How is Cisco using the Application and Content Networking Systems to manage
content delivery and reduce network costs? What are the benefits of content
networking for access to Web pages and streaming media, as well as for software
distribution and virus mitigation?
Access to online information, software downloads, and file transfers is
vital to the daily work of enterprise employees. But delivering this content
worldwide could require enormous amounts of WAN bandwidth. The result of this
demand would create extra costs and a negative impact on overall network performance.
Cisco is addressing the challenge of ever-expanding content with its own
content networking products.
These solutions store frequently accessed content in local offices worldwide
or deliver centrally-stored content more efficiently. The result is faster
Web-based application performance, cost reductions or cost avoidance and the
ability to better control the spread of network viruses and worms. In this
program, Content Networking, Haroon Khan manager for the Advanced Services
(AS) Data Center Team, explains the role of content networking within Cisco
Systems today.
First Khan discusses Cisco's implementation of content networking. The
he looks at the benefits Cisco has gained. Next he describes the evolution
of the content networking solution and gives an overview of global content
distribution. He concludes with a brief review of our gains in productivity,
operations, and cost savings.

What are the advantages of a storage networking solution? How does Cisco
is using storage networking to reduce its data center costs? How will storage
networking has evolved at Cisco and how it will improve in the future?
Data is an important corporate asset, but storing huge volumes of data
can be inefficient and expensive. Within Cisco IT, data center costs make
up about 50% of IT costs. And storage costs make up about 50% of data center
costs. Over the last four years storage requirements have been doubling year
over year. Controlling these storage costs have been critical to controlling
overall IT costs.
In recent years, storage area networks or SANs have emerged as the foundation
for making stored data more cost effective by improving overall storage utilization
and manageability and more accessible by providing a virtual storage pool
to support our internal clients' needs for application storage.
Cisco IT has been migrating all of our direct access storage - that is,
storage drives directly connected to application servers - to storage area
networks, which are large amounts of storage resources separate from the application
servers but connected to them across a special storage network.
In this program Robert Scarbrough, a Program Manager in Cisco IT, explains
the role of Storage Networking within Cisco Systems today.
