ANIMAL ADAPTATION

ANIMAL LIFE FOR CHILDREN: ALL ABOUT ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS

Animals change to better adapt to their environment. Over long periods of time, nature helps them adapt by changing their body shape and color, as well as adjusting their methods of getting and eating food, defending themselves and caring for their young. Young students learn what changes different animals go through to adapt to their surroundings in order to survive. A fun, hands-on experiment is included.

    ANIMAL LIFE IN ACTION: EVOLUTION

The story of evolution starts with the study of fossils that helps scientists link today's living organisms with those of the past. Students will study the changes in species over thousands of years and see how animals that best adapt to their environment are able to survive and reproduce. A fun, hands-on experiment is included. This title correlates to the National Science Education Standards for Life Science -- structure & function in living systems, reproduction & heredity, regulation & behavior, populations & ecosystems, and diversity & adaptations of organisms.

BIOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION: BONY & CARTILAGINOUS FISHES

Live-action footage introduces several species of bony flatfish, including turbot, brill, sole and plaice. These side-swimmers are shown in this program as they camouflage themselves on the ocean floor. Next, the stingray provides a transition to the characteristics of symmetrical cartilaginous fishes with gill slits. Then, the cameras move to the washed-up remains of ray and dogfish eggs, each protected by a solid capsule promoting embryo development. Research shows that species statistics include 850 varieties of cartilaginous fishes and 25,000 varieties of bony fishes, or half of all vertebrate species.

    MARCH OF THE PENGUINS

Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this live-action feature documents a year in the life of emperor penguins, capturing one flock's annual trek across the harsh Antarctic terrain to their traditional breeding grounds. Along the journey, viewers will witness how each winter, emperor penguins in their thousands abandon the security of their ocean home and journey onto the frozen ice into a region so bleak, so extreme, it supports no other wildlife at this time of the year.

In single file, the penguins march while blinded by blizzards and buffeted by gale force winds. Driven by the overpowering urge to reproduce and assure the survival of the species, they head for their traditional breeding ground where -- after a ritual courtship -- they pair off into monogamous couples and mate. The days grow shorter, the weather ever more bitter. The females remain long enough only to lay a single egg. Once this is accomplished, they begin their return journey across the ice field to the fish-filled seas, exhausted by weeks without nourishment. The male emperors are left behind to guard and hatch the eggs, which they cradle at all times on top of their feet. Subjected to subzero temperatures and the trials of the polar winter, they face great dangers. After two long months, during which the males eat nothing, the eggs begin to hatch. Once they have emerged into their new world, the chicks cannot survive for long on their fathers' limited food reserves. If their mothers are late returning from the ocean with food, the newly hatched young will die.

Once the families are reunited, the roles reverse. The mothers remain with their new young while their mates head for the sea, exhausted and starved, for food. While the adults fish, the chicks face the ever-present threat of attack by prowling giant petrels. As the weather grows warmer and the ice floes finally begin to crack and melt, the adults will repeat their arduous journey countless times, marching hundreds of miles over some of the most treacherous territory on Earth, until the chicks are ready to take their first faltering dive into the deep blue waters of the Antarctic.
