ALZHEIMER'S - CAN WE PREVENT IT?

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, accounting for up to 70 percent of cases. After the age of 65, the chance of getting the disease doubles every five years. Given there's no cure, it's scary stuff. But mounting research suggests that Alzheimer's can be delayed - and even prevented. In this episode we explore how lifestyle choices today may affect our chances of cognitive decline in the future. From what we eat to how much we move, even how we sleep, scientists are suggesting that the power to push back the disease is largely in our hands.

FAMILY MATTERS: COMING TOGETHER FOR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

By Barbara Moscowitz, Garrett Strang & Wendy McGrane Strang

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease can afford families much needed time to develop plans for coping with the profound emotional, physical, and financial changes the disease may bring. Family Matters brings to life the challenges families face upon receiving the diagnosis that a family member is forever changed, and that they must find new ways to relate and communicate within a family redefined by the disease.

Featuring Joanne Koenig Coste, Med, author of the groundbreaking Learning to Speak Alzheimer's, and Barbara Moscowitz, MSW, LICSW, of the Geriatric Medicine Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital, this engaging program offers caregivers and family members some valuable guideposts along the frightening and humbling journey through Alzheimer's: learning about the illness and its treatments, planning for the challenges that await the family, restructuring the family system to adapt to the patient's changing needs, and learning the process of what Coste calls "habilitation," a practical and philosophical approach to understanding the language and behavior of the Alzheimer's patient.

Caregivers need to accept not only the changes in their loved one, but their own troubling and contradictory feelings as well. They will need to learn new kinds of communication, and how to listen to the emotions behind the failing words. Sometimes this will require entering the emotional world of the person with Alzheimer's, rather than always trying to pull him or her back into the "real" world. Support groups and social services can be enormously helpful but, most of all, families need to confront the challenge together. A Resource Journal is included with the program. From the Geriatric Medicine Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital.

After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:
    1. describe the role of healthcare professionals in a support group for AD and dementia.

THOUSAND TOMORROWS, A: INTIMACY, SEXUALITY AND ALZHEIMER'S

One of the major changes that Alzheimer's disease brings to a spousal relationship is how it affects intimacy and sexuality. Through candid interviews with spouse caregivers and where possible, the spouse who has Alzheimer's, this video explores issues such as:

  • changes in behavior that affect intimacy between the partners
  • changes in sexual attraction between the partners

    ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE: NATURAL FEEDING TECHNIQUES

This 14 minute program will show your caregiving staff how to manage feeding difficulties in late stage Alzheimer's residents. Through the use of the procedures outlined in this program, most late stage Alzheimer's patients can continue to be fed orally rather than with a gastrostomy tube.

  • decrease infection
  • increase patient comfort
  • improve quality of life for the patient

    PREDICTING ALZHEIMER'S

Alzheimer's Disease is the main cause of Dementia and cripples around 200,000 Australians and its only set to get worse due to our ageing population. The race is on to find a way of predicting the onset of the disease which costs the economy between $6 and $7billion a year.

Early diagnosis will not only relieve our health burden, it will allow people to make lifestyle choices which could delay the onset of the disease. Now, a new brain-imaging technique may be able to do just that - predict a diagnosis years before the disease damages the brain. Maryanne Demasi investigates.
