guitar lesson, follow her to a fundraiser for a classmate, meet the chickens and calves she helps tend, attend a concert where her sister sings in a gospel choir, and walk around charming Marburg, setting for many of Grimm's fairy tales.

Ten-year-old Ole enjoys a Boy Scout cookout in a landfill-turned-park, dresses up like Dracula to "trick or treat" with friends in his neighborhood, practices with his handball team and takes care of his tortoises. We sit in on his older brother's drum lesson, follow his mother as she teaches at an animal museum, and go sight seeing with the family in downtown Berlin, where they live.

FAMILIES OF PHILIPPINES

Travel to the tropical Philippines with 13-year-old Khim and 7-year-old Shahani. Khim lives with his grandparents on Cebu, one of the country's 7000 islands. He is a freshman at a school with 10,000 students. Besides school, his day includes taking care of the family's goats, playing arcade games, gathering wood and cooking rice for dinner.

Shahani lives on Luzon with her mother, father and sister. Like Khim, Shahani's school is large...5000 students who each wear a name tag. We follow her to opening ceremonies and English class, buy groceries with her mother, check out the large mall where her father entertains at birthday parties, and watch Shahani and her sister practice in their father's dance class.

FAMILIES OF AFGHANISTAN

Zamora lives in a rural village in Afghanistan. Her family feels the effects of recent wars, caring for an uncle who was injured by a landmine. Zamora feeds the cows and chickens, cards cotton, gathers wood and helps with laundry and house cleaning. We see how Zamora makes bread and prepares for prayer, and follow her to religion class.

Madina is a twelve-year-old girl from Kabul, Afghanistan. Her father, who is an engineer, and her mother, a doctor, have rebuilt their home and reunited their family after 10 years of exile in Pakistan due to civil war and invasion. Madina goes to school, tutors a fellow student in using a computer, plays chess with her father and uncle, and has a snowball fi ght with her cousin.

FAMILIES OF KENYA

Prince, a sixth grade boy, lives in Nairobi with his parents and older siblings. Prince helps with morning chores before going to school. After school, he rides bikes with a friend and does his homework. On the weekend, Prince's family attends church and enjoys a local festival featuring tribal dances.

John, an 11-year-old boy, lives on a farm near Kangundo Town. He gets up at 5 AM, and helps tend many animals. Then it's an hour-long walk to school. We are taken on safari by John's cousin who works at the Masai Mara National Game Reserve. Watch the wondrous wildlife of Africa, including lions, elephants, zebras and hyenas

FAMILIES OF AUSTRALIA

FAMILIES OF BRAZIL

Luca lives with his mother, father and 5 year old brother, Guido, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Luca and Guido love soccer, Brazil's national sport, and when they're not playing a video game, they watch their Dad's amateur team play and practice. We visit Luca's parents at the arts organization where they work, meet Luca's grandparents, who take care of Luca and his brother after school, and visit the statue of Christ high above the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Louisa lives with her brother, grandmother, mother and father on their family farm in the rolling countryside inland from Rio, where her father grows vegetables and cattle. Louisa's mother drives the children each day to their school in the nearest city 50 miles away, where she teaches ballet. When they're home, the children entertain themselves by roller blading and bicycling, watching TV and playing video games. While Louisa's brother plays in his tree house, Louisa learns the words to a song by the Spice Girls.

FAMILIES OF CANADA

Seven-year-old Hannah lives in a province called Nova Scotia and takes two buses and a ferry to school, which is on an island. We will watch Hannah's father catch lobsters and visit her mother at the dentist office. After school Hannah plays with her pets, participates in piano lessons and helps her family prepare dinner.

Eleven-year-old John lives on the outskirts of Toronto, a major city in Canada. John gets to spend his Thanksgiving holiday with his family where they will eat a big turkey dinner and spend the day away from school and work since it is a national holiday. We will visit John at his school and where he studies many subjects including French, one of the main languages in Canada.

FAMILIES OF CHINA

Nine-year-old Qinbo and her family live in Ningbo, a port city in China. We see Qinbo's father prepare breakfast and bike to work, follow her mother to work on a motor bike, and go to school with Qinbo on a public bus. We visit the parents' work sites, sit in on lessons at school, take a peek at students' after-school activities, and watch Qinbo, her friend, and family as they do karaoke together in the evening.

Kun's mother and father grow bonsai in the mountains around their village near Ningbo. We follow Kun as he walks a half-hour to his school, watch the cook steam lunches the students have brought from home, see how Kun's father trains bonsai plants, visit the village's open market with Kun's mother and watch her prepare a meal for the family and Kun's grandparents.

