POWER OF 2, THE (THIRD EDITION)

The third edition of the Power of 2 preserves the fundamental concepts, the classic six classroom approaches-that still have validity after two decades of scrutiny-while at the same time updating the examples that reflect co-teaching's evolution, such as, an examination of services provided by teachers of students who are English language learners.

Updates to the third edition include in-depth understanding of how to provide specialized education services by utilizing the skills of both general education and special education (or other specialized) personnel in the general education classroom. Featured teachers discuss how they use data to specially design instruction, plus we focus attention on co-teacher's roles in the provision of specially designed instruction for students with disabilities. Featured teachers also discuss in detail how they use data to group students, design instruction, and monitor progress.

The Power of 2 will assist educators-early career teachers as well as those with many years of experience-to collaborate and share their knowledge and skills in order to ensure students maximize their potential.

AUTISM: WARMING TO ITS COLD EMBRACE

Warming to the cold embrace of an autism diagnosis is often very challenging for families.

As one parent points out in this informative half-hour program: "When we got the diagnosis, autism was like this 900-pound word that sat on my chest and sucked the air out."

Award-winning independent filmmaker Robert Parish knows that sinking feeling. When his son Jack was diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in 1996, Parish sank into a deep emotional hole. He dug his way out by pointing the lens of his video camera in Jack's suddenly disorganized direction. The footage Parish collected ultimately became the critically acclaimed film COME BACK JACK - the first nationally broadcast documentary that shattered many of the myths associated with an autism diagnosis.

AUTISM. WARMING TO ITS COLD EMBRACE features the perspectives of many of the passionate autism advocates Parish has met along his personal ASD journey, including Dr. Patricia Manning-Courtney and Jennifer Brown of The Kelly O'Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, Stephen Shore of Adelphi University, and other parents of children with autism spectrum disorders. Their points of view offer warmth, understanding, and inspiration to anyone who has a child or adult with autism in their lives.

ADHD RUSH HOUR

The issues surrounding ADHD are fiercely debated. Who decides when rambunctious behavior has become a psychiatric concern? Do the benefits of Ritalin outweigh its risks? Is ADHD even a true disorder, or just another way for pharmaceutical companies to make money? This program speaks with students diagnosed with ADHD and to nearly a dozen medical and academic experts about its identification and treatment. Pediatrics professor William B. Carey believes that ADHD is being over-diagnosed, and Dr. William Pelham describes a successful treatment plan based on behavior modification-even as young people with ADHD praise the positive results of taking their meds. Other topics include genetic factors, medication risks, teachers as diagnosticians, and the centuries-long history of medicalizing hyperactivity.

ORIGINAL MINDS

Directed by Tom Weidlinger

Inspirational film that shows a way to bring out the individual talents of five teenagers normally classified as learning disabled.

Wounded by the stigma of being in "special ed" the five teenage protagonists of ORIGINAL MINDS struggle to articulate how their brains work.

Kerrigan is a deep thinker, often seeing connections between disparate ideas and concepts, but when it comes to telling you what you've just said he hasn't a clue.

When Nee Nee writes her fingers have a hard time keeping up with her thoughts.

People often get annoyed with Nattie because she doesn't know when to stop teasing and kidding around.

Marshall spends a lot of time in the bathroom, where his parents can't bug him about homework. He says he wants to "turn over a new leaf" but he's lost nine of his last fifteen math assignments.

Members of Deandre's family tell him he is not college material. He's determined to prove them wrong.

Parents, teachers, friends, therapists, and coaches all weigh in, sometimes with conflicting views, but it's the kids who become the experts in this film, as they work intensively with the filmmaker to tell their stories and discover that they are smarter than they thought. Their narratives reveal the unique approach to learning that each must discern and claim as his or her own if they are to succeed in the world. ORIGINAL MINDS eschews the confusing thicket of labels for learning disorders and reveals universal truths about how we all acquire and process information.

RTI & DI - THE DYNAMIC DUO

By Lynn Heintzman and Helene Hanson

Response to Intervention (RTI) and Differentiated Instruction (DI) are two powerful approaches for addressing the needs of all learners. They share many common elements, perhaps the most significant of which is their student-centered focus and utilization of on-going assessments to inform decision-making and facilitate good instruction. RTI, as a multi-tiered framework, uses a problem-solving process to match the needs of students to research-based interventions. DI is a way to plan/deliver curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. It is through DI that RTI can be successfully implemented. Indeed, RTI and TI are truly the "dynamic duo!"

This DVD will help you learn how to effectively differentiate instruction in TIER 1 (core curriculum instruction) and TIER 2 (targeted instruction) stages of RTI. A range of strategies are demonstrated, such as the use of flexible grouping, support staff, continuous progress monitoring and data collection.

    TWO WORLDS - ONE PLANET

By Gail Levin, Ann Reinking, and O. Robin Sweet

The incidence of Asperger syndrome and other forms of autism in the United States appear to be increasing dramatically. This powerful, eye-opening documentary brings the issue out of the shadows, stressing that young people with these developmental disabilities can learn and grow, if their individual needs, styles, and abilities are respected. Two Worlds — One Planet takes an upbeat look at students attending Gateway Academy, a private K-12 day school specializing in youth with Asperger Syndrome, high-functioning Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. The film offers a rare opportunity to enter the world of children with Asperger’s and Autism, and to see it through their own eyes and the eyes of their families. Their parents show remarkable and sometimes painful candor in revealing autism’s impact on the entire family. These students perceive the world differently, and they learn differently as well. The school offers them an academic curriculum that is challenging and structured, and nurturing in its approach to fostering growth, responsibility and independence. Students, faculty, and families work collaboratively to help students discover and develop their individual gifts and strengths.

    BOY IN THE WORLD

By Jessica Jennings and Penny Kadmon

For many three and four-year-olds, learning how to live in the world begins in a preschool classroom. Children with developmental disabilities are no exception. This intimate documentary follows four-year-old Ronen, a young boy with Down syndrome, who attends a fully inclusive early childhood education center. Through his story we learn what it really means for a child to be included: the triumphs, the struggles, and the positive effects on everyone involved: classmates, parents, teachers, and community. Through interviews with teachers, administrators, parents and disability professionals, the film explores the inclusion process in depth, and concretely demonstrates that inclusive classrooms can benefit all children, both those with special needs and their typical peers. This is a rich, evocative exploration of how inclusion works, from the nuts and bolts of a successful inclusive classroom to the benefits and challenges of educational practices that help all children to learn — and to find their place in the world.
