Alzheimer's and Dementia Care

IN OUR RIGHT MIND: ALZHEIMER'S AND OTHER DEMENTIAS' IMPACT IN COMMUNITIES OF COLOR

By Renee Chenault Fattah

This film enlightens and empowers as it takes an intimate look at the impact of Alzheimer's and dementia in communities of color, why disparities often exist in these communities, and what can be done right now to change the course of the disease. Through the powerful stories of several families (from a millennial caregiver to a family dealing with both parents diagnosed with Alzheimer's), the film takes an honest look at the personal, social, economic, and relational challenges to the caregivers and the family at large. (It also includes the story of reporter and Alzheimer's advocate, Orien Reid Nix, who was later diagnosed with Alzheimer's herself.)

The film opens up a much-needed conversation on proactive lifestyle changes, technological advances, and the need to participate in clinical trials and various research programs. It also stresses the importance of Alzheimer's education, sharing lessons learned, and relying on the cultural bonds and family ties that have long sustained communities of color.

MY FATHER'S HOUSE: A JOURNEY OF LOVE AND MEMORY

By Hannah Reimann

Hannah Reimann's self-produced film, a love letter to her father, tells the story of her father, Dr. Peter Reimann and his trauma-related dementia, her sister Kim, their devoted Korean housekeeper, Mrs. Man Cho Lee, and herself. Their life in suburban New Jersey serves as the backdrop for a universal story about dementia, death and dying, albeit within the context of their unique personal experiences caring for Dr. Reimann in the last three years of his life.

My Father's House touches us in the rather deep places we don't often venture. The film allows caregivers to see that there are others going through similar circumstances and that they are not alone. It assures us that the path of caregiving, however painful and unpredictable, is a worthy one, one that redeems and one that rewards us with the silent, unforeseen promise of comfort and peace at the time of a loved one's death. My Father's House shows us that death is not something to be feared, but to be embraced in the context of a fatal illness, empowering both the living and the one who has passed.

THERE IS A PLACE

This inspiring new film takes us to a place...a place where the healing power of music transcends Alzheimer's, loneliness, and confusion to usher in a sense of happiness and belonging. The film follows singer-songwriter Lior Tsarfaty as he visits Alzheimer's care communities and engages the residents in music, song, and dance. "Your heart is a reminder that you are not alone," he tells one group, "You are connected to other hearts, and other hearts, and other hearts, and other hearts. FLORE

Meet Flore. A painter and mother of three, diagnosed with Alzheimer's. After a series of admissions to various medical institutions, Flore's restless wandering, fits of aggression, and destructive behavior brought on an increase of medications – and a severe decline in mobility and nutritional health. They said Flore would never walk again, and recommended that she be placed in a secure locked unit. Flore proved them wrong.

Chronicled over a three-year period, this scenic and beautifully filmed DVD shows the power of love and individualized care, and also demonstrates the potential resilience of persons diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Filmed through the eyes of Flore's son (and Flore herself), the DVD gives us an intimate passenger's view of Flore's journey. It starts with her diagnosis of Alzheimer's, documents her early changes, and takes us through her multiple treatments and relocations. We are there when her son rejects the recommendation to finally relocate her to a secure unit, and decides to bring her back home to Corsica – to the life and surroundings she knew and loved.

Home again, amid the lush green countryside, gentle ocean waves, sandy beaches, and hiking trails, something happens – Flore slowly starts to "blossom". With the assistance of home caregivers and medical staff, and through trial and error, Flore is encouraged to re-engage in life and activities. She arrived in a wheelchair, but she soon gets the urge to stand, then walk, then swim! She slowly starts to eat again and connect with others and her environment. Flore's "alternative therapy" transformed her.

A loving tribute to a cherished mother and a hope-filled empowerment tool, this film inspires families and caregivers to reach toward (and succeed in) giving persons with Alzheimer's the best lift possible.