FAMILIES OF COSTA RICA

Ten-year-old Estibaliz is growing up in Cabuya, which is very close to a national nature reserve and has a thriving ecotourism business. Follow Estibaliz to her school and be part of her classes. After school, she does her chores and we visit with her parents while they work. The next day, Estibaliz walks to an island during low tide and later in the evening attends an exciting soccer game followed by a fun-filled community dance.

Jose, a ten-year-old boy, lives in Escazu near the capital of San Jose with his parents and 3-year-old brother. His father imports vehicles from the United States while his mother teaches swimming lessons. We accompany Jose to school where he conducts experiments, attends his soccer practice, and end the night by eating sushi made by their housekeeper.

FAMILIES OF EGYPT

In Egypt, we visit two Muslim families. Seven year old Yasmine and her brother live near Cairo in a development surrounding a golf/tennis club, where her mother manages the tennis program. Her father works for an international oil company. Yasmine goes to an international school where classes are taught in English, and she takes French and Arabic. She loves her ballet class and tennis lessons. They buy groceries at a supermarket and go to a toy store to buy a birthday gift for a friend. On Saturdays, the family has lunch with one set of grandparents and dinner with the other, making for a great weekend together.

In Luxor, famous for its monuments and Valley of the Kings tombs, 6 year old Hesham lives with his parents, sister and week-old brother. His father supervises workers who maintain and restore one of the largest tombs in Valley of the Kings. They are staying with their grandparents while his mother recuperates from giving birth. Hesham then attends a big celebration for the one-week birthday of the baby and eats with the family. Later, Hesham and his father pray together, and have a picnic on a boat with the other children.

FAMILIES OF FRANCE

Families of France takes us to Lyon, where we visit 10 year old Emilien and his family. Emilien and his two sisters live alternate weeks between their parents, who are divorced. His father, a laboratory technician, tests washing machines, and his mother is a professional musician. Viewers see Emilien and his siblings at both their mother and father's apartments, at school, playing basketball, swimming, and accompanying their father to his Aikido lesson. Amazingly, there is still time for a fun sing-along with their cousins.

We also meet 9 year old Camille, whose family runs a vineyard and winery in Beaujolais. We see the sumptuous school meal prepared by nearby restaurant, hear students recite Moliere, visit the vineyards and a local bakery, accompany Camille to her riding lesson, witness a demonstration by doctors and teachers, and join the family celebration of Three Kings Day.

FAMILIES OF GHANA

Deborah lives with twelve extended family members in a family compound in a rural village in southern Ghana. The 8-year-old is up at 5:30 in the morning to finish washing dishes, sweeping, and carrying water before she leaves for school. After school, her brother applies a medicinal plant to a cut he got while sharpening a machete, she and her sisters make fufu, her father's favorite food, and we visit the colorful local market.

In Accra, Ghana's capital, ten-year-old Emmanuel lives with his sister, mother, father and aunt. We follow him to school and to a funeral where his mother and father sing in the choir. We see colorful coffins in shapes that are meaningful to the person who has died, such as a fish for a fisherman, a banana for a farmer, and an airplane for someone who always wanted to fly.

FAMILIES OF GUATEMALA

Mariaelena is seven years old and lives on a farm in the mountains of Guatemala with her parents, her brother and sister and her grandmother. Watch how they roast coffee, shell macadamia nuts and milk cows. Learn how the Mayans kept up the fertility of the land. See how mornings start sunny and rain comes predictably in the afternoon, and listen to the sound of her brother and father playing the marimba.

Nine-year-old Jorge lives in the city of San Marcos, Guatemala with his twin brother and his 8-year-old nephew as well as his parents. See how his dad, who is a doctor, finds a kidney stone using an ultrasound test. See how the boys' band is coming along and share in the Family Day festival at their school.

FAMILIES OF INDIA

Two families in Jamnagar, Gugarat State in northern India are profiled. We follow 8-year-old Raja as he attends school, plays cricket with his friends and chess with his mother, visits a Hindu temple and takes an evening walk with his parents.

We also see 5-year-old Bavika playing wth her many coulsins in their family compound, and we visit the family farm, where we see a water buffalo being milked, a woman making breakfast over a fire tended by her 4-year-old son, and a man using oxen to plow a field.

