LANGUAGE ARTS, THE: THOMAS COMMA

By Ken Kimmelman

Do you remember what it's like not to fit in, and how uncomfortable or even sad that made you feel? That's something most of us experience, especially when we're children. Fortunately, there are two little magic words that can help any one of us who faces that situation: Thomas Comma. This expertly animated program, produced by Emmy Award Winner Ken Kimmelman (Sesame Street; Doug; The Heart Knows Better), tells the story by the author/poet Martha Baird (The Comma That Didn't Belong Anywhere) of a lonely, little comma who just didn't seem to fit in anywhere. But in the end, Thomas, determined to find his place in life, teaches us all to believe in ourselves, to face moments that challenge us, and to never accept that we won't find our place eventually. As we happily discover here, among a variety of grammatical and literary references that will delight and enlighten viewers along the way, Thomas Comma finds his place in the perfect sentence, and that's a life lesson good for all of us.

Reviews
  • "Highly Recommended. Charming animation gives this sweet and simple program a retro feel that is easy to enjoy; the narrative is compelling, clever and humorous enough to keep the story moving forward to its satisfying and somewhat surprising conclusion. It is as much a film for older viewers familiar with literature and the art of writing as it is for younger viewers who can benefit from its life-affirming lessons on confidence and perseverance." - Library Journal

  • "Highly Recommended. 'Thomas Comma' may be this generation's 'The Red Balloon.'" - National Media Review

BIOGRAPHIES, THE: LITERATURE - FERNANDO ALEGRIA: VIVA CHILE M...!

Fernando Alegria grew up in the Independencia barrio of Santiago, Chile. This barrio was filled with the dreams of immigrants from all over the world and gave birth to the lyrical voices of Pablo Neruda, Violeta Parra, Volodia Teitelboim, and gave Alegria not only his voice, but also his indomitable spirit of rebellion and sense of national identity. As an academic, visionary, writer and revolutionary, Alegria brought prestise and legitimacy to the Spanish language. Alegria's works, factual or fictional, capture the spirit of the people and places they depict. His gift of being able to articulate the feelings of a people, in a witty, reflective and lyrically beautiful manner, endeared Alegria to his countrymen and women and earned him recognition from many literary and cultural icons.

    Reviews
  • "Highly Recommended. A humanistic portrayal of one of the most influential figures from Chile and a key figure in the advancement of Latino culture in the U.S." - National Media Review

  • 'Alegria's 'Viva Chile Mierda,' the most recited poem of the Salvador Allende era, was written in the 1960s, when Alegria was a professor at UC Berkeley; it was also the time of the 'University Without Walls' movement that responded to the call of universal higher education." - Western Institute for Social Research

  • "Fernando Alegria, mentor to hundreds of literary scholars and authors, was a pioneer in Latin American literature studies; he wrote more than two dozen books, including, 'Allende: A Novel,' a biography of his longtime friend, the former president of Chile Salvador Allende. He also wrote critical works on the influence of Thomas Mann and Walt Whitman on Latin American literature." - Stanford University News Service

BIOGRAPHIES, THE: LITERATURE - HERMANN HESSE'S LONG SUMMER

The German-born writer Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946 for what is considered his masterpiece, The Glass Bead Game (Das Glasperlenspiel), which, ironically, was his last major work. Previously, he had achieved great fame with three novels, Demian in 1919, Siddhartha in 1922, and Steppenwolf in 1927. This documentary, which was filmed on-location in Montagnola, Switzerland, where he lived much of his life, focuses on the soul of the writer and includes commentary taken from the writer's autobiography and covers many personal aspects of the writer's life. Also we meet the writer's two sons, his editor, and the doctor who treated Hesse during his final years in Ticino.

