DESIGN AND TECH
TEXTILES, CLOTHING AND FASHION
ICT, CAD and CAM are rapidly changing the textile design industry. With access to one of the worldˇ¦s top fashion design houses, the program shows how technology is used at every stage of the design and production planning process. Initial design proposals are researched, generated, developed, modelled, communicated and presented using ICT and CAD. CAD/CAM is then used to plan, enhance accuracy and efficiency of production and assure aesthetic quality from grading and costing the garment for manufacture to producing the spec sheet, lay plan and final sample. The program also looks at the very latest technological development to hit the textile fashion industry - the 3D body scanner. Retailers and catalogue companies explain how the new data about body sizes enables more accurate size chart development and 3D pattern generation.

Felt is currently experiencing renewed interest, as consumers grow weary of factory-made products. This program provides an understanding of the traditional uses of felt and how designers are now using felt in contemporary work. We meet a maker of felt products, who discusses why they use felt. Wool properties are also examined and the felting process is demonstrated. We also show how the properties of felt influence - yet also limit - the design of the finished product. In addition to the beautifully filmed program, the DVD features extra footage of the artist showing and describing three of her felt creations. This program is a fascinating insight into this often overlooked fabric.

This program introduces students to fibres, fabrics and textiles. It tells the story of the development of fabrics from earliest times to cottage industry, then the move to large factories brought about in the Industrial Revolution. We see how today's technology has produced fabric types and manufacturing processes that have again revolutionised the industry. The differences between natural and synthetic fibres are looked at. The program then explores the processes used in turning both natural and synthetic fibres into yarns and then into fabrics, and looks at a range of fabric types, their different properties and their uses. Finally, the program looks at recent developments in the industry and the appearance of new fabrics on the scene.

The making of clothing today is a far cry from the sweatshops of the past.
Yet despite technological advances, there is still a stigma attached to factory work, and the common misconception is that factories are dark, dirty, smelly and often dangerous places.
Designing and Manufacturing Clothing in Australia will dispel students' preconceived ideas about factories, and show them how a modern clothing factory operates. The program looks at one company's manufacturing process from concept and design, to finished garment.