FAMILIES OF ISRAEL

Visit 9-year-old Inbar and her family at a kibbutz of 60 families in southern Israel. Inbar's parents helped build this new community in the second driest desert in the world. Inbar rolls down a big sand dune, feeds a calf, goes to school, makes her own breakfast and shares a Sabbath meal in the community hall. We visit her mother at work as an art therapist and see how a machine designed by Inbar's father helps keep food from spoiling.

Now, visit the ancient city of Jerusalem, where six-year-old Joad lives with his two sisters, brother, mother and father...and rabbit. Joad's mother is development director of a series of group homes for children and his father teaches and does dental research. With Joad's after school chess and karate classes and his siblings activities, theirs is a busy household. The Sabbath, which Joad and his family celebrate with his grandparents, is their one quiet day of the week.

FAMILIES OF JAPAN

"Families of Japan" documents the life of 8-year-old Ayako, who lives in Sendai, Japan. Ayako loves to climb trees, play her piano (which can be silenced so that it can only be heard through earphones), and go to calligraphy lessons. We follow Ayako and her mother as they go grocery shopping.

Ten-year-old Seichi lives on a farm near Furukawa, Japan. His family has raised rice there for 14 generations. Seichi and his sisters help feed the rabbits and chickens, watch TV, and go to their cousin's engagement party. We see the schoolteachers and children prepare for Sports Day and watch Seichi and his family enjoy the special holiday. Lots of interesting facts about the country are presented from a realistic viewpoint which brings other cultures into your classroom or home.

FAMILIES OF KOREA

Hee Jin lives in 600 year-old HaHoe village and is learning the village's ancient mask dance that's performed for visitors all summer long. Her mother and grandmother run restaurants in the village and her father and grandfather farm land on the edge of the village. Heejin and her father visit the local market and stop at a paper factory to buy gift wrapping for her grandmother's birthday. There we see how paper is hand-made.

We also follow 9-year-old Ki tae in Seoul, the capital of Korea, through a busy day in school and at his many after-school activities. Ki tae's mother practices golf before she shops in the neighborhood open market and supermarket. We watch Ki tae's aunt and his mother make a special dinner, and follow his father to the factory that he manages.

FAMILIES OF MEXICO

"Families of Mexico" documents a family from the port city of Veracruz. Hermaina's father and mother own an advertising agency, which her father manages. We see her mother teach a dance class at the city's cultural center, go food shopping, visit Hermaina's school, and follow her to her swimming lesson.

Eight-year-old Brizia lives with her parents on her grandparents' farm. We visit her school and follow her and her friend as they visit the surrounding farms owned by her aunts and uncles, who are making tamales, harvesting cactus for salad, and sorting sesame seeds.

Juan Diego is nine years old and lives in Panama City with his parents and grandparents. Join him as he goes to school, a Boy Scout meeting and a Family Day celebration at school. Visit Dad at work as a bank teller and Mom, who is an industrial engineer.

Raisa, a nine-year-old girl, lives in a village on the Pacific Ocean in Panama. See the birds, monkeys, agoutis and sloths that come by her neighborhood to eat. Learn about the famious Panama Canal and visit her school.

FAMILIES OF PUERTO RICO

Nine-year-old Jose and his family are closely watching weather reports on an approaching hurricane. We visit his mother, who supervises hurricane preparations for kidney dialysis patients at a hospital, shop for emergency supplies with his father and sister, visit a school, and learn about his father's business selling and repairing scientific scales. We also find out what happens with the hurricane!

Eight-year-old Laura lives on a farm in the mountains of Puerto Rico. Laura's mother does sustainable agriculture, growing bananas and tropical flowers. We see the damage caused to her family's farm by a hurricane a year ago. We visit Laura's father at work at a port company that ships fruits and vegetables, sit in on classes at Laura's bilingual school, and follow the family as they visit the largest radio telescope in the world.

FAMILIES OF RUSSIA

In the first segment of "Families of Russia" you'll meet Anya, age 7, who lives in the industrial city Nizhny Novgorod, built hundreds of years ago on the Volga and Oka Rivers. We learn how important education is to Anya and her brother, and what her parents do. Dad works for the local water department and must fix a broken pump. Her mother shops for groceries at a modern-looking store and an open-air market. After school, Anya practices gymnastics, and we see her working out on the parallel bars. Her workout is demanding, and she falters sometimes, but she says she must keep trying in order to improve her skills. While their city apartment is tiny by American standards, there's room for a mini jungle gym in the living room.