    Review
  • "Highly Recommended! This moving documentary is filled with photos and video clips of Hesse's intense yet simple attempt to find meaning in his life. He indicated in his writings that his life had two pursuits: the need for solitude, and the need to communicate. To meet his need for solitude, he spent much of his life in the remote village of Montagnola, Switzerland. To meet his need to communicate, his house became a major asylum for German-born artists during the Nazi regime in Germany, as well as the many admirers of his works throughout his life. Hesse liked the simple life of gardening and pulling weeds, and stated in his letters that he found most of his inspiration during this type of work; he answered over 35,000 letters during his lifetime, part of his need to communicate with others; he also dabbled with painting and artwork, which is featured throughout the program." -EMR Online

BIOGRAPHIES, THE: LITERATURE - ROBERT BURNS: THE PLOUGHMAN POET

This is the biography of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns, who is perhaps best known for adapting Auld Lang Syne into the version that is sung on New Year's Eve around the world. Lionized as the "ploughman poet," which dates back to his humble beginnings as the son of a poor farmer, Burns, today, is revered as a cult hero for his unpretentious verse ("the best laid schemes o' mice and men"), his many romances, and his notorious belief in passion as a gift of life. Although he died a relatively young man, 37 in 1796, his extraordinary power of touching the hearts of common people though his verse continues to be celebrated on his birthday, January 25, at annual "Burns' Night" festivities.

BIOGRAPHIES, THE: LITERATURE - SHELBY FOOTE: THE MAN AND THE CIVIL WAR

Shelby Foote: Winner of the 'Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award' and 'Dos Passos Prize for Literature Award'

One of the most prolific historians on the subject of the Civil War was Shelby Dade Foote, Jr. (1916 - 2005), an American novelist whose non-fiction work is highlighted by his massive 3-volume history entitled The Civil War: A Narrative. He gained further prominence appearing on the PBS series The Civil War by filmmaker Ken Burns. In 2003, he was awarded The Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award by the Tulsa Library Trust, joining the likes of Norman Cousins, John Updike, Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, Margaret Atwood and Neil Simon. Prior to accepting this prestigious award, the author answered questions posed to him by journalists and reporters at a local press conference. Sensitively narrated by Bill Humphreys, this touching biography recalls the life of Shelby Foote by combining these memorable moments along with fascinating accounts of the Civil War. We learn of his humble beginning in Greenville, Mississippi, of his chance encounter with Nobel Prize winning author William Faulkner, of the Battle of Opequon, fought in Winchester, Virginia, of the Battle of Olustee, the largest battle fought in Florida during the Civil War. And to close, we are further moved when he reads from the epilogue of his most definitive book. Co-produced by Chip Taylor, BBTFilms and Myles Jaeschke.

BIOGRAPHIES, THE: LITERATURE - SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE: THE MAN WHO WAS SHERLOCK HOLMES

Iain Cuthbertson stars in this historical re-enactment on the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), the man who brought the world Sherlock Holmes. As we see in this excellent biography, the author, like his literary alter ego, found it hard to resist the challenge of righting a wrong or seeking justice for an underdog. Here we learn of two police cases he had re-opened, The Case of George Edalji and The Case of Oscar Slater; his work in these cases helped to establish a way to correct other miscarriages of justice. Holmes' lovers, as well as readers of Doyle's other fine works, will love to learn how the author's literary works constantly reflected events of his life. All will enjoy seeing a rare interview with the author, who also introduced steel helmets into the Army, life jackets into the Navy, and cross-country skiing to Switzerland. From viewing Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone as the Great Detective to hearing William Gillette utter the famous phrase, "It's elementary my dear Watson," the program is filled with nostalgic moments that help remind us of the dramatic impact of Doyle's creative genius that has lasted for generations.

CHRISTMAS, THE: SILENT MOUSE - THE STORY OF SILENT NIGHT

    Directed by Robin Crichton

History tells us that on Christmas Eve, 1818, in the small, picturesque Alpine village of Mariapfarr, Austria, the immortal Christmas carol, Silent Night, which was written by Josef Mohr and Franz Gruber, was sung for the very first time. But there's much more to the story than that. In this enchanting and magical tale actress Lynn Redgrave reveals a curious story, "handed down by word-of-mouse," about a small boy, Felix, whose wish to create a very special tune for Christmas Day is granted with the assistance of his friend, Nonny, a mouse. Shot on location, the program includes beautiful music, period costumes, and also features Gregor Fisher, John Cairney, Bill McCue, Jack McKenzie, Phil McCall and Richard Blane.

