Sociology
Too often our associations with ageing and being old are negative. Whilst there are many genuine problems associated with age, mature adults in Australian society are also some of the happiest and busiest people in any segment of society.
In this program we examine old age; what happens in the body and mind; its implications for every one of us now; and how we can each aim to reach a happy and healthy old age.

Surf, sun, sport and the great outdoors. Australians have a great way of life, but our lifestyle can also cause many health problems which are known as lifestyle diseases. Diets high in fat and sugar, increasing amounts of time spent watching TV, playing computer games and poor food choices contribute to health problems such as obesity, diabetes, dental decay and anaemia. These diseases affect millions of Australians and in many cases are caused by poor habits and lifestyle choices. Students will gain an understanding of these diseases and the impact they are having on the health of Australia's population.

To believers, the Moonies offer enlightenment and the spiritual unification of the world. But to critics, it's an evil form of bondage, which preys on vulnerable young people. Eileen Barker set out to discover the truth - do people choose to become Moonies or are they brainwashed - whilst exploring the wider sociological issue of the relationship between the individual and society.

Paul Willis talks about how his interest in culture and counterculture led him into exploring the working class and its reproduction from the inside. Willis discusses his ethnographic research methods, how he chose his subjects and his relationship with them. In contrast to the conventional sociological view of the time that saw the education system 'failing' the working class, Willis argues that the lads he observed were deliberately failing themselves in recognition of the inevitable manual working future that awaited them. The film concludes with a discussion of the persistence of counter school cultures in contemporary societies.

While politicians told people they had never had it so good following the construction of the welfare state, social scientists were rediscovering poverty. The most influential of these was Peter Townsend, whose study of poverty in the 1960s and 70s was one of the most detailed ever undertaken in Britain. This programme looks at this Townsend's study in more detail.

A wet weekend in Clacton: some fights broke out on the beach, huts were damaged and somebody fired a starting pistol. Hardly a riot, but that was how the media reported it. Stan Cohen illustrates the distorted media coverage of mods and rockers, the ensuing panic, and how this amplified the phenomenon.

Sue Sharpe explains how and why her work came to be focused on working class girls, her shift from quantitative to qualitative research methods and her use of content analysis. Sharpe also discusses the correspondence she found between the images of femininity portrayed in popular culture and the aspirations of the majority of girls she interviewed to leave school as soon as possible, get an office job and settle down to have children, and compares this to her follow-up study 20 years later, where she found a much more cynical attitude to marriage and family but little change in girls' educational and career aspirations.
