This DVD provides an overview of the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in water utilities. Many utilities are converting their paper maps to electronic formats so the maps can be used by a GIS, a powerful computer-based information management system designed to work with data referenced by geographic coordinates. It is estimated that approximately 80 percent of all asset information can be geographically referenced. A GIS allows utility operators and managers to determine where their assets are located¡Xfor example, the location of valves, water mains, hydrants and meters. A GIS also lets users update, analyze, and display information about those assets. As a result, a GIS can reveal important information that leads to better decision making.

This DVD presents an overview of the four basic types of concrete pressure pipe, including prestressed concrete cylinder pipe, reinforced concrete steel cylinder pipe, reinforced concrete non-cylinder pipe, and bar-wrapped cylinder pipe. A concrete coating and lining is combined with steel reinforcement to utilize the best properties of both materials. The concrete and mortar provide natural corrosion protection to the steel, and its high compressive strength provides the rigidity to carry significant external loads when proper bedding and backfill are used.

Before DIP, cast-iron pipe was used in Europe for centuries and later in the US and Canada. Ductile iron, introduced in the 1950s, is recognized as one of the most significant developments in the pressure pipe industry. DIP has all of the good qualities of gray cast-iron pipe, plus additional strength and "ductility," which is the ability to deform without cracking. Ductile-iron piping systems have great versatility when combined with the diversity of fittings, valves, hydrants, encasements, linings, gaskets, and specials, with more than 15,000 variations of fitting patterns available.

This DVD covers the development of polyethylene (PE) pipe since it was commercialized in 1933 and used as a substitute for rubber in insulation during World War II. PE is a thermoplastic polymer that can be softened by heat and pressure and formed into useful shapes. The interest in PE has grown because of its corrosion and leakage resistance, low installation cost, and rehabilition, and where open-cut installation is prohibitive or disruptive. PE's flexibility and resilience also makes it popular for use in earthquake zones or areas where soils can shift.

In the last 30 years, the pipe marketplace has seen tremendous growth in the use of plastic materials. This DVD covers the primary characteristics that have made PVC popular in distribution systems, including cost and corrosion resistance. PVC pipe is not damaged by aggressive waters or corrosive soils, so no lining, coating, cathodic protection, or plastic encasement is required. This pipe generates no internal tuberculation and minimal interior pipe wall residue.

Steel is acknowledged as one of the most important and utilized building materials of modern industry. This DVD covers the history of steel piping for water lines in the US dating back to the 1850s. Steel has great strength, resists water hammer and surge, and has the ability to yield or deflect under a load while resisting it, making steel piping suitable for placement under streets and highways. Steel often performs under difficult conditions, such as stresses that come from uneven bedding, misalignment, and changes in temperature.

Source water protection is the critical first step in the multi-barrier approach to safe drinking water. The quality of source water is subject to threats from both nature and human activities. Source protection is important to all water suppliers. Case Studies in Source Water Protection reviews several difficult source water challenges affecting water utilities in Colorado, Washington, Texas, and Pennsylvania from both natural and human-caused contamination of water sources, and examines the actions each utility is taking to clean up and protect its water sources.

Water treatment filter systems need to be "optimized" to keep them operating efficiently at all times. Filter optimization is the practice of operating filters to achieve a consistent and high level of particle removal, regardless of changes in raw water turbidity.
This video gives treatment operators an overview of filter optimization. It describes what filter optimization is, how to optimize filters for best performance, and why optimization is important in producing consistent water quality.
The video illustrates how to minimize turbidity spikes at filter startup, which is important to shorten the time needed after startup to produce low turbidity water. The video also explains the roles in optimization of filter backwashing, particle counters, turbidimeters, monitoring head loss and flow rates, and filter bed maintenance.

Water suppliers have noted a rise in the salinity of certain source waters across North America. Conventional water treatment cannot remove high concentrations of salt. Advanced desalination techniques, expensive equipment, specially trained operators, and higher costs are required. This DVD program explains all the issues of source water salinity: how water becomes saline, point and nonpoint sources of saline contamination, salt water intrusion into groundwater, health and environmental problems, water and wastewater treatment issues, EPA and state regulations, and case studies. This DVD is gives an excellent overview of the subject for water supply professionals, water boards, water resource managers, and environmental protection groups.

Most reports of biogenic water quality problems in surface waters, such as taste and odor, involve algae, a large and diverse group of organisms. Some algae can produce toxins, as well. The identification of algae is important for correctly determining the source of problems and targeting solutions, but algal identification can be difficult. This CD-ROM provides methods for collection, quantification and identification of algae. It includes color photographs and descriptions of the most common genera of algae found in water supplies.

The Rothberg, Tamburini & Winsor Water Softening Calculation Model, Version 2000 (RTW 2000) is a designed to help users estimate the types of hardness, the doses required for softening, the water characteristics before and after recarbonation, and the amount of sludge resulting from the softening process. The model calculates the types of hardness, the doses required for softening, the water characteristics before and after recarbonation, and the amount of sludge produced. The model may be applied to a broad range of initial water characteristics and desired final water characteristics.
System requirements
IBM-compatible personal computer with Windows 95 or later compatible operating system. Microsoft Excel, Microsoft 97 and/or Microsoft 2000 or Quattro Pro 9. Graphics-compatible color monitor. A graphics-capable printer is recommended, but not required to run the model.

The RTW Blending Application Package (BAP) allows users to determine the characteristics of blended water from two separate sources, while accounting for the equilibrium of the carbonate buffering system. The initial characteristics (temperature, TDS, alkalinity, pH, and calcium concentration) for each source to be blended and the relative proportions of each are entered into the BAP. If either of the streams requires water treatment prior to blending, that effect may be simulated by first using the RTW Model. The predicted water characteristics can then be used as input to the BAP. This package can be used at any pH and for modeling the following blending situations:
Reverse osmosis treated water with a bypass
Split treatment processes
Raw water sources blended prior to treatment
Water sources blended after treatment
To order, you must be a registered owner of the RTW Model Version 4.0.
