Spacewalks are done for a variety of reasons which include conducting experiments in space, testing out new equipment and conducting repairs on a spacecraft. The first person to do a space walk is the russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov which he did on March 18, 1965 and lasted 10 minutes.
