Along the way, the river passes through 5 states, 2 major deserts, and 110 miles of Mexico before emptying into the Gulf of California. Vital to its surrounding region, the Colorado River is a main water source throughout the river basin including Southern California. Today, more than 29 dams have been built on the Colorado River.
