LEGAL BUT DANGEROUS OTC AND RX DRUGS

Real teens talk about problems they've had using OTC drugs they thought were harmless. Others discuss how they got in trouble using drugs prescribed for someone else. Experts explore why teens will experiment with pills, which are often easier for them to get than alcohol or marijuana. In a culture where the belief persists that every problem can be solved with a pill, teens naively think that if the medication could hurt you, it wouldn't be available. Experts explain how drugs affect the body and how everyone's reaction to a drug is unique. The program also addresses the issue of substances that sold in health food stores that are unregulated, and sometimes harmful. No quality-control procedures exist for these unregulated products that have been shown to cause serious harm, and in some cases, death. The program also looks at how the Internet is fueling teens' illegal use of prescription drugs. Students will: LEARN why Over The Counter Drugs and prescription drugs can be very dangerous if used improperly, UNDERSTAND and that just because a doctor has a prescribed a drug, doesn't mean it has no potential to cause harm, especially when the person who takes it was not given the prescription. BE MADE AWARE of the potential dangers of unregulated substances bold in health food stores and on the Internet.

Follow the story of Luke, whose diary entries give students a glimpse into the real world of a young smoker. Students learn there are many consequences of an addiction to cigarettes, including its effect on health, family, and friends, and an inability to quit.

Luke and Danny spend a lot of time hanging out in front of the town convenience store smoking and talking. It seems that a lot of their old friends have moved on, doing things like sports or ballet. Luke also talks about his dad, who has a new wife and son he likes better. Suspended from school because he was caught smoking in the boys' room, Luke starts seeing the school counselor who recommends a smoking-cessation group. Luke convinces his friend Danny to come to the group with him. It becomes clear that Luke uses smoking as a way of coping with stressful situations. He is urged to make a note of what triggers those urges and pay attention to them. Members of the group suggest he use the online smoking-cessation support group as well.

Students learn from Danny and Luke how addictive tobacco is, how the best plan is never to start and where to find help quitting.

    ALCOHOL: TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES

This program explores the unexpected and potentially dangerous results of drinking. For many middle schoolers, alcohol is their introduction to drug use. What they see as harmless experimentation can cause such serious consequences as unwanted sex, damaged reputations, family problems, physical injury, and falling grades.

Lucy narrates what happened to her and a group of her friends when they decided to stay overnight in their school building and have a "little party" that included lots of alcohol. Lucy reports how in their drunken state they caused some accidental property damage; how one teen's reputation suffers when, after drinking, she and a boy went off together and fell asleep; and how Darren broke his arm doing a stunt on a dare. The group is caught when Lucy has to call for medical assistance. Looking back, she calls the event a disaster, and asks viewers to learn about the negative effects of alcohol from her and her friends' mistakes.

DRUGS, YOUR FRIENDS, AND YOU: AN UPDATE

Their powerful need for peer acceptance leaves young teens particularly vulnerable to pressure to use drugs or alcohol. This highly effective program re-emphasizes the fact that students can respect their own best interests and say no. Makes it clear that they do have choices, then teaches specific techniques for dealing assertively with pro-drug/alcohol pressures.

At a secret party after school play tryouts, Jessica, Jeff and Vanessa are each faced with a predicament: Should Jeff have a beer so he won't let his friend Rob down? Should Jessica take the drink Chris offers because she has a crush on him? Should Vanessa hide the joint Lindsay has been smoking, just so Lindsay will be her friend? The party breaks up when someone spots the school security guard, but the pressure-filled questions remain.

Jeff's sister helps him see that he has the right to act in his own best interest. Jessica's friend asks her if she's thought about the consequences of her actions. Vanessa's friend advises her to question whether Lindsay really is her friend. At rehearsal next day, the drama teacher and the guidance counselor lead a discussion about peer pressure. They then outline -- and have students demonstrate for viewers -- specific assertiveness techniques to use in situations like these.

    WHY I WON'T DO DRUGS

Designed for earliest drug education, this program helps young viewers make the connection between understanding and respecting your body and how drug use can harm it. Presents a positive, no-use message in terms students can easily relate to.

Opens as four peer hosts take viewers on a musical tour of the human body. Pointing out the wonderful things the body can do, they enjoin viewers to take good care of theirs. While some drugs (medicines) are helpful, others like alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana can harm the body and brain.
Doing drugs isn't safe, doesn't solve your problems, and is a poor way to make friends, the peer hosts say. Be smart, they advise -- be happy, healthy and drug-free. If you have questions about drugs, talk to a grown-up you trust.
