A local Hindu deity was Mumbai-Ai; it was from that name that the better-known name of Bombay derives. Set on 7 swampy islands, its unwilling possession was passed by the Portuguese to the Charles II of England as a dubious dowry; his government passed ownership to the East India Company.

DAMASCUS - SYRIA, ON THE ROAD TO DAMASCUS

Depending on your point of view Syria is either a rogue state run by an authoritarian regime - or a champion of the Arab cause. But what's not in dispute is that the war in neighboring Lebanon has drastically altered the balance of power in this region and radicalized opinion in Syria. One of Syria's leading Sunni clerics Sheikh Mohammed Habbash told reporter Mark Corcoran that his people are now calling for the creation of a Syrian Hezbollah-style militia to retake the Golan Heights - Syrian territory occupied by Israel since the 1967 war. "The government now may forbid any attack in Golan Heights but I can tell you honestly government and our leadership cannot stay forever in control of everyone." Sheikh Mohammed Habbash says. Everywhere in Damascus there are portraits of Hafaz and Bashar al Assad the father-son dynasty that's ruled this country with an iron fist for more than 35 years. But now their official portraits have been joined - even upstaged - by posters of a bearded Lebanese cleric: Hassan Nasrallah - leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah, self proclaimed victor of a month long war that shattered the myth of Israel's invincibility. The yellow flags of Hezbollah fly everywhere. A victory for Nasrallah, has been greeted as a victory for all Syria -which along with Iran provided him with arms, money and advisers. Now, former Presidential adviser turned regime critic Ayman Abdel Nour - fears the growing power of Islamic extremists who are attempting to exploit the mood. "I assure you something, now the biggest danger for the regime in the eyes of the top regime people, is radical Islam"

HAMAS VICTORY

HAMAS VICTORY investigates the appeal of an officially terrorist organization both in the isolated, more traditionally Islamic oriented Gaza Strip, and in the secularized West Bank. The earlier Palestinian popular support of Yassir Arafat's "Fatah" movement has declined as its corruption and scandals punctuated the failure to achieve peace and prosperity, much less totally expel the Israelis--portrayed as alien and brutal occupiers. Beginning with its (ironically) Israeli supported development by the Muslim Brotherhood imported decades ago from Egypt and climaxing in its unanticipated sweep of democratic elections, this emerging force was born of a deep and furious hatred of Israel and its Western supporters. Can the West hope that it will become more pragmatic and recognize the need to negotiate with Israel? HAMAS hints at the answers in the words of those who supported it.

HOSTAGES OF HATRED

The story of the fate of Palestinian refugees living under the auspices of UNWRA (the United Nations Relief and Work Agency). While the Arab armies were preparing to invade the newborn state of Israel in 1948 a few hundred thousand Arabs from Palestine were getting ready to flee their homes - some convinced that they would return quickly as winners and conquerors: others fled from fear of the Israelis. They filled up the refugee camps hastily constructed on their Arab brothers' land. Because most of the neighboring Arab countries refused permission for these refugees to settle permanently, the refugee heritage of those first occupants has been passed on to their children and grandchildren. The program sets out to tell the story of those men, women and children, who have been used as pawns for over 60 years, by Arab leaders at first, by Palestinian leaders later on and until this very day by UNWRA that was specially created to supposedly take care of them. Their plight is supposedly well known but in fact little is known about the fate of these refugees.

SILENT EXODUS, THE

Jews had been living in Arab lands for thousands of years. There were approximately a million Jews living in Arab countries between 1946 and 1974 who had accepted their fate in good times and bad times, enduring pogroms and persecutions for hundreds of years. Some Jews even considered their survival a miracle; many were expelled from the Arab world. But for others 1948 marked the beginning of their exodus with the birth of the state of Israel. These Jews did not get special status. They came from Aden, Yemen, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya. Though they had lost everything and sometimes even relatives, memories and cemeteries, it was in Israel and the West that they were able to rebuild their lives. They asked for no compensation, nor any right to return, nor even wished that their story be told. Theirs was a Silent Exodus.

TEAM FOR PEACE, A

At the crossroads where architecture, urbanism, economics and sociology meet, this film profiles some of the most well known skyscrapers in the world and provides commentaries and analysis from their engineers and some of the world's greatest contemporary architects such as Norman Fisher, Jean Nouvel, Christina de Partzamparc and Paul Andreu. Creating the tallest structure is the culmination of an ancient dream, from the mythical tower of Babel to the Eiffel Tower. For over two centuries, these skyscrapers have defined the cityscapes of New York, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and other great cities. Today in Asia, towers are now shattering previous height records. A building nearly a mile high is being planned in Malaysia. Far from going out of fashion, this architectural challenge has become essential in the planning of contemporary urban landscapes; especially in cities where land is extremely scarce. Towers all over the world symbolize economic growth and success. In Paris or New York, towers crowd the business districts. In Dubai and Shanghai these concrete and steel giants have radically transformed their cityscapes. Everywhere, architects rival each other in originality, and all have their special place in the field of modern architecture.
