COMMUNITY ACTION AND THE ENVIRONMENT

In 1996 residents living in Werribee, just outside Melbourne, learned that a toxic waste dump was being proposed for a nearby quarry site owned by CSR, an international manufacturer of building products. This program explores the action taken by the community in their conflict with the state government and the company. A local community group called WRATD - Werribee Residents against Toxic Dumps - became the main driving force successfully opposing the toxic waste dump.

ENERGY CONSERVATION

Renewable energy offers a long term solution to the problems caused by our use of fossil fuels, but if we want to make an immediate impact, the best place to start is energy conservation. Developed countries like Australia have relied on cheap energy to maintain high living standards, but this has produced a culture of wastefulness and inefficiency. This program takes the audience on a tour of an energy efficient house to show how the average home can cut energy use. And to make sure the audience identifies with the subject, we also visit an average Australian household and an average Australian secondary school, to see what they've done to conserve energy. Once people are educated about the way we use energy, they realise how easy it is to make the small changes that are needed to cut our energy use. This program shows that this results in big savings on our energy bills and makes a significant contribution to the health of our planet.

WATERING THE DESERT

This program explores the problems caused by irrigation in different parts of the United States. It explains how irrigation increases the salinity of the Colorado River and what has been done there. The program moves onto the California basin and the Kesterson syndrome caused by selenium. Oil wells and the problems they create are also examined. The program graphically illustrates the horrors of irrigation without drainage. The problems associated with the expansion of the American population into deserts are explained with illustrations of fissuring from too much ground water extraction. The Central Arizona project is shown to highlight what can happen if the true cost of water is ignored.

LIFE AFTER OIL: THE NEW ENERGY ALTERNATIVES

The six alternative energies that will free us from dependence on foreign oil.

The challenge for our future is to make use of alternative sources of energy to replace our dependence on fossil fuels: oil and coal. Right now, such sources are right before us. All we need to do is to scale up what already exists in the laboratory. This program shows how we can do this through technological innovation and will power.

ENERGY ALTERNATIVE, THE: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

This brilliantly conceived series investigates innovative solutions to prevent worldwide ecological disaster. Based on a five-year study, "Energy for a Sustainable World", carried out by scientists from the U.S., Sweden, Brazil, and India, it reflects a radical approach to energy conservation. It concludes that the West could reduce energy consumption by 50% by the year 2030, while still retaining present standards of living.

Changing the Way the World Works concentrates on the "end-use philosophy." Instead of asking how much energy the world will demand, it asks how can less energy be used to give consumers the things they want - lighting, central heating, air conditioning, automobiles, etc.

The Rich Get Richer focuses on tough, innovative laws and fresh initiatives world-wide which are helping to contain energy consumption and pollution. We see a computerized energy-management system in a home and in a high-efficiency office building.

Power to the People focuses on the developing world where the energy debate is carried on against a background of grinding poverty, limited resources and rapidly growing population. Among the affordable solutions demonstrated are more efficient stoves and faster growing trees.

SCIENCE SCREEN REPORT: 21ST CENTURY SCIENCE - PURSUING ENERGY ALTERNATIVES

About 300 years ago conventional science, based on Newton・s Laws of Motion, announced that energy could not be created and thus the quest for perpetual motion, and therefore .free・ energy, was over. However, there were a few dreamers and visionaries who refused to believe perpetual motion, the holy grail of science, was beyond the minds of men. Drawn together by the internet, there are still those who believe perpetual motion and .free・ energy is not only possible, but that it may well be the solution to our current energy crisis. These sometimes eccentric, usually dedicated, and always obsessive individuals make their cases with results that are both entertaining and surprising.

CONSERVATION AND ENERGY ALTERNATIVES: POWERING THE FUTURE

Destabilization in the Middle East and concerns over global warming are heating up the national dialogue on how America intends to power itself into the future. In segment one of this NewsHour program, Michael Marvin, of the Council for Sustainable Energy; Dan Reicher, of the World Resources Institute; Myron Ebell, of the Competitive Enterprise Group; and Herbert Inhaber, author of Why Energy Conservation Fails, consider the big picture. Then, segment two narrows the focus to wind power: improvements in wind farm technology, government incentives and legislation, and rising consumer demand. Drawbacks such as the unpredictability of wind are also considered.