CREATIVE WRITING: VISUAL LITERACY - IMAGES AND MEANING

Increasingly, the messages that form our viewpoints come to us via images through a variety of print and electronic media: television, magazines, and newspapers. So, to encourage viewers to develop their analytical skills in visual literacy, this in-depth program examines photography, cartoons, graphic design, editorial decision making and critical analysis of images, while in the process informing viewers about the way media images are generated and deepening their appreciation of the necessarily selective way the world is represented through newspapers.

ENGLISH STUDIES: DAVID MALOUF - AN IMAGINARY LIFE

This is an illuminating profile of the popular novelist and poet David Malouf, known for his best-selling books, Remembering Babylon, Johnno, 12 Edmondstone Street, The Great World, The Year of the Foxes, The Gold Coast, and An Imaginary Life. It interweaves the imagined world of Malouf's writing with the reality of places and experiences that have inspired him. Delving into his Lebanese and English heritage and his memories of growing up during WW II, the program uses a combination of interviews, dramatizations, archival footage and cinema verite sequences to explore the work of this complex man. It reveals a writer who looks closely into ordinary lives and events, finding something precious in them, giving those mundane moments meaning and making them into art.

    Reviews
  • "Highly Recommended. A reflective study on the author and his work, this program gives an insight into how he integrates his life experiences, and produces some of the most stunning prose of this century. Few writers today are writing novels and not blueprints for screenplays, and Malouf is one of them. Footage of the author reading excerpts from his novels, combined with staged journeys into his past, illustrate his power as a writer and serve as a catalyst for further reading." -School Library Journal

  • "Recommended. David Malouf describes his literary influences and the ways in which his novels and poetry came into existence. In personal interviews, he discusses the formative effects that imagination, memory, experience, and the self-conscious have had on his writing, while his publisher and literary critics detail his mastery of language and his rich characterizations. ENGLISH STUDIES: GRAHAM GREENE - THE QUIET AMERICAN

As Vietnam and the US continue to restore relations, this program looks at the feature film adaptation of Graham Greene's prophetic novel, The Quiet American, a book unfortunately dismissed upon publication in the US in 1955 as "anti-American." The documentary provides insight into Greene's analysis of pre-Vietnam international politics. Greene believed the bombings of Saigon Square in 1952 were the result of early US interference, as they tried in the early fifties to find a 3rd Force to take over from the French colonialists and fight the Communists. This army came from the unusual 'Kayodai' religious sect. Offering conversations with veterans from both sides, the past is re-created, and the situation re-examined. The American role in world affairs is examined; also the film asks how far a country should go to achieve a goal that is for the good of another country.

    Reviews
  • "Recommended. This documentary makes a strong case for the prophetic qualities of Graham Greene's novel, 'The Quiet American,' which predicted an unsuccessful American involvement in the Vietnamese revolution. This is one of the rare instances that literature was able to predict history with some degree of accuracy, and this program would serve to focus the beginning of an investigation of the influences of art on life, life on art." -EMR Online

  • "Recommended. "Seizes on a remake of the movie 'The Quiet American' to re-examine Green's novel and the political situation that led to it." -Library Journal

Through five soliloquies we follow the inner life of Hamlet, using Act 1, Scene 2; Act III, Scene 1; Act II, Scene 2; Act V, Scene 1; Act V, Scene 2. We begin with Hamlet's disgust at himself and his present situation; next, we examine his longing to leave the world; then we see his realization of human mortality and his final acceptance.

    Reviews
  • "Highly Recommended. An excellent program as an actor acts out five soliloquies from the play and the narrator explains the significance of each." -NAMTC/NMM Review

  • "Highly Recommended. Richard Ouzounian's commentary relates Hamlet's inner struggles quite effectively with modern concerns, particularly in taking responsibility for one's actions, and considerations of the implications of suicide. This will be especially valuable to those teaching or studying Shakespeare, but it's also extremely appealing entertainment worth repeat viewings." -EMR Online