The next segment follows Nicolai, age 10, whose family owns a farm where everyone pitches in and nothing is purchased if it can be made at home. The village of Retkino is known for its woodworking, and we see local craftspeople making bowls on a lathe and painting them in intricate and colorful designs. Nicolai zips through the village on his little motorcycle, and joins his dad for a soothing "banya" (sauna) before bed.

FAMILIES OF SWEDEN

"Families of Sweden" introduces 5 year old Evelina, who lives with her brother and parents in Kalmar, Sweden. We visit Evelina's day care, watch her mother as she teaches her class, visit her father as he photographs cell phone cases, and go to Evelina's pony riding lessons and a birthday party.

Then we meet 10 year old Alex and his family and follow him to school and to swimming lessons. Alex and his brother play computer games, their stepmother and half-sisters follow an exercise tape, and their father makes moose shish kabobs.

FAMILIES OF THAILAND

This program takes us to Bangkok to follow 10 year old Rakkiaet and his family, who live and work on a canal. Rakkiaet goes to school by boat, his brother runs a water taxi, his mother does her shopping at the floating market, and his father sells food from his boat to families along the canal. Buddhist monks visit the family's dock each day before dawn to accept food the family has prepared for them.

We also visit 7-year-old Akeem in a community of Sea Gypsies on Thailand's southern coast. We see Akeem's mother caring for her newborn infant, follow Akeem to school, and go fishing with Akeem's father, who catches tropical fish for export.

FAMILIES OF UNITED KINGDOM

Jessica, age 9, lives with her parents, grandmother and two sisters on a large dairy farm in western England. Prince Charles once made a visit there because he owns some of the land where the cows graze. Jessica's school field trip to the beach is shown, and she and her sisters marvel at the two-week old chicks in their barn. Part of their house is 400 years old, but the family enjoys many modern conveniences.

10-year old James is the subject of the next segment. His family lives in Bath, which has an ancient heritage as an old Roman outpost. The ruins of the baths fed by hot springs still remain. But James also lives a modern life. His family is musical; his father creates scores for television programs and his grandfather is a professional bell ringer. James takes piano, clarinet and recorder lessons, and enjoys the music and activities at his church. Viewers can see the family enjoying dinner and visiting a local street fair, and we learn how religious freedom and democratic policies have attracted people to this country.

FAMILIES OF USA

Five-year-old Kyle lives in North Dakota with his parents and three brothers. They farm with his grandparents and several uncles and aunts and their families. We see how they harvest their grain, fix the harvesting machine, and take grain to the storage elevators in the nearby town of about 100 people. Kyle helps his mother bake caramel rolls, picks fresh peas and eats them in the garden while he shares some with his dog, and plays with miniature farm machines.

Kristin and her family are African Americans, living in Wilmington, Delaware. They have a wide range of interests that take us to a computer class at summer camp, basketball practice, dance classes, church services and a Christmas concert, where Kristin plays the flute. We visit her classes at school, her father at work as director of a social service agency and watch her mother teach physical education to elementary kids.

FAMILIES OF VIETNAM

In Vietnam, Anh Thu lives by the Mekong River with her family. She attends school and enjoys spending time with her friends and older brother. Her parents work on their banana and papaya plantation in the morning, then set off on their "boat store," selling groceries to customers out on the river.

In Ho Chi Minh City, nine-year-old Thanh Hong goes to school where she studies French, art and reading, and plays games with friends. After school the family enjoys bowling, then Hong does her homework. The next day Thanh Hong enjoys swimming at the community pool and the Vietnamese New Year Tet festivities, including the dragon dancing and fireworks.

MORE FAMILIES OF MEXICO

Meet Guadalupe, an eight-year-old from Veracruz who lives with her parents and sister next door to her grandparents. Her weekday consists of school where she studies history and enjoys recess and snacks sold by parents to help raise money for supplies. Students then take turns cleaning the schoolyard. After classes, she accompanies her mother to the local market, church and hacienda before heading home for supper, picture bingo and computer games.

Maurice is a 12-year old boy from Jalapa, the capital city of Veracruz, on the Gulf of Mexico. He attends private school along with his younger sister Carolina while his father works as a store auditor and his mother tends to the home. After a daily flag ceremony celebrating his country, it is off to study his favorite subject, English, and computer class. After school, Maurice takes karate, then does his homework before bed. Because he has a cough, the next day, Saturday, has Maurice off to see the doctor, then to the dentist to get his braces adjusted. On Sunday, he plays with his electric car before heading to church, where he helps collect donations. Afterwards, he enjoys a birthday party, complete with two pinatas, then home to get to bed early for school the next day.

COLOMBIA

ETHIOPIA
